Monument to Murder (DCI Kate Daniels Book 4)
Find out how the two storylines dovetail…. Hannah is brilliant at describing the inter-relations between police personnel and other authorities and she does so with a humanity that is sometimes lacking from other writers. Her writing is rooted in the north and as such has a warmth and attractiveness that draws you into her world.
This makes the murder scenes all the more shocking as they should be and adds to the experience of reading her work. I do hope they are an item again before too long. They are made for each other. A bit like Mari Hannah and crime writing really. May 05, Amy Riddell rated it it was ok. This is a frustrating read for me as a born and bred Northumbrian. Don't try to write a regional narrative if you have no idea how the locals actually speak. This might be a problem with Hannah's dialogue writing more than ignorance though - while the case is engaging until the end, which is completely empty and unsatisfying the dialogue is contrived, cliche, and just It's like Hannah threw lines from 80's cop sitcoms into a hat and pulled them out at random when the ch This is a frustrating read for me as a born and bred Northumbrian.
It's like Hannah threw lines from 80's cop sitcoms into a hat and pulled them out at random when the characters were speaking. The characters were also inconsistent and bland. I couldn't tell the difference between Kate, Jo and Emily for a while. There's no depth to any of them - not even the antagonists. Crime narratives don't work if you feel neutral about the characters. You have to want the protagonist to use their knowledge and wit to catch the killer, and you want the killer to be disgusting so it feels satisfying when they're caught. There's none of that present here. Mari Hannah weaves a mean handful of stories into one another here: Two skeletons are dug up on a beautiful beach, and in the local prison a psycho is ready for release - and unhealthily obsessed with the in-house shrink - Also DCI Daniels' private life might get a reboot, if only she can find the time for it It's a chilling story of who to distrust, when there are so many possibilities Dec 14, Martin rated it it was ok.
My least enjoyable in the series The story could have been told in far less pages, reminded me of school days when one 'padded' out an essay just to reach the required number of words. Jul 08, Elizabeth Findlay rated it really liked it. Oct 14, Pat rated it liked it.
Monument to Murder (DCI Kate Daniels, #4) by Mari Hannah
I do enjoy Mari Hannah's books. Not elevating reading by any means but very entertaining.
I shall continue to read the whole of this series. Aug 24, Maureen rated it really liked it. Jul 19, Myshelle rated it it was amazing. Nov 22, Raven rated it it was amazing. As the weather closes in and the initially baffling investigation causes personal and professional issues for Kate and her team, Hannah keeps the reader in suspense consistently throughout. Add into the mix a connecting story of a female psychologist, Emily McCann, recently widowed, and finding herself receiving the unwelcome attentions of a twisted sex offender at the prison where she works, the two plotlines connect and flow in perfect synergy, which again adds to the overall enjoyment of the book.
First and foremost her characterisation of her main protagonist Daniels strikes a chord with the reader as she balances the demands of her job, the leadership of the team of police officers she oversees, and her unerring professionalism and empathy to those who find themselves the victims of crime.

Admittedly, her personal life is still a little complicated in the wake of the break-up of her relationship, and the vestiges of attraction that ensure that sparks that still fly between herself and Jo, which adds to the emotional and almost personal feel of the book. Likewise, I liked the characterisation of Emily McCann, and thought that Hannah captured perfectly the feelings of despair after a personal bereavement and her journey back to life. The discovery of the bodies on this barren stretch of beach in the shadow of Bamburgh Castle and in sight of Holy Island, is a gem of a location for a crime scene, fuelling the very sinister feel of the whole investigation, and adding to the overall enjoyment of this thoroughly enthralling book.
A book not to be missed. Sep 21, Robin rated it it was ok. Author Mari Hannah brings her experience as a former Probation Officer as well as her writing ability to her procedurals, of which Monument to Murder is her fourth. In addition, her partner is an ex-murder detective.
So, as you would expect, this crime story is good on the detail of murder investigations. Skeletal remains are discovered beneath the fortified walls of a castle on Northumbe Author Mari Hannah brings her experience as a former Probation Officer as well as her writing ability to her procedurals, of which Monument to Murder is her fourth. DCI Kate Daniels, a no-nonsense investigator and authoritative boss if ever there was one, calls on a forensic anthropologist to help identify the remains. Soon, the bones of a second body are discovered. It turns out these belong to two girls buried five years apart.
This narrative does a duet with a second about newly widowed prison psychologist Emily McCann, who, when not dealing with her difficult teenage daughter, Rachel, finds that she figures large in the perverted fantasies of sex offender Walter Fearon, who is in her care.

