Speak Low (Speak Easy Book 2)

Speak Low (Speak Easy #2) by Melanie Harlow
Hopefully I'll be able to revisit and add on to this review at a later time, but I just wanted to get my thoughts out there while this fantastic book and these incredible characters were still fresh in my mind. Again, I have to say how refreshing it is to break up all of the contemporary New Adult books that are out there today with something completely different.
And while it takes place during an earlier Hopefully I'll be able to revisit and add on to this review at a later time, but I just wanted to get my thoughts out there while this fantastic book and these incredible characters were still fresh in my mind. And while it takes place during an earlier time in history, it is no less exciting and relatable than anything taking place in the present time.
Both of the books in this series are fresh and enjoyable, and I will never pass up Historical Romance novels again. Because if half of them are as difficult to put down as these, I'm hooked. Speak Low stars off exactly where Speak Easy ends. And although Speak Low could be read as a stand-alone, it continues Tiny's story seamlessly and pulls you right back into her world as if you'd never left. I won't delve too deeply into the plot, because there are a few twists and turns in this one that you should experience for yourself, and of course I would hate to spoil anything!
What I will say is that the love triangle between Enzo, Tiny, and Joey continues and the sexual tension between some of these characters and the steamy scenes that follow are something else! This is no longer an issue. Throughout the book and given the actions of some of the characters, it is made abundantly clear which man is perfect for our girl and everything ends as it should, with an incredibly sweet, perfectly perfect happily ever after.
This book definitely packs a punch with swoon-worthy moments, sexy scenes, and enough action to keep you on your toes. Melanie Harlow is on her way to becoming one of my absolute favorite authors. I'm in love with her wiring style and the fact that she can make me forget that I'm even reading a book.
She makes her characters truly come alive and become such a part of you that you're so sad to see them go. I know I will miss Tiny, Joey, and Enzo and am sad to see their story end, although I couldn't have hoped for a better conclusion. I still can't believe that I had passed up Historical Romances for this long until reading Speak Easy because I've found that I love them, and if Melanie keeps writing them, I'll keep reading them!
I definitely recommend this book to just about anyone! May 21, Edith rated it really liked it. I kinda get to like Joey in this book and was totally happy how it ended. For me it's my favorite series by Melanie Harlow. Oct 30, Delilah rated it it was amazing Shelves: I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review. Tiny is more confused then ever. This twenty-year old flapper definitely knows that she wants to finally live on her own away from her family, live it up, and fulfill her dream of becoming of a nurse.
But the big question is who will she live and explore life with? Will it be with Enzo, the handsome mobster who easily fulfills her sexual cravings and can give her everything that her heart desires? Or with Joey, her dangerous, dashing childhood friend who did everything that he could to protect Tiny and her family? Two hot men promising some form of what she wants. But only one truly has her heart. Ten stars if I could. Speak Low exemplifies what a perfect NA novel is to me. It has a fabulous and very distinct plot. This novel is a rare gem.
There are a lot of great books out there, but you won't find anything as amazing as Speak Low. Harlow is a brilliant writer! But finding a book with both elements and are entwined beautifully is hard. The ones I've read prior to Ms. Harlow's books were cheesy and dramatic. Harlow is entertaining as heck! I loved the wittiness of the characters and the fun banter between them.
If you were anywhere near me while I was reading, you'd probably hear me LOLing from time to time. I'm guilty of loving the naughty parts. Speak Easy was hot, but Ms. Harlow definitely took it up a notch in Speak Low. I am definitely glad she did! I was very surprised with who Tiny ends up with. But man oh man, I loved how it all turned out. The man who she ends up with had me swooning and fanning myself throughout the last half of the book. Seriously ladies and gents, capital H-O-T! Even after finishing the book hours ago, I am still feeling the effects.
What I loved best about this novel is Tiny. She is an example of what a heroine should be. She's loving, strong, brave, and determined. Even with changes, she still stays true to herself. She made a mistake of fooling with a man who didn't care for her as much as she did with him. But she didn't let that bring her down.
Tiny stands up for herself and her feelings. When she finally knows what or who she wants, although nervous, she takes risks. I read both Speak Easy and Speak Low. So overall, it was wonderful to watch her transition from a young adult to an adult. And I especially loved watching her fall in love.
I love that moment when one of my favorite characters finally realizes who she is in love. Gives me butterflies just thinking about how Tiny wins her man back. All in all, I definitely recommend this book! I can't count how many hands I've put down this year, but hands down this is one of my favorite books this year!
Melanie Harlow, please keep them books coming! Aug 30, Zandalee rated it it was amazing Shelves: Tiny O'Mara was successful in saving her father and herself from the DiFiore family. Unfortunately, the dust hasn't quite settled for her just yet. Her father is still mixed up with the DiFiore family after coming to an agreement. Joey is in a predicament after stealing Enzo's drugs.
And oh yeah, Tiny's now very confused after a mind-blowing kiss from Joey.
