The last of the essays in this collection addresses eugenics. This makes for uncomfortable reading now, knowing the 20th century horrors to which doctrines of eugenics gave rise genocide, forced sterilization.

He certainly suggests support for the latter: If you can see past without excusing that discussion, Ellis has some interesting and prescient things to say about the relationship between birth control and lifting people out of poverty. In particular, he offers the insight that in the most developed societies, the decline in the birthrate has been offset with a decline in the death rate, leading to an overall population growth, even as couples began reproducing later or chose to have fewer children.

He believes sexuality should be developed, not repressed, and he applies this principle equally to women and men. The rest of the essays present a poetic defense of eugenics. Apr 15, Clivemichael rated it liked it Shelves: Entertaining, somewhat dated with some perceptive analysis of the relations between heterosexuals. I'm encouraged to see some progress albeit painfully slow since he wrote this, still some room for improvement genderwise.

I appreciated his historical overview bringing us up to date to about years ago. There is room still for progress. His essays on Eugenics remain provocative and challenge today's perspectives, at least in the western world.
