A Village Affair
However, once the women's clandestine affair is discovered, the villagers become standoffish towards them, Alice's husband is shaken to his core, and Alice will have to make the biggest decision of her life. I really haven't read any of Joanna Trollope's books in quite a while, but have just recently got back into reading her work again. Alice has everything she could possibly want in life: This is the story of how she 'wakes up' and finds, most unexpectedly, what she needed. Yet she finds that what she wants most leads to great difficulties and stresses.
A controversial subject, movingly explored. I first read this in and didn't like it as much as I do ten years later. Aug 09, Holly rated it really liked it. When you're in one of those places, between books, the limbo that follows a great book or even a dull book, when you need a solid novel and you find yourself surrounding by indecision and uncertaintly, pick up a Joanna Trollope book. This one is a fine example. She runs with likes of Barbara Pym and Jane Austen in her ability to portray everyday life with such subtle skill and aplomb.
Jul 21, Thorn MotherIssues rated it it was ok Shelves: If you're going to make a whole book about people who seem to cause immediate crushes from everyone who meets them, they should really have more character depth than just interesting hair. I realize this book is of its time, but I was a bit surprised by the ending, though it seemed to be one of the more realistic parts of the story. I first read this years ago and had a great urge to read it again.
I love the characters, especially the baby! It's so interesting reading a book again after so many years, and seeing which bits you remember and which bits you would swear you'd never read. Jul 16, Jennifer rated it really liked it. As always, Joanna Trollope does character development and family drama so well. Delivered in concise snippets that gradually reveal truths about families and society.
This one was interesting because it was published in and the lesbian characters deal with prejudices and limited choices which seem less insurmountable now. May 03, Frieda rated it liked it. I would put in 3 and a half stars. Interesting read about love in a small village. May 08, Helen rated it it was amazing Shelves: Loved the book, engrossing story.

The story took too long to develop; some characters seemed irrelevant. Jul 05, Nicholas rated it liked it. The story of a married woman who falls in love with another woman, this novel is, in many ways, like a lot of Trollope's work: With the exception of the lesbianism part.
A Village Affair
I think the thing I found most jarring about it was how dated it felt; either that or how much Trollope doesn't know about gay people or their history. I don't want to give away too much here, but I just found the reaction by most people in The story of a married woman who falls in love with another woman, this novel is, in many ways, like a lot of Trollope's work: I don't want to give away too much here, but I just found the reaction by most people in this story to be kind of shocking.
I get that there is going to be little support for Alice who has the affair , but almost no one was able to be supportive of Clodagh, who just happens to be a lesbian. The book was published in and I think is meant to be set then. I also found Richard's reaction to Alice's affair totally bizarre, and it kind of seemed like Trollope was endorsing his view of her desire for a woman, which was kind of insane. I really like Trollope a lot, and I found this novel as readable as all the rest, so I'll certainly be back for more, but I can't say this was one of her more successful.
Dec 30, Rachel Brand rated it it was ok Recommended to Rachel by: When I read the synopsis for this book I thought "Well, it sounds like she's going to become a lesbian, but if it sounds like that from the blurb, surely it'll turn out to be something different, right? It was exactly what I thought it was going to be. And despite the clues in the blurb, there weren't any clues in the story. It was just WHAM, hey, maybe the solution to my problems is having an affair with a woman?
It was clear to me that the actual problem in the main character When I read the synopsis for this book I thought "Well, it sounds like she's going to become a lesbian, but if it sounds like that from the blurb, surely it'll turn out to be something different, right? It was clear to me that the actual problem in the main character's life was that she'd married someone who she wasn't in love with. She even admitted that.
So her relationship with Clo just seemed really unrealistic, and there wasn't a lead up to it at all. Both of them were quite selfish, too. It was really hard to enjoy reading this book when two of the main characters were so unlikeable, and most of the rest were just Nothing much in this book interested me. The characters were all unappealing and I thought that the plot was pretty unconvincing. Plus, Joanna Trollope writes in a very depressing way. My grandad still maintains that he loves her work, but my mum backed me up and agreed that she found her books depressing too.
So I'm glad I'm not the only one. Overall, this book was readable, but I don't think I'll be reading another one of hers. May 07, Septisme rated it it was ok Shelves: This was my first book by Joanna Trollope and I was completely unaware of her writing, nevertheless I loved the blurb and so wanted this to be a story that I wanted to read and like. Boy was I disappointed. Alice is married with three children and decides to move into a house mansion in a village. The Grey House was supposed to be a culmination of all her heart desires.
But why is this Alice does not know. She moves to the village and here is where the novel goes to hell. A reader is bombarded This was my first book by Joanna Trollope and I was completely unaware of her writing, nevertheless I loved the blurb and so wanted this to be a story that I wanted to read and like. A reader is bombarded with so many characters that it is hard to keep track of them. Important characters are sidelined instead we are bombarded with the most inane conversations which add nothing to the story.
As a reader I am unable to invest any emotions with any one of these people.

She is unhappy and not in love with her husband, does that mean she is a lesbian? Clodagh felt like a stomping immature woman. And their love story?