At twenty-years old and after everything she's been through, Tiny's ready to build her own life away from her family. How she's going to do it? The most demanding dilemma she has is deciding if she wants to continue being Enzo's lover or explore her new-found feelings for Joey. There wasn't as much action in Speak Low as there was in book 1, Speak Easy. But wait a minute! That doesn't mean it didn't.. But I'm sure it was quite easy seeing as how much of a connection and chemistry the two characters involved have. If you thought Speak Easy was filled with hot scenes, you're in for a yummy treat in Speak Low. Enzo is not a main focus in this novel like he was in the first book. I know there are a lot of ladies who love him.
I'm not saying he wasn't hot, but I was Team Joey from the start so automatically I turn my cheek at his presence. He's just not a good person. I don't care how mysterious and sexy and powerful and…. My knight in shining armor. Oh wait, I'm supposed to be writing a review not exposing my Joey fantasies.. We experience a lot more Joey. There are moments where we're shown his vulnerability, and I loved getting to know more about him. He opens up a little more, and we also get to see his family in all their Italian glory. The chemistry between Joey and Tiny was out of this world.
In Speak Easy, we see them interact a lot and get a sense of their relationship. But in Speak Low, it's on a whole other level. Even when they argued, their banter was entertaining. Tiny continues to show her bravery and strength, and stubbornness at times throughout this novel. There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity, and Tiny does well of not getting too close to the latter. She is such a powerful little thing that she clearly stands out as one of my favorite book heroines.
This is a book I will constantly recommend to people. It's effortlessly written to capture the reader and make them forget that the book their reading isn't real life. I've always shied away from historical romance novels, because they sort of make me feel uncomfortable with their high-quality cheese factor. Mostly, for me they can seem overly dramatic, thus not allowing me to connect. With Speak Low, there are so many relatable aspects that connecting with the characters is so easy.
This has not influenced my opinion or review. Nov 10, Jennifer rated it it was amazing. I received this book for an honest review. The author did a phenomenal job of blending the 2 books, and continuing to keep the reader on the edge of their seat! The conclusion to this book is not what I expected in a good way! I am not stating much in this review because the book is a must read for answers!
Tiny finally has her dad free, and her heart set on Enzo DiFiore the stunning mobster , and all he has offered. But when Joey leaves her h I received this book for an honest review. But when Joey leaves her house, her mind starts working in overtime! Tiny in the conclusion to this series really finds out what she is made of. Tiny discovers what she subconsciously knew all along, and follows through with her heart!
This book is full of wonderful steamy scenes, shocking twist like The author did an amazing job with the epilogue also, and phew! Just read this book! It's a great ending to a good series! Melanie Harlow, keep up the good work with the historical romance fiction! Your details were spot on, and I can tell you did research before writing! Nov 05, Beth McCraw rated it it was amazing. I think I loved this story even better than the first! Everything about this book was just so satisfying to me.
I thought I knew who I wanted Tiny to end up with in Speak Easy, but my opinion did a total in Speak Low, and I couldn't be happier with how this turned out. All ends were tied up in a nice little bow for me in this book, but I must say, I would LOVE to see more books about the characters in this! I don't want to give away any spoilers and any teasers I give would do that, so just please take my word for it and read this!!
This picks up right were Speak Easy left off, so you really need to start with that book before you read this to know what is going on. I am so excited about this author and I love her writing style I felt like I was in the story right along with all of them! These are two book I definitely see myself re-reading again!
Aug 27, Christy Willemin rated it it was amazing Shelves: I almost don't know what else to say. I fell in love with Speak Easy and couldn't wait for Speak Low to come out. Melanie knocked it out of the park again with this one! I loved watching how the characters developed through out both books. I absolutely love Tiny and her strong determined attitude. She knows exactly what she wants for her life and is ready grab it.
The only thing she isn't sure of is the men in her life. Who will she choose? The gorgeous bad boy Enzo or the sexy boy next door, Joey. I was blown away with the smoldering scenes between Tiny and her men. This book was a great ending to this story. I wouldn't want it to end any other way! I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves NA books or Historical romances. It was a fun read that left me hooked from page one! I can't wait until Melanie Harlow releases her next book.
She has gained a fan! Nov 09, Brenna rated it really liked it Shelves: I literally picked this book immediately after I finished Speak Low, that's how much I couldn't get enough of this series and boy am I sad that it's done now. This series was so real for me and I loved every second of it! Just as good as the first one - the only reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars is because it seemed to really lack a plot. It just seemed like a book to tie up the loose ends made in book one, which could have easily been done by making the book longer but I am nooot complain I literally picked this book immediately after I finished Speak Low, that's how much I couldn't get enough of this series and boy am I sad that it's done now.
It just seemed like a book to tie up the loose ends made in book one, which could have easily been done by making the book longer but I am nooot complaining because I still loved it: Just as steamy if not more so!! In an effort not to give away any spoilers, I really did love how this book ended as it seemed fitting but I wish there was more from the guy she didn't end up with because I liked his presence in the first book and he's almost absent from this book!!
My ooonly wishes are that both these books were or so pages longer and that she had other books out because I want more: Mar 13, Amber Sanchez rated it it was amazing. It truly played out like a movie in my mind. Set in a time period that has always seemed so interesting to me, the Speak Easy series was truly a delightful read.
