Sep 02, The Grim Reader rated it really liked it. It is the perfect time of year for a good Werewolf tale and that is what Glenn Rolfe has given us. The book starts off strongly with some gruesome Werewolf carnage that featured some great imagery. Brutal beasts killing without mercy-these are the monsters I want to read about. There are quite a few characters introduced early and it can be a little tricky remembering who everybody is, however some of these do not live for very long, so don't get too attached to anybody. After a great opening qu It is the perfect time of year for a good Werewolf tale and that is what Glenn Rolfe has given us.
After a great opening quarter to the book things settle down and we delve into the sheriff's past encounters with the beasts and other characters are given more identity. I would've liked a little more action around this part of the book. There is lots of talk about Werewolves but not much actual Werewolf action. After this brief sag things get going again. We discover whom the beasts hide inside and all hell breaks loose in what is a fantastic last third of the novel.
Rolfe's prose is easy to digest, his action scenes are absorbing and apart from the middle section getting a little bogged down-this is an excellent read. Rolfe is moving quickly up the horror ladder and this reader is really looking forward to where he takes us next. View all 3 comments. Aug 16, David Sharp rated it it was amazing. Glenn Rolfe "Black lips pulled taut over a series of jagged, meat-shredding teeth.
Midnight fur covered the hulking figure. The beast made its move. Much like their kindred spirits, the vampire, werewolves have gone through a saddening transformation, one that has turned them into fun, loving, romantic people and not the vicious creatures they should be. Bein Review from horrorunderground.
Being a fan of Rolfe's work, I was delighted to see him write a novel on this amazing creature. My expectations were extremely high for this one. How did it fair? This is easily one of the best werewolf stories I have ever read, be it reading a book, comic, or watching a movie. Blood and Rain manages to tell a thrilling creature feature without the need for B-movie antics. This is straight up horror. The story follows the sleepy town of Gilson Creek, Maine. This quiet little town has a deep, dark secret that will shatter the summer for everyone in it.
As Sheriff Joe Fischer investigates animal attacks, his past comes back to haunt him and the result of one night may hold the fate of every life residing in this secluded little town. Back to my main point, Rolfe returns things to their natural order.

These wolves are huge, hulking monstrosities that attack with extreme speed and brutality. This book will have you jumping out of your seat and yelling. These creatures have little time to play with their prey. They are cold, untamed killing machines that sprint through evisceration after evisceration. With an obscenely high body count, there is little room for survival.
Rolfe sets up each encounter as the pants pissing horror you would expect from gazing at such a behemoth. The pacing during the final battle is just insane. I couldn't read this book fast enough! Rolfe's writing is going to be responsible for a multitude of sprains trying to turn pages fast enough to keep up with his wrist shattering pace. Not that this is a mindless action set piece, the first two thirds of the book are spent on character development.
That is not to say that nothing happens, there is plenty going on. You will love these characters and will want to fight for their survival as well. When the timing is right and the moon is ripe, these hideous beasts will transform in a poem of gore and pain. If you are not already a fan of Rolfe then you clearly haven't been reading his work.
Blood And Rain
Blood and Rain is a monumental piece of horror fiction. It represents everything I love about werewolves, creature features, siege films, and everything else in between. It is still early in the year, but this is a clear cut candidate for my favorite book of Nov 09, Perry Lake rated it really liked it Shelves: Gilson Creek, Maine is a town with a history of lycanthropy. That identity is a bit different from the usual suspects in books of this sort. The story begins with the monster on the loose under a full moon Gilson Creek, Maine is a town with a history of lycanthropy.
The story begins with the monster on the loose under a full moon. Right from the beginning, the werewolf kills four people in one night. The next few weeks give us a respite from blood and gore, but that allows Rolfe to establish his characters and relationships. Then, as the moon comes full once more, the book charges full steam into murder and mayhem. The book zooms into one bloody scene after another and the bodies are piled high as we reach the bloody climax.
Two things keep the book from achieving five stars. They mostly have Anglo names without much distinction. At times I felt as if I should make a list or draw a chart. Secondly, the werewolf in this story is particularly fond of tearing off parts of a body, only to throw them away.

He kills lots of people, but never takes a single bite out of them. That seems to be his only motivation, except maybe hoping to get everyone in town to hunt him down and kill him. But those are the only problems I have with this story. Feb 03, Brett Talley rated it it was amazing. So when I saw that Glenn Rolfe had penned a book called Blood and Rain and when I saw that it had a giant werewolf on the cover, I knew I had to check it out. I was not disappointed. But time has not dulled the memory of some in the town, including the sheriff who may know more about the true nature of the beast than he is willing to admit.
Now the full moon is rising again, and the sleeping beast prepares to awaken. And who will join the ranks of the werewolf? And he does so by focusing his efforts on the human characters that are hunted by the monster. And so when they are in danger, we care. We have a great villain to root against, and heroes to cheer for. Many more experienced, more celebrated writers could learn from Rolfe.

