Irene must be at the top of her game or she'll be off the case — permanently. Irene is a professional spy for the mysterious Library, which harvests fiction from different realities. And along with her enigmatic assistant Kai, she's posted to an alternative London. Their mission — to retrieve a dangerous book. But when they arrive, it's already been stolen. London's underground factions seem prepared to fight to the very death to find her book. Adding to the jeopardy, this world is chaos-infested — the laws of nature bent to allow supernatural creatures and unpredictable magic.

Irene's new assistant is also hiding secrets of his own. Soon, she's up to her eyebrows in a heady mix of danger, clues and secret societies. Yet failure is not an option —the nature of reality itself is at stake.

Harry's fabulously wealthy mother will almost certainly break them apart, and on the horizon looms a war the like of which mankind has never seen before - a war which will claim the lives of multitudes and cripple millions more in the trenches of the Somme and Ypres.

This book will hold you, enthral you, take you to the deepest darkest pits of despair then make your heart soar. It is a vivid portrait of the lives lived in Edwardian Britain. It paints a starkly accurate picture of life and death in the trenches and the price paid afterwards by those who came home - and by those who only ever got a telegram back.

As the tale progresses it draws you in, deeper and deeper until you can't put the book down. It engages strongly and just when you think you've pinned it down it squirms free and takes you on a different journey yet again. The characters are so real you find yourself sweating and breathing with them. Everything is so real and brightly coloured, and B R Peabody knows his stuff. The detailing adds to the overall picture with stunning little cameos everywhere. This is just crying out to be made into a BBC-type costume drama - it has all the ingredients and I for one would watch it avidly if the BBC ever got past the hot bedroom events.

I can only conjecture at the spanking scenes but they seem so realistic and well thought out and - oddly you might think - sympathetic! There is real love there, with each crack of the lash strap. You don't normally imagine your older forbears getting into bed for a roll in the hay, but I would lie awake at night wondering if my grandparents ever got up to these antics! It's a dichotomy, but a very delightful one. Just when you think you have absorbed it all the book changes to the Great War, and all the things you would expect. Again B R Peabody really knows his subject, the breadth of the panorama he paints is just breathtaking.

I thought 'Birdsong' was outstanding, but the trench scenes in Genevieve place even 'Birdsong' in the shade. Quite simply put, the second part of the book is a tour-de-force, it really takes you there.

You are in the trench with them, sweating, nervous, and waiting for the enemy! The intrigue at the end is machiavellian, it grips and refuses to relinquish that grip. The end reduced me to tears, the whole book is so moving and emotional that I can't adequately describe it. So, is it good? Damned right it is. I cant believe this guy is a debut author, where has he been all these years? I hope there will be a sequel, I can't wait.

The book is a masterpiece, destined for the bestsellers list if I am any judge. Don't take my word for it, this is the best six pounds you'll ever invest and when it's a bestseller you'll be able to say you read it before it was famous. I did something with this book I almost never do - when I reached the end I started it again. Oct 14, Tabitha Ormiston-Smith rated it it was amazing. At first this book presents as a deep, broad, wide family saga in the tradition of R.

And a very nice one, too. But wait - there's more! As the book unfolds, more and more aspects become evident, each one nestling within the enfolding hills of the story of the extended Wetherby family like wrapped gifts under a Christmas tree. The first surprise is the element of erotica, with its naughty spanking scenes.
