Experience Croatia (2 Bags and a Pack)

You decide which islands you want to visit and for how long. But, before you even consider a holiday you need to make sure you have all the travel necessities to make your vacation comfortable. There is nothing worse than getting to a destination and realizing your missing something. Although we too had dreamt of sailing along the Dalmatian coast, it became less and less appealing the more we researched local sailing companies. The distance between islands can be quite far, and on a sailboat it takes a good amount of time to get from one island to another.

So, if your desire is simply to cruise the waterways of the Adriatic and get a small sampling of the islands, these cruises might be for you. There is a network of ferries that conveniently runs between the islands. These ships are certainly not glamorous sailboats, to say the least, but it gets you to the islands at a very affordable rate, allowing you more time and money to actually to explore the islands! We simply showed up at the port in Split, purchased our tickets, and walked on board.

If you want to bring a car on board the ferry, the price will obviously be higher, and it is important to note that the car-ferries do not operate on all routes, and you will need to book early in peak season. View off the bow of the Jadrolinija Ferry heading toward the island of Vis. The cigarette smoke on the deck outside was unbearable, so we found a quiet corner on the interior of the ship and gazed out the large windows at the other boats cruising the waterway as we made the 2-hour minute journey from Split to Vis.

Food and drink prices on board were a little hefty. Jadrolinija Ferry pulling into the harbor on the island of Vis. The journey to Vis was smooth and seamless. We ventured out to the top deck as we pulled into port. The views were just what we had hoped for! Gorgeous azure water, loads of boats, and absolutely adorable brick buildings lining the coast. We had a few affordable days on the island of Vis, renting an Airbnb apartment, cooking many of our own meals, and buying bottles of local wine at the supermarket to cut down on the cost of eating out.

Tickets could only be booked one day in advance at the local ticket office and you want to be sure to reserve your spot, as these journeys can and do sell out. Kapetan Luka has three high-speed foot-passenger catamarans and one motor yacht taking passengers to and from the mainland Split and Dubrovnik and between several of the southern islands. The only disadvantage of the Kapetan Luka ferries is that they are enclosed. There is no deck on which you can go out and enjoy the scenery, and not all seats are next to a window. So, it may not exactly be a scenic journey, but again it gets you where you want to go and allows for more time exploring the islands! In Hvar we rented another nice AirBnB apartment, packed picnic lunches for the beach, and cooked many meals in to save money. The harbor of Hvar as seen from the Fortress Fortica Spanjola. Again, tickets must be purchased one day in advance from the ticket office located right near where the boat docks in the harbor.

We found affordable accommodation through Booking. There was plenty to explore right around the main harbor town, while providing options to explore the island further if you so desired, and time permitting. And so, our time on the islands had come to an end, and so too did our Croatia island hopping experience. We were able to book our reservation days in advance, unlike on the islands of Vis and Hvar, so we booked our final journey the day we arrived in port. They are constantly looking for alternative destinations and affordable methods of travel as they travel round-the-world. The sailing days can be short, which is a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it or how hungover you are. This route is the most well known and draws a LOT of people from around the world. I loved that in the course of the week I made friends from over 10 different nations. Most of whom I still remain close friends with years later. First off, you want a group of open-minded, fun-loving people with at the very least, a mild sense of responsibility.

Before You Go

TYW is all about having a good time, but keep in mind that carrying your own weight on costs, clean up on the boat throughout the week and planning is essential for all crew members. Nobody likes to talk about this stuff. But, what do you get when you mix cocktails, sunscreen, and a boat deck? A blonde and a broken arm. A broken arm on a remote island means a first-class helicopter ride and thousands of dollars in medical bills. Consider your skipper an extra head to count when doing your food and booze shopping for the boat. A well-fed skipper is a happy skipper. Yogurt and granola with fresh fruit is pretty much my go-to breakfast on sailing trips.
