This gave an excellent picture of the hardship that soldiers faced during the American Civil War. The pictures featured helped give a visual account coupled by easy-to-read, engaging narration. Harsh cruelty is not romanticized in this book but facts are given as it truly was. In short, this is a sobering read and readers need to be prepared for the hard facts to be given clearly. This was a very informative and interesting account of the lives of both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.

There were plenty of pictures and illustrations to pique the reader's interest. I would recommend this for middle school and above. Unlike most novels from that era, it was a very fast read. It had all the necessary components of a tragic war story- a family torn by war, an impossible love story, and death.
Unlike other civil war novels, this one was very light on war details and heavy on story development. The character evolution was outstanding. From Hunter to Andrea, to minor characters like JJ and Carter, the author does a great job in developing the characters along with a complicated plot twist. For some reason I knew from the first moment that Andrea, aka Sinclair, met Hunter that she would end up having mixed feelings towards him.
The Blue and the Gray
The fact that Daniel and Hunter were brothers caught me off guard. This complicated fact gave the story an intricate flare that I think the author could have banked on more. It almost seems as if the author did not choose to take on the 'guilty' approach to this love story. I would have liked to have seen more of Dan and Andrea as their limited interaction did not help to understand the strong bond Andrea has for him. But I also see how the story would have perhaps dragged on needlessly.
My favorite aspect of the novel is that a heroine comes clean about being a woman and from the other side- to save the day!
I'm don't read many novels, but when I do they are always based on a real life story, and often encompass the civil war, my favorite era to read about. Shades of Grey was a book that filled all those requirements. I enjoyed it from the first page and it kept my interest to the last page. I am only disappointed in that there doesn't seem to be a sequel. Andrea, the main character was like a lot of women who live during the civil war, she went above and beyond what you'd expect of the average woman.
With Andrea her loyalties started our firmly with the blue, not only firmly blue but an intense dislike for the grey.
Behind the Blue and Gray: The Soldier's Life in the Civil War
We don't get a peak into the reason for her loyalties until we are well into the book. We follow her exploits serving as a scout for the blue and passing for a young boy known as Sinclair. We do discover that her brother-in-law knows who she is and not only keeps her secret, but sends her on missions. She's an accomplished horse woman and as a young scout she has developed a reputation with a band of Confederate raiders lead by the handsome Major Hunter. His achievements are well known and he serves to harass the northern armies and steal what he can in the way of food, medicines and supplies in general.

The mysterious scout known as Sinclair is well know to the handsome Major Hunter and he lives to catch that young man and make him pay for his successes. Well, as stories tend to go, things don't go that way and eventually the hunter and the prey fall into each others hands and the truth becomes known.
The elusive scout is actually an attractive young women and the two have a tempestuous relationship. I am not going to tell you more and ruin the book, but as far as love stories go this one has some interesting sides to it. I enjoyed the book and wish there was a sequel. Get to Know Us.
