And Abel brought the firslings of his flock, along with some fat. God respected Abel, but he had no respect for Cain's offering. Does God respect anyone? Cain was angry and looked sad. God said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel? What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out from the ground. Now you are cursed. You won't be as succssful a farmer as you would have been. And you'll be a fugative and a vagabond. My punishment is more than I can bear.

You have driven off the face of the earth. I will be hidden from your face. Does God know and see everything? I will be a fugitive and a vagobond, and whoever finds me will kill me. God said to Cain, "Whoever kills you will suffer a seven-fold vengeance. God put a mark on Cain, so that whoever found him wouldn't kill him. Genealogies of Genesis

This is not the activity one would expect from a fugitive and a vagabond. Cain is worried after killing Abel and says, "Every one who finds me shall slay me. God is worried too. In the Masoretic, Vulgate and the Samaritan Pentateuch the method of starting from the birth of Noah and adding exactly years until Shem, and adding another years until the birth of Arphaxad Born 2 years after the flood would be the same year as the death of Methuselah following the above chart. Based on the Masoretic Text, counting years on the above chart will result in being the th year of Noah's life, the year of the death of Methuselah and year that the flood began.

A comparison of the Genesis 5 numbers Adam through Noah in the above table shows that the ages when the sons were born plus the remainders equal the totals given in each version, but each version uses different numbers to arrive at these totals. The three versions agree on some of the total ages at death, but many of the other numbers differ by exactly The Septuagint numbers for the ages of the fathers at the birth of their sons, are in many instances greater than the corresponding numbers in the other two versions.