Never missing a beat, Melanie Harlow seriously did her homework on this series. So detailed, she really allowed the reader's mind to be there, in every single moment. By the end of Speak Low, I adored and admired Tiny. She was brave in her strength of conviction, and was a heroin in her own right.
So different because she struggled being at an "in between" time in her life - seen as a kid by many, yet on the cusp of being an adult. However, the series of events that unfold in the story thwart her into becoming her own person. And of course, Melanie Harlow does not disappoint in the "heat" department. Tiny finds herself in a bit of a love triangle. Enzo and Joey provide for many lustful moments. I can not wait for my friends to read this! Oct 29, Lisa rated it it was amazing Shelves: I loved this book way more than the 2nd book.
I loved reading a story based on Detroit in the s. I live in Michigan and it was neat to picture Detroit then vs. I loved how this book took off right where the 1st one left off. I was not thrilled w Tinys decisions in the 1st book and I was worried when she continued on the same path in the 2nd book. I was so happy when she wised up and saw that Enzo was a pig and she had better options right in front of her. She became a stronger, I loved this book way more than the 2nd book.

See a Problem?
I don't know why, but I just couldn't sink into the sequel the way I sunk into Speak Easy. I finally finished it up today and it was okay Maybe I wasn't in the right mood I might be back to edit this later Apr 22, Luna Sol rated it it was amazing. I loved the second installment. This was certainly a different type of read for me but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
And Tiny has become one of my all time favorite heroines. May 30, Lauren rated it liked it. Dec 21, Ally rated it it was amazing. I loved the setting the 20's! I loved the plot; gangsters, bootlegging, extortion.. I mean, the works. Tiny with her spunk and wit, I especially loved the steamy scenes and some Enzo. Imagine how excited I was to start Speak Low , after receiving my review copy. But honestly, it wasn't exactly what I was expecting out of the sequel and I didn't love it as much as it's predecessor. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it..
There was just a lot I missed that was apart of Speak Easy that was missing. We start off literally where Speak Easy left us; after that steamy kiss between Tiny and Joey. After everything that Tiny went through to save her father, he now has to work closely with the men that kidnapped him. Tiny is battling her feelings for Joey, lust for Enzo and her desire to move out of her dad's house and start her own life. Thrown into the middle, again, she must finally chose a side.
Since Speak Easy was so chock full of deception and action, I was very disappointed in the fact that there is hardly ANY. Which is great, because Tiny really needed to get her shit together. The stakes weren't as high here, in my opinion. I don't usually go with the whole "team [insert name here]" theme. Sure, I chose a guy, but I don't parade around screaming it and making up names on their behalf. I liked both guys before.

Why I went with who I did, is anyone's guess. I only got the vibe a few times that there was anything there and Enzo was always in the background oozing sex anyway. I knew Enzo wasn't the ideal guy, but he was honest and upfront with Tiny about what he wanted from her. Joey was never clear about what he wanted, confusing Tiny and me from the start. So when things started to change and Tiny started to realize what she really wanted, was when I started to see things in a different light and switched sides.
Enzo WAS the right guy for her initially. But, like I said, she changed. So with her change, Joey is better for her. So now of course, Enzo looks more like a creep and snake. I really enjoyed the writing. Melanie does an amazing job with the setting and spot on descriptions of the speakeasy and the way that life was for Tiny. She is really job at writing some sexual tension and sexy scenes too! She wraps up everything very nicely and I appreciated that.

I felt the ending was too convenient. I didn't believe Enzo's reaction would be so I expected some epic fit, some fighting or some series retaliation. Him just pouting and turning away isn't what I envisioned his character to do. Overall- Contrary to what you just read, I really enjoyed Speak Low; it just wasn't what I was expecting heading into it. I honestly think this will read better as a standalone, than a sequel in a series. I highly recommend it too! A historical romance that actually kept me wanting more. Melanie Harlow's NA take on the Roaring 20's has breathed fresh air into a genre that I stopped reading simply because every book was pretty much the same.
There is nothing wrong with historicals but the same 19th century stories over and over were feeling dull. A few flappers, some bootlegging and the dangerous mob ties of the 's brought a new perspective for me and I loved both books. Tiny O'Mara is put in a tough spot when her dad is kidnapped after refusing to cooperate with the new mob in town regarding their family bootlegging business.
Tiny is forced to try and come up with a lot of money in a short time in a situation that keeps getting more and more dangerous. The fact that she wants to jump Enzo, the mob boss' son who is responsible for her father's kidnapping doesn't make things any easier. A passionate affair between the two begins which brings even more danger to Tiny's life. Joey has known Tiny for years and is no stranger to the dangerous lifestyle she has become involved with.
After all, he lost his dad and cousin in a shooting. Despite their long term antagonism of each other, Tiny also realizes she is attracted to Joey. A big problem for her Joey and Enzo are on opposite sides of the new mob ward in Detroit. Cocktails were tasty, service was nice and quick. The place itself is super cool, worth to visit for sure!
