Postcolonialism and Political Theory
Political science -- Philosophy. Summary "Postcolonialism and Political Theory explores the intersection between the political and the postcolonial through an engagement with, critique of, and challenge to some of the prevalent restrictive tenets and frameworks of Western political and social thought. It is a response to the call by postcolonial studies, as well as to the urgent need within world politics to turn toward a multiplicity - largely excluded from globally dominant discourses of community, subjectivity, power, and prosperity - constituted by otherness, radical alterity, or subordination to the newly reconsolidated West.
The book offers a diverse range of essays that reexamine and open the boundaries of political and cultural modernity's historical domain; that look at how the racialized and gendered and cultured subject visualizes the social from elsewhere; that critique postcolonial theory's claim to celebrate diversity; and that complicate the notion of postcolonial politics within settler societies that continue to practice exile of the indigenous. Is the term neoliberalism useful? In the past 20 years neoliberalism has become the favoured term for activists and academics alike seeking to describe the ideology that informs political systems across the globe.
However, the increase in topics and issues it has been Within this context this paper will examine if the term neoliberalism is useful. In order to answer this question, this dissertation is split into three chapters. The first chapter draws on a wide range of academic literature on neoliberalism and critically examines the multiple ways in which the concept has been approached.
The second chapter examines how the term is currently being used within the British media by conducting an atheoretical case study. This uses the example of the recent publishing of an IMF report on neoliberalism and analyses how different newspapers covered this event. These findings form the basis of analysis in the final chapter which engages with the criticism the concept has received before arguing that neoliberalism, if used precisely and consistently, can be used as the target of a counter-hegemonic movement which challenges mainstream politico-economic thinking.

In this course we will examine the implications of this pressing issue by considering why differentiated identities matter to such groups, where the values of their claims lie, and how the concurrent tensions can be negotiated in multicultural societies. Against the usual order, we will begin this course by conceptualizing identity and its significance through various global particularly non-Western perspectives before looking to apply their insights to existing theories of multiculturalism. In keeping with the continually emergent field of comparative political theory, our readings will be eclectic and wide-ranging.
Accompanying themes on this journey will include the role of emotions, the body as a locus of identity and knowledge, and visceral reactions to foreignness and alterity. Collectively, these views should converge to further inform our understanding of gender, racialization, indigeneity and intersectionality. By the end of the course, we will try to unravel the complexity of maintaining social differences while working toward the possibility of empathic understanding and acknowledgement of shared fates.
