The Other Side of Silence: The Lord is my shepherd and he knows I'm gay;: In his memoir "Behind the Mask: In "Behind the Mask," Pallone reveals that he is gay, and he writes about the stringent measures he took, during his 10 years in the major leagues, to hide his homosexuality. He writes that he had a brief affair with a player during that time, and that he knows several others players now in the majors who are gay.

He does not name names. But Pallone himself was outed during an investigation of a male sex ring in Even though no charges were ever filed against him, the baseball establishment, he claims, forced him out of the game simply because he was gay. Given his reputation, it's no surprise that when he talks about his experiences in baseball, his anger is apparent.

But so is his love for the game. On one shelf of a living-room cabinet, behind a sliding-glass panel, are about a dozen neatly arranged, signed baseballs, each on a little pedestal. Nearby are framed pictures, the most prominent of which is of Rose getting the hit on Sept.

Really three and a half stars, but I'll give it four for it's social relevance for its time. My Double Life in Baseball" is more than just a memoir about ex-umpire Dave Pallone's life in baseball. And some readers may be turned off by the discovery that Pallone goes into some detail about his own self-discovery in his personal life. This book was one of the ways Pallone used to come out that he was gay to the public. Myself, I was more interested in the baseball related aspects o Really three and a half stars, but I'll give it four for it's social relevance for its time.

Myself, I was more interested in the baseball related aspects of Pallone's life. Learning about the game from an umpire's point of view and how players interact with them is an aspect of baseball most people don't seek out and most sources don't cover. I also was reminded that umpires cut their teeth in the minor leagues just like the players do.

Probably most rewarding was learning about the umpires' strike and more detailed about some of the controversies Pallone had with some of the players, especially with the Pete Rose incident. My advice to the author would be to look in the mirror and stop blaming others. Jul 24, Gary Grimes rated it liked it. An OK read about a story that really didn't turn out good. He was fired because he was gay and yet this book also shows the power of the union, the power of sport, the incredible power of american baseball.
