Apr 17, Praj rated it really liked it Shelves: It depicts Lisa's journey from being abused by her father in her childhood to becoming a high class prostitute. Her sexual calender further propels her in being a decorative arm candy of her wealthy lover and eventually leads into Lisa running an escort service.
Words fail me when it comes to describing the readings. Memoirs of a courtesan escort could not get more raw and sensuous. This book is overtly sexual, erotic and graphica 'Red Velvet' is a poignant memoirs of an elite call girl Lisa Lou.
This book is overtly sexual, erotic and graphically mind-blowing. Apr 19, Felicity rated it really liked it. I loved this book, it satisfied my curiosity on the life of a working girl. It's so opposite to my own lifestyle that I sometimes cannot comprehend how you get yourself into such a situation, but hearing this woman's story was amazing. This woman was an intelligent, educated mother who did what she needed to do to get by and I guess it also shows that you can't really stereotype who works in these types of industries.
I found it really interesting and sad at the same time. I closed the book hopi I loved this book, it satisfied my curiosity on the life of a working girl. I closed the book hoping that this lady was living much happier times now than when the book was being written. Aug 09, Kathy Duey added it. At first it was really interesting but somehow right after the middle part of the book it got so monotonous that i just have to finish to know if she did have a happy ending bec. It was very descriptive and poignant experiences from past clientele, the author's views are honest and very raw Yet i must say i did finished it and wasn't appeased about whatever happened after Mr.

Lovely and fluently written story. Jul 15, Kelly Florentia rated it it was amazing. But who will win the love of the red queen? I absolutely loved this exciting tale about love, friendship, mistakes and choices. I found the cast of characters very real and engaging; so much so that they had me up way past my bedtime most nights because I was dying to find out what happened to them next!

Starting in the 60s, the author skilfully moves the story through the decades and into the 90s, weaving in some twists and surprises. I loved the time span in this novel. Girl in Red Velvet is the first and only book I have read by Margaret James and so it was exciting to receive a signed copy from ReviewSpot.
I always feel totally unqualified to review works by other authors.

Lily Denham is the young woman at the centre of a love-triangle. They strike up an intense friendship — they call her The Red Queen - and the novel follows the fortunes of the three as they study, graduate, and earn their living in the big wide world which opens up to them following university.
University life is as I imagined it would be.
Lots of parties and intrigues and, if Lily and her friends are anything to go by, lots of sex and alcohol. Studying seems to have been an after-thought, but Max is able to pass exams without studying too hard whilst Lily and Harry have to swot. There are plenty of references to life in the s when everything was beginning to change socially and in the work place.
I enjoyed the images painted by Margaret as she mentioned the food and beverages consumed, fashions and music, the wonderful Indian wedding Lily attended and how her future career was influenced by the beautiful fabrics and designs she experienced, eventually sending her to India seeking fabrics for her new business.
Red Velvet: Memoirs of a Working Girl
The descriptions of her time in India are quite heady. The smells, the noise, and the bustle are all captured and leap off the page transporting the reader with her as she rides in a taxi with her contact, Sita Banerjee, experiencing India at a time when Hippies were looking for the answers to life and the universe with Gurus and holy men. Max disappears abroad, having adventures as a travel writer. Harry is more of a plodder, the reliable one whose career stretches ahead of him - all planned out and predictable.
Lily becomes a businesswoman and is the thread which binds them. An enjoyable read with lots of atmosphere and little touches which bring the city of Oxford alive during the s and which gives a glimpse of life for women heading into the s and beyond, when anything and everything was possible. Jun 24, Elizabeth Ducie rated it it was amazing Shelves: Lily meets Max and Henry in the s on her first day at Oxford - and they fall in love.
Different kinds of love, but strong and enduring nonetheless. And over the next three decades, they all make choices which significantly affect their own lives and those of the others around them. Margaret James once again brings all the emotions to the fore: The cultural references of the Lily meets Max and Henry in the s on her first day at Oxford - and they fall in love. The cultural references of the s and s in particular brought back many memories. This is the sixth in the Charton Minster series and I loved it just as much as all the others.
A great read; highly recommended. May 30, Angela Britnell rated it really liked it. A thoroughly enjoyable story that will draw you into the lives of the three main characters from the very beginning when Lily flees her wedding. The question is who was the bridegroom to be? Starting in s Oxford Lily meets Harry and Max on her first day there and is instantly attracted to them both. The young men are best friends but very different characters — Harry is quiet and studious and Max is the reckless rule-breaking one always pushing the boundaries.
Lily if afraid of what she feel A thoroughly enjoyable story that will draw you into the lives of the three main characters from the very beginning when Lily flees her wedding.

Aug 20, Janet Panter rated it really liked it. So I jumped at the chance to read and review this book for free thanks Choc-Lit!
I was a bit disappointed that it didn't have the complexity of language and depth of characters that her earlier novels had but perhaps the readers of today want a novel that is much quicker and easier to read. Anyway, this is still a good story, if a little Hadn't read anything by Margaret James for well over 20 years but I had fond memories of The Treasures of Existence and Fortune's Favourite Child.
Anyway, this is still a good story, if a little predictable - it wasn't hard to guess how the plot would develop. Perfect to read on a short-haul flight, if you start reading in the departure lounge you'll probably have finished it by the time you land. May 12, Debbie Southwell rated it really liked it. This is the first book I have read by Margaret James and I have to say it was a pleasant surprise. Max, Lily and Harry come together at University during the sixties and this book takes you through their lives, through the ups and downs of friendships and relationships throughout the decades.
I loved the characters, who I found easy to relate to, and really enjoyed the way that they were portrayed with all of their flaws and insecurities. I have to admit I did find parts of it a little far-fetched This is the first book I have read by Margaret James and I have to say it was a pleasant surprise. I have to admit I did find parts of it a little far-fetched but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story.
I found this an easy to read, well written story and would certainly recommend it. Her life had gone wrong after she gave up sex work, and she was blogging about that. And she read my posts too, and she commented on what I was doing as I was starting out. We were both anonymous for reasons of what we are and were being unable to be public….. So kind and sensible to me.
