The Spacetime Pool

In this story, however, it is a mathematical abstract made into reality by a group of ancient people who, I guess, used this key to transport themselves to an alternate universe. They left behind a lot of knowledge, with little of it used by the people of Othman.

Lucky for Janelle, she has a math degree and she is able to decipher a lot of it. She wonders how Dominick and his brother can have a working knowledge of math despite the lack of a formal education behind it.

The palace artwork resembles that of math functions and contains a hall named after a mathematician. Brilliant work displayed everywhere but no one seems to know anything about it. And the Jade pool? To sum this up, this was a quick read and enjoyable one but not really all that memorable compared to her other short works A Roll of the Dice. I find a lot of the math in her books beyond my knowledge but still interesting. Anyway, this was a low B read for me.

REVIEW: 'The Spacetime Pool' by Catherine Asaro (Analog Novella) | avidbookreader (inactive)

Enjoy and be glad. I paid for my copy. This does sound like an interesting story. Thanks for this review. I have not managed to find the whole story anywhere, just the first 8 chapters. Most annoying as it was just starting to get interesting.

The Spacetime Pool

I suppose that as it was serialised the rest of the story is only available in Analog. I bought the Analog version and the novella is only 8 chapters long. Maybe one day she will complete the story because the science behind it is fascinating. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Twitter account. As usual, I will focus below on the mathematics and explain more of what I mean about it not fulfilling its promise. For those interested in remarks about other aspects of the story, I will say that I personally agree with Mark Watson's review at bestsf. My biggest disappointment with the math in the story is that it never seems to amount to anything.

There were clues in the story that something interesting and mathematical was going on. The alternate Earth seems mysteriously mathematical. I was waiting for some sort of explanation that tied it all together, but it never came.

It would have been wonderful if the story had a resolution which explained the role of the math in the story, but as it was it seemed as if it was stuck in just because the author wanted to use some concepts she knew. If I'm mistaken which could be the case if the story I read was not complete Onto some more specific mathematical details.

The following exchange takes place shortly after a mysterious man has appeared and apparently taken Janelle through a portal to another universe: That he sounded sane made none of this more plausible. From here to your mountains. A branch cut to another page. Your universe is one sheet, mine is another. A branch cut from one Riemann sheet to another? That is all I know. Having lived as the child of a diplomat for so many years had taught her a great deal about dealing with cultures other than her own, and she could tell her interactions here were on shaky ground.

What an exquisite challenge, to portray those graceful repeating patterns as a periodic function.

Their Fourier transform would be a work of art. An unsteady urge to laugh hit her, followed by the desire to sit down and put her head in her hands. Contributed by Alex Kasman I wanted to say just a bit more about branch cuts and Riemann surfaces. I'm putting it in this box so that it can be more easily ignored by those who are not interested in the technical details. You can tell it is a function because it passes "the vertical line test", which is to say that no two points on the graph have the same x -coordinate.

In terms of input and output, we think of it this way: All of that is fine and normal precalculus stuff. But, things get messier when we try to include trig functions in the discussion. The graph of the sine function of course satisfies the vertical line test.
