At first I found the plot a little slow but gradually the mystery of the dead man and my growing fondness for some of the characters kept me reading on. A pleasant little slice of life story.

Perhaps recommended for someone who likes an escape with Miss Read once in a while. I enjoyed it but as more of a pleasant than a "wow" read. Aug 20, Normalene rated it it was amazing. Set in a small town near Penzance, England in , this is a gentle mystery with not much violence, just the original dead body mystery.

But Miss Effie Pengelly is fun to follow and the supporting characters are equally well-fleshed-out. Such a comedy of errors with eveyone except Effie and her beau hiding secrets, makes for lots of humor. I can see why this author is so popular.