Blood and Rain's werewolf is a ruthless bastard -- the way werewolves are supposed to be, dammit! Essentially, a small Maine town that was under siege by inexplicable furry forces a decade ago is once again the target of a frenzied animal. The small-town sheriff, who thought he disposed of the beast some years back, knows what the town's in for and does his best to protect it and his daughter.
I will say this -- do not get attached to any of the characters. Because if you do, you're gonna be upset when they become monster meals. Rolfe feeds the reader gore at a relentless pace. Blood and Rain is well-written and horrifying read because of the beast's brutality and mercilessness toward its victims. You'll root for the sheriff.
But will he make it out alive? And will the werewolf take off his shirt just to make the teenage girls swoon before his six-pack abs? You'll have to pick up a copy to find out former. Oct 10, Chris rated it it was amazing. Gilson Creek has been plagued with mysterious brutal killings, and the rumors of a werewolf behind it all haunt some of the townspeople. But that was in the past, and Sheriff Joe Fischer thought the bestial horror he'd killed was truly dead.
However, one rainy night, something stalked and savagely murdered more innocent people and the rumors begin again. Can he find and stop it in time? Glenn Rolfe has quickly become one of my favorites in this new crop of horror authors, and his lean and furiously fast-paced horror novel, while not breaking new ground with the furry shapeshifters, is an extremely enjoyable read. Oct 26, David Bernstein rated it it was amazing. Blood and Rain is a full throttle, carnage filled tale that is sure to please horror fans and especially werewolf fans. There's a ton of werewolf books out there, but this is one solid read that speeds up as you go along and keeps you turning the pages. It never lets up. And on top of the wonderful story and gruesome details, the author knows how to write.

A tangible thing the reader can fall in to and get lost. I wasn't aware how badly I was aching for a Werewolf yarn till I finished the first chapter.
From that point on I was cruising on all cylinders. I don't want to go to much into "Blood and Rain" because I want you to read it, going in as fresh as possible. You'll probably thank me as I think you are really going to enjoy it. I'll never tell him that directly. I'll keep a stoic, nonchalant, no-big-deal look on my face while I secretly froth at the mouth for his next release. Aside from being an all-around cool cat based on his online presence alone , his work speaks to me.
It channels the excitement I had as a young and burgeoning horror fan. The tingling buzz of anticipation as a new Glenn Rolfe joint is nearing release is almost as strong as the buzz the year old me had concerning the annual new Stephen King bombshell. To me, that speaks volumes.
That was a long time ago, so having that excitement return, a feeling that unfortunately doesn't come around often enough, is quite exciting. If you haven't guess by now let me put it bluntly, I loved this read, hands down it is a kick-ass great time. While "Blood and Rain" is exactly what this 39 year old adult wanted, it is precisely what the 14 year old inner child needed.
I have added it to the list of books I want to hand down to my offspring to read when they are old enough to partake in some bloody good fun! Always assuming they fall for the horror genre like I did as a youth. Lord and Savior Stephen King help them if they don't. Zakk is a big dumb animal. The Mouths of Madness Podcastshow Www. Sep 05, Paula rated it really liked it. His writing style reads like a book just begging to be adapted to the big screen, and this particular story would definitely be one I would see! Joe Fischer is a small town sheriff in Maine, a single father with a teenage daughter named Sonya. A few years back there was a rash of wild animal maulings causing the town to go into a panic until the then Deputy Fischer was able to put the beast down. But of course, that is all about to change. It all starts when a tree comes crashing down across a rain-slicked back road.
Brian, a traveler passing through has just avoided a near miss, only to come face-to-face with a creature beyond his comprehension. Over the years, the townsfolk have created an urban legend out of the past events involving the aforementioned animal maulings. Little do they know, how close to the truth they are.

Now Joe must make a decision, does he battle the creature alone, or does he enlist the aid of his fellow officers, and what about the rest of the populace, how much should they be told in order to protect themselves? This is a fast-paced story, with deaths mounting and time running out, we follow Joe as he draws upon his inner reserve to protect the ones he loves.
There are twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end how this will all play out. For those of you that are fans of the classic monster stories of old, this is one to read.

Yet the author tells the story in a way that is sure to entertain. We all know where traditional werewolf tales end up and this is a very traditional telling. Yet when we get to the rampages, there is a a sufficient amount of action and gore who keep the horror fan happy. Yet I sometimes felt there were too many town characters,.
I felt some of the tension would have worked better if we only had fewer people to watch. Eventually though, it does come down to a handful of characters and the plot is back on track.