With only days to go before Fearon is released from prison, Emily finds her life spiralling into crisis. This is a bit of a disappointment because, having kept the reader dangling right until the very end, the perpetrator is dealt with in a rush. Other crunch moments in the mystery take place offstage — an abducted person escaping from captivity, even the final confrontation.
Instead of the tension these events and fuller insights into the crime could have added to the story, it is stretched with dead ends and red herrings. This is a moment that may make some readers smile, because these two character do argue almost non-stop.

Emily, for instance, is basically a mum hysterically on edge throughout the entire story. This may be realistic, but she makes a rather flat character to read. Having said that, Kate Daniels is the best character in the book, holding her team together despite the strain of the investigation and her frustrated love life, administering bollockings to officers who fall short and displaying intuition in dealing with suspects and victims alike.
While the story is contrived in places — both Emily and her daughter are targeted by different predators, for example — it does feel authentic in its depiction of detectives desperately tracking down a very careful killer. Mild Violent Content Rating: Moderate Finding the remains of a child is always hard on investigators and finding the remains of two young girls is no different on DCI Kate Daniels. Dealing with her personal troubles on the side, including a strained relationship with her father and a missing her girlfriend, only adds to the problems that this case, which does not lend to an easy solution, poses for Kate Daniel and her 4.

But Kate is not the only actor in the story dealing with personal issues.
Emily, the psychologist, just returned to work and is wondering whether she should stay home longer to deal with her daughter, who is sometimes feeling like an alien, as well as her own recovery from losing her husband only recently.

Is the murderer among the former inmates or does one of the current inmates hold the clues that lead the solving of multiples homicides? The newest installment in the Kate Daniels series does not disappoint. The author generates a very dark, almost diabolical environment in which the two female protagonist shows that women are not the weaker gender anymore, family issues and all.
These are hard-working women that can take on men, even if these men happen to be involved in multiple homicides. A mystery with strong hints of a psychological thriller, this book should be read with bright lights on and a sneak peek under the bed before going to sleep does not hurt either. Nov 27, Rebecca Bradley rated it it was amazing Shelves: It had been a while since I had spent any time with Kate Daniels, but it felt like slipping onto a sofa with a glass of wine and a good friend when I picked up Monument to Murder.
In fact, I'd kind of forgotten just how much I'd enjoyed Kate's company. She has a great relationship with her DS and the rest of her staff. She's firm but she's also fair. She also has a complicated love life! Which adds a more sensitive side to her and it's nice to see because she is very efficient at her job. I loved It had been a while since I had spent any time with Kate Daniels, but it felt like slipping onto a sofa with a glass of wine and a good friend when I picked up Monument to Murder. I loved the setting for Monument to Murder. The rugged coastline that is attended at a particularly cold time of year and I adore cold settings!
Mari Hannah sets it in your mind beautifully. And with an added chill factor. I liked the two strands of this novel. It, at first, seems as though there are two completely different stories being told and even though that was the case, I was thoroughly enjoying each part of them. Every time we moved from one to the other, I was being held there by great storytelling and real characters that made me want to know more, that made me want to find out what happened next for them. But, of course, you're not going to have two random stories running through a novel.
They do converge and converge brilliantly and smoothly.
Pan Macmillan's trade news has a new home
The antagonist Walter Fearon is suitably creepy, even his name is enough to give me the creeps. He's not someone you're going to want to meet in a hurry. This is where Mari's work as a probation officer has come to serve her particularly well, I imagine. You submitted the following rating and review. Meanwhile, newly widowed prison psychologist Emily McCann finds herself drawn into the fantasy of convicted sex offender, Walter Fearon.
With his release imminent, what exactly does he have in mind for Emily? As Daniels encounters dead end after dead end and the body count rises, it soon becomes apparent that someone is hiding more than one deadly secret. This is the latest Kate Daniels story and it packs a punch. There are two story-lines that converge. One features Daniels investigating the remains of children that have been found at Bamburgh beach. Her team moves down there to investigate.
We also get drawn into the plot of prison psychologist Emily and her daughter. Emily has been widowed and is struggling getting back to her work-life in the prison. She is dealing with a prisoner, who no one else seems to see as potentially dangerous.
