Fidel Castro by Nick Caistor
Going into this book with only knowledge of what mainstream media produces, this book was well written, unbiased, and provided a more in-depth look of who Fidel Castro was, and what was behind his revolution. Gain a different perspective of Castro, and a true respect for Caistor as an author willing to present the subject with out media hype.
Nov 25, Ratih rated it liked it Shelves: Apr 02, Christopher rated it really liked it Shelves: But who is Fidel Castro? Is he a true believer in communist, a liberator or an opportunistic dictator? While unable to answer those questions definitively, this book is definitely a good place to start.
It goes back to his father, who probably was a soldier in the Spanish colonial army during the revolution of , all the way to the present era, where Fidel has handed over power to his younger brother and is in his twilight years. It is a good thumbnail sketch of the man, but what is also interesting is how this short biography talks a lot about his relationships with other Cubans and revolutionaries, particularly his relationship with Che Guevara.
Vanity publishing, Cuban style
Thus, this little book avoid the trap that so many other short biographies fall into and places its subject firmly in the middle of the times he lived through and not treating him like an animal in a glass case, separated from everything and everyone. Like I said before, though, this book won't answer all of your questions about Fidel, and after the Cuban Missile Crisis hard facts about Fidel start to become a little sparser. But for those who are interested in getting to know the man a little bit more, this is a great place to start.
Feb 06, Jennyb rated it liked it. This quick biography touches on the high and low lights of that time, managing to present a fairly balanced picture of an extremely polarizing man. This book is a good place to start for someone with minimal knowledge of Cuba me , or someone who doesn't need a lot of detail but wants a basic idea of the outline of the past half century's events on our near neighbor.
