Maple's Lesson on Courage : Meredith R Clawson :
Rocks were heated in fires, then removed the heat with a pair of thick sticks acting as tongs or tools fashioned from antlers. The rocks were rinsed free of ash by water then placed in the sap. After 10 to 15 minutes, the rock would be removed and reheated, then returned to the sap again. There would be multiple hot rocks immersed in the sap at a given time.
Through this practice, the liquid was kept at a constant low boil which is optimal for making syrup. As a matter of interest, hot-stone cooing was used for cooking stews as well. Miss Maple's Seeds is a heartwarming story about a woman named Miss Maple who has extensive knowledge about seeds and consequently helps them out before planting.
The seeds are personified in this story like children who Miss Maple takes care of. Her repeated phrase "Take care my little ones, for the world is big and you are small" is 1. Her repeated phrase "Take care my little ones, for the world is big and you are small" is the central theme of this story. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. Miss Maples position as a caretaker and role model in the book is very touching for future teachers like myself, and the support that Miss Maple gives is what every teacher should strive for.
I gave this book four stars only because of the lack of major events in the story, but this one should be taken for face value. I would use this story in the classroom for a motivational lesson that is focused on Miss Maple's repeated phrase throughout the story. I would make an activity that makes my students analyze themselves and their place in this world, and maybe even add in a geography lesson to show the scale of the world. I would also use the seed classification page to segue into a science activity for classifying something like plants or animals.

In May sets them free with all of their knowledge to grow. Also doing activities with this book such as plating their own garden lets children develop a responsibility for taking care of the environment.
She is a loving character who could be seen as mother nature. The illustrations in this book are minimal but add character to each page and helps carry the plot. Young readers would like this book, especially if they live somewhere that has all four seasons. They would probably get excited for springtime to plant seeds. As the book covers the importance of keeping seeds warm and properly planting them, children are easily engaged by the Miss Maple as she rides on her bluebird. This book can be paired with lessons on seasons, or with a lesson on different flowers. Children could do a nature walk and observe or draw the flowers they see. Throughout the winter, the seeds stay safe and warm, inside the hollow of Miss Maple's beautiful, cozy house in the hollow of a tree. Apr 04, Kanika Reno rated it really liked it Shelves: I was pleasantly surprised with this thrift store find. Miss Maple's Seeds would be great for teaching students about caring for different seeds. Teachers could also have students plant and care for a seed as Miss Maple did hers. The colorful, brilliant paintings keep readers engaged.
Aside from just learning about caring for seeds, this book can be used to teach students that all of them are full of potential - even the grandest of trees started from a seed. Jun 03, Heather rated it liked it Shelves: The illustrations are nice, story is just so-so. All the creatures that come to visit bring food..
Seems the author saw an issue and didn't deal with it. Miss Maple teaches the seeds how to be a seed and shows them how some seeds travel by water, or air yet when they are ready to leave she puts each one in a little boat and they sail away. Cute illustrations but some aspects of the story don't make sense. Nov 09, Rachel rated it it was amazing Shelves: This picture book brought tears to my eyes!
