The Enchantment of the Fairies: Blue
If you like somewhat speculative fiction, your pleasure may rate Baptiste's work even higher. I received a copy of the book from the author who asked me for a review. The plot is intelligent and well designed, it keeps you intrigued about what would happen next, but at the same time, it gives you hints, so that you can discover the secrets of the story together with the main character. I loved the story and I got absorbed into the world created by the author where the plot takes I received a copy of the book from the author who asked me for a review.
I loved the story and I got absorbed into the world created by the author where the plot takes place. The story takes place in the Europe of Charlemagne; the two main characters of the story meet at Capital of the Empire, Aachen, where they create a very strong friendship that last along their lives. The story of Red shows the life of Philipp from childhood to adulthood, he is basically a servant who eventually becomes a mayor political figure in the court of Charlemagne, with the help of fortune, connections and hard work.
Philipp is the image of the hero, who fights for justice and seeks to defend his ideals; he is an example of hard work, determination and loyalty to the end. He is a devoted Christian, and he considers himself a protector of Christianity, but his Christian beliefs are challenged when he meets people from others religions, along his life and discovers that they are not better or worse, just people like himself.
Here, the book explores the horrors of war; while many other authors tend to present war as something romantic or heroic, Baptiste attempts to show the reality of war, trying to picture war as it is. It reminds you that war is the same today, as it was a thousand years ago. I found the war accounts well plotted; the strategies are realistic and convincing. It is a love story with a twist, but I will not spoil the end for you. The book is full of romantic moments, but at the same time it shows you that in life nothing can be taken for granted.
I recommend the book, the number of stars will depend on your taste, but I found it an enjoyable story, give it a go and decide for yourself Jun 07, Romancing the Book rated it liked it. There are strong view Reviewed by Robin Book provided by the author for review Review originally posted on Romancing the Book This is the first of two books of which I read backwards. There are strong views on many subjects throughout the book.
Baptiste did a very good job of researching her subject while showing the horrors of what it was like to live through the time of war.
Showing that war in the past is the same as it is today. She had a way of showing the history rather than telling which made it seem more real…alive somehow. While the showing she inserted a young boy named Philipp who started out a servant bringing himself up through the ranks to a Mayor political figure. He works hard, shows loyalty to others and has a strong determined attitude to want to change. Along with making connections along the way he is a success story.
Philipp meets a young girl named Jana who is his driving force to become better; showing us that there is a reason for meeting people throughout our lives. Overall this is a well written book that has a lot of history within the frame of the story. But that really is easy to overlook. I enjoyed this book and as I said earlier would have wanted to have read this first.
Initially thought this would be a light read focused on children, but it really is quite rich in content and most importantly something that will interest readers of any age. The Volume Red tells the story of Philipp, the main character of the book, his life is very inspirational, his courage and determination are to be admired. He is a lesson on Initially thought this would be a light read focused on children, but it really is quite rich in content and most importantly something that will interest readers of any age. He is a lesson on discipline and hard work, and a very likable character actually.
In general the characters of the story are rich in complexity and personality, they are well designed making the story compelling; the plot keeps you interested from beginning to end. After leaving his house in a small villages, he travels to Aachen where he meets a girl named Jana, falling in love with her at first sight. He spends most of the book trying to become worthy of her, she becomes his main motivation to succeed. When Philipp grows up, he becomes a military leader, the war sequences are well planned and the strategies are realistic and believable.
This part was of particular interest for me, since I'm planning to walk "el camino" one day. Along the book, you learn a lot about the history of Europe, but you don't feel schooled; instead, you feel as if you are told a story by a friend who is narrating previous events of his life. This is an interesting approach by the author. The end of the book is a bit sad, I wish there was a sequel, with a happier ending. For the rest I liked it and I recommend it. I hate to have to say this, as it's a novella, but I couldn't finish this story.

This means this review is going to be reasons why I couldn't finish it rather than a review of the book itself. In this book there are no speech marks what-so-ever. Instead the author uses a dash and never used separate lines for difficult characters. This made everything incredibly different to follow and I f I hate to have to say this, as it's a novella, but I couldn't finish this story.
See a Problem?
The author admitted to me there were some grammar errors as English was not her first language but the speech made everything impossible to follow. As well as this the book was written in a strange style. It was 1st person, past-tense but it read more like a transcript of someone narrating it out loud rather than a novel and for me I just couldn't get my head around it. The writing was blunt statements with very little description. That is all I really have to say as I didn't get far enough into the book so I can't comment on the plot.
I feel this book needs a good editor whose first language is English to get rid of all the errors so it flows easily or the author needs to write in their native language and hire a translator.
