Becoming a Food Scientist: To Graduate School and Beyond

Putting those together led me to major in Biochemistry. And grad school could have been like that, or even better , if I had been more proactive. Looking back there are four major lessons I wish someone would have shouted to me as I ended undergrad and began to move forward in my food science career. I thought since I went to a school in the University of California system for undergrad, I should stick with the UC system for grad school. However, only applying to graduate programs in the UC system narrowed down my list of potential graduate schools significantly.

I was too focused on the name of the department and the section or emphasis; That narrowed my list of potential schools down even further to one university. In reality, I could have pursued the most interesting parts of metabolic biochemistry from several different departments — nutrition, chemistry, biology, agriculture etc. What I Should Have Done: I asked so many graduate students how they got into graduate school, but I never thought to ask them how they picked a graduate school.

University of California - Davis

The year I started my college studies in biochemistry was the same year I first discovered energy drinks. While I was completing my undergrad degree, I was also starting to collect notes on how the ingredients affected the metabolic cycles I was trying to memorize. I should have given that passion more validation — I should have recognized that this was an area I could pursue in grad school and beyond.

At the time though it never occurred to me I had that option. Looking back, it feels like I picked a house to live in based on how pretty the front yard looked. My professors have embedded within me a love to read, and I have read more books that were not required by my classes, within my two years here, than I had in all of middle school and high school. Even though I did not focus on the social life at Clemson when I first started, I quickly was able to find friends from all backgrounds, some being from various clubs and fraternities, to those on the football team.

College game day at Clemson is quite possibly the most exciting sports venue in the United States! Clemson has given me the ability to grow as a person, both academically and socially, and I see myself as being a better man since coming Clemson than I was two years ago before I enrolled here! I love love LOVE this university. From the moment you step on campus, it is clear that UW Madison has Badger pride and cares for the well-being of its students. Not only is it a well-known, prestigious campus, but the students and faculty here are welcoming, kindhearted, and are always up for a good time.

The service learning projects give you the chance to do things in the Boston community that can be applied to future jobs and give you wonderful experiences. It is a small school so that limits some of what is available but the Colleges of the Fenway partnership of the colleges in the area gives students plenty of classes and activities to do right around the corner.

You also can not beat the location, right in the heart of Fenway you have a wonderful area surrounding the school. As well as the T to get you any where else you might want to go.

I have loved my time at UNC so far. My first year was very difficult, but that was because college is such a hard adjustment and I was also taking the wrong classes. Although it is a very difficult school, and sometimes it is too hard for no reason, I believe that it will all be worth it after I graduate because the school will provide me with great opportunities because of its academic reputation. The campus is absolutely beautiful, the parties are great, Chapel Hill is a quaint little area, and of course, Carolina athletics especially basketball are unmatched. One of my favorite things about UNC is the study abroad department.

There are so many different programs to choose from all over the world. You can go for a year, a semester, or a summer.

Agricultural Food & Nutritional Science Graduate Programs

There are programs for every major, including hard sciences such as chemistry. UNC is a great school and I am lucky I go here. The campus is generally nice with the exception of some outdated buildings. Endless resources available from advising to food pantries. The rec center is definitely a highlight on this campus, 3 pools, multiple basketball courts, beach volleyball courts, and tons of machines.

There are also classes available. I've never had problems getting classes despite being a science and math major. Does lack racial diversity. San Luis Obispo is the perfect college town and campus combination with plenty to do in the area from hiking to eating good food to drive in movie theaters! Party scene is great- work hard play hard mentality at hand.

Nutrition vs. Food Science: What’s The Difference?

There is usually something to do everynight of the week. Heyyyyy, so let me tell you about MSU! Michigan State overall is a great school. The campus is very beautiful and spacious. The food is okay nothing special, it gets very repetitive. The buses are pretty good, sometimes late but usually on time. Everyone on campus is overall pretty. Overall MSU is a great school and should be one of your top choices! I will be an incoming freshman at this college. However, my dad, his siblings, and multiple friends of mine have attended this school so I visit quite a bit.

I've been to parties with my friends, on strolls around the campus with my family, and on official college tours here. It's a great college town, and most people who I talk to who have come here say that there is always something to do, the academics are great and will land you a good job somewhere, and overall, they had a great college experience. I hope that I get accepted here so I can experience what it's really like to be a student!
