The department considers that any absence over and above 3 is unexcused. Subsequent missed classes, unless officially excused by the Dean's Office, will result in point loss from the class participation grade. Regular attendance and preparation for class are required in this course.

There will be NO exceptions. All oral work you do in class will count towards class participation. When indicated on the syllabus, students will view a video on a suggested topic or topics, will take notes on the video they choose to watch so they can discuss it in class. During class students will work in small group s giving an overview of the videos they viewed and ask their group-mates questions to get them to elaborate. Students will submit the appropriate Fiche Yabla to Canvas to receive a grade.

Yabla will also be available for use in the Language Lab. Up to 5 students can use Yabla in the Lab simultaneously. You will need to ask a member of the Language Lab staff to sign you on when using Yabla in the Lab. There will be three chapter tests this semester. The lowest chapter test grade will be dropped. You are encouraged to take all the tests though, so that you will be prepared for the final. Chapter tests will be comprised of both oral and written components.

NO make-ups will be given, except in extreme cases. Students must be able to provide proof of illness or other issue and supply a letter of support from their dean. They will create an introduction to the sketch, explain why they chose it and provide any relevant historical information relative to the scene.

Presentations should be 5 - 10 minutes at the most. The use of props, visual, digital and other support is encouraged. They will help to lend context to the scene.

These sketches may be presented live or filmed on location and played in class. Students will write a journal on topics suggested by their instructor. Journals should be submitted on Canvas. Please do not use English in these assignments.

Use a dictionary many are available online to look up individual words, but fight the impulse to attempt word-for-word translation. Avoid using online translators; they are incapable of accurately translating idiomatic expressions among other things. Google Translator is NOT smarter than you!

Do you own work! It's the only way to make progress. Journals will be graded on the following basis: Feedback will pertain to effort , creativity, content , grammar , spelling , word choice and clarity. These conversations and responses will be recorded and students will receive feedback, but student work will not be graded.

Résidence permanente, c’est quoi ?

The first Language Lab session will not be graded and students will receive credit for participating. Individual portions of the second session will be graded and serve as an Oral Exam. This is NOT the date listed in the course guide. Students with two or more exams on that date may take the make-up on Monday, May 14, Extra-credit assignments must be submitted on Google Drive in your personal folder shared with your instructor.
