What are we doing? Whom are we following? How are we to act? Why are we acting as we are?

All of these questions can be answered in one word: Better, what should we be doing? What Jesus told us to.

How are we to live? Why should we do all the multitudinous things that anyone who is serious about sanctity must do? Because Jesus wants us to. In order to make our reflections as definite and practical as possible, let us simply look at the following aspects of our subject. Thirty years of teaching have taught me, if you want to concentrate a lot of matter into a short space, always give your students, or here, your listeners, a preview. Then fill out the frame.

This is no mere subject. This is an ocean. First, to ask the meaning of the name Jesus. And fourth, its place in our lives. Meaning, promise, power and place in our lives. And the evangelist goes on recalling the prophesy of Isaiah. Two names are synonyms - Jesus and Emmanuel. Why is Jesus the one Who will save His people from their sins?

Because He is God with us. The invisible God became a visible man. Talk about being with us. He could be seen, heard, touched, felt. And His touching us and our being touched by Him is the means, the channel, by which the Almighty become a man, saves us from our sins. Then, in one crisp verse when the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave Him the name, Jesus; the name the angel had given Him before His conception.

So far the meaning with one more word added. O, it is wonderful. There were difficult conditions in that Welsh village, and it seemed impossible to get the people to believe.

Power in the Name

But a man and a woman there asked us to come and stay with them. It will never do to give way to human opinions. If God says a thing, you are to believe it. I told the people that I would not eat anything that night. When I got to bed it seemed as if the devil tried to place on me everything that he had placed on that poor man in the bed. When I awoke I had a cough and all the weakness of a tubercular patient. I rolled out of bed on to the floor and cried out to God to deliver me from the power of the devil.

I shouted loud enough to wake everybody in the house, but nobody was disturbed. God gave victory, and I got back into bed again as free as ever I was in my life. The Lord says that He will raise him up. When we went to the house where Lazarus lived there were eight of us altogether.

There Is Power In The Name Of Jesus

No one can prove to me that God does not always answer prayer. He always does more that that. He always gives the exceedingly abundant above all we ask or think. O, it was lovely! Five times the power of God fell and then it remained. But the person who was in the bed was unmoved. Two years previous someone had come along and had tried to raise him up, and the devil had used his lack of success as a means of discouraging Lazarus. Forget everything else except what God says about Jesus.

Here I am helpless. I cannot lift my hands, nor even lift a spoon to my mouth.

I have asked the Lord to never let me tell this story except as it was, for I realize that God cannot bless exaggerations. This is all God. We sang the doxology as he walked down the steps. It was soon noised abroad that Lazarus had been raised up and the people came from Llanelly and all the district round to see him and hear his testimony. And God brought salvation to many.

This man told right out in the open air what God had done, and as a result many were convicted and converted. All this came through the name of Jesus, through faith in His name, yea, the faith that is by Him gave this sick man perfect soundness in the presence of them all. Peter and John were helpless, were illiterate, they had no college education. They had been with Jesus. To them had come a wonderful revelation of the power of the name of Jesus. They had handed out the bread and fish after Jesus had multiplied them.

They had sat at the table with Him and John had often gazed into His face. Peter had often to be rebuked, but Jesus manifested His love to Peter through it all. Yea, He loved Peter, the wayward one. I have been wayward, I have been stubborn, I had an unmanageable temper at one time, but how patient He has been. I am here to tell you that there is power in Jesus and in His wondrous name to transform anyone, to heal anyone.

Poor Peter, and poor John! They had no money! But they had faith, they had the power of the Holy Ghost, they had God. You can have God even though you have nothing else. Even though you have lost your character you can have God. I have seen the worst men saved by the power of God. I was one day preaching about the name of Jesus and there was a man leaning against a lamp-post, listening. It took a lamp-post to enable him to keep on his feet. We had finished our open-air meeting, and the man was still leaning against the post. He told me that he was on his way to kill his unfaithful wife, but that he had heard me speaking about the power of the name of Jesus and could not get away.

He said that he felt just helpless. I took him to my home and put on him a new suit. I saw that there was something in that man that God could use. His faithless wife was living with another man, but he invited her back to the home that he had prepared for her. God made that man a minister wherever he went. There is power in the name of Jesus everywhere. God can save to the uttermost. There comes before me a meeting we had in Stockholm that I shall ever bear in mind. There was a home for incurables there and one of the inmates was brought to the meeting.

He had palsy and was shaking all over. He stood up before 3, people and came to the platform, supported by two others. Let go of all external ways and see the marvelous way that will appear before you when you trust this word spoken in His name. Do all the doors of escape from physical or mental bondage in your daily life seem closed to you? Jesus Christ says, "I am the door. By it — this door — we may enter into visible possession of the good that He has for us.

We must first stop all external planning for escape and then enter in by faith and by continual affirmation that Christ is now the open door made visible. Does all your life seem dark and gloomy, nay, covered by a thick black darkness wherein is no light at all? Remembering that Jesus Christ is "God-with-us" made visible, recall what He said, "I am the light of the world: Take up the name and remember that "whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do. Your darkness will soon glow with the true "light which lighteth every man, coming into the world.

10 Reasons To Believe There is Power in the Name of Jesus

Even if it is, just let go of everything else and take up the all-powerful, all-prevailing name: Christ is God made visible. The life more abundant is this same Christ within me made visible now. He that believeth on this name the power of the name , though he were dead yet am I his resurrection. Christ in us is our all-sufficiency in all things. It is a finished condition as far as He is concerned; but we must bring it forth into the material world of manifestation by claiming it speaking the word of it in His name and sticking to it through thick and thin no matter what the appearance is.

There is a marvelous power for protection and deliverance in this name when it is simply and earnestly spoken. In times of great mental disturbance or of lack of wisdom, in times when peace and harmony seem to have fled from the home or when one is in the presence of impure-minded persons or of any false teaching or association, just quietly repeating within one's own heart the sacred and all-powerful name of Jesus Christ will not only keep one's own mind.

And all that is not of Christ flees away as did the devil-possessed men who cried out, "What have we to do with thee, thou Son of God? Seek often to retire from the world of noise "Enter into thine inner chamber, and. Sit down quietly and alone and with closed eyes begin to say: He is within me. You do not need to say anything else but just repeat the name. It will bring wonderful realization of the divine presence. One moment's real conscious communion with the Son of God is of more worth than a thousand worlds.
