On the Head of a Pin: A Thaddeus Lewis Mystery
Then I have a fairly strong liking for historical crime fiction when it's well researched and reasonably well written which this book most definitely is.

I also like a book when I learn some history which I didn't know while reading it and I like it a lot more when some Googling proves that history accurate. Many times when going to High School in Belleville I walked along Everett Street past the "Wesleyan Methodist" church and having been raised as a good Anglican I knew nothing about any kind of Methodists.
I pretty well knew all about Bill Johnston - "The Pirate of the Thousand Islands" - as I had the pleasure of a cruise through the Thousand Islands on the "Kawartha Voyageur" with Ontario Waterways Cruises in when they had a local historian on board with all sorts of slides and pics and material but I knew very little about "The Battle of the Windmill" however I'm quite interested in the history of the McKenzie Rebellion having lived in Woodbridge within sight of the McKenzie homestead and now living in the Niagara region and having explored the historical plaques at "The Battle of Short Hills".
Strange coincidence - I have a present day friend named William "Bill" Johnston"!! I haven't followed up on him yet but I intend to! The mystery and the murders themselves were quite well written and I suspected the murderer fairly early but I was also almost as sure that he wasn't the guilty one but another of Thaddeus's acquaintances was so the story kept me hooked right to the end. I have acquired the rest of the books in this series and have them all on my TBR list.

Jan 07, Carol rated it it was amazing. OK, I'm a little biased. My mother grew up in the region where this book takes place with ancestry going back to and even before the period being portrayed. I found the historical setting fascinating. The mystery itself is in a different cast than most. The hero is a Methodist preacher who recognizes a pattern to some murders and, when the law enforcement of the time does not identify the deaths as murder, starts to pursue the mystery on his travels.
The mystery element is slow paced, fitting OK, I'm a little biased. The mystery element is slow paced, fitting in around the hero's family problems, church issues and traveling ministry. If you are looking for fast paced mystery, this isn't it. If you are interested in the post history of the Kingston area, this is an enjoyable way to learn.
Nov 23, Samuel rated it really liked it Shelves: It's not great literature, but I enjoyed the description of early 19th century Methodism in Upper Canada, included the differences between the British and American Methodists. The plot was engaging. This is the first in a series, so I'm guessing subsequent titles in the series will improve.
Oct 08, Mar rated it liked it. Interesting mystery in a series set around Methodist preacher Thaddeus Lewis who rides the circuit in the Kingston area of now Ontario Canada during the 's. In this first novel, he attempts to find a serial killer while ministering to the needs of his parishioners and his family. Aug 22, Theresa rated it it was amazing.

Goes great with coffee! Jun 28, Caroline Ingvaldsen rated it really liked it. The first in a series, an intriguing historical mystery set in Prince Edward County at the time of the Mackenzie Rebellion starring "saddlebag" Methodist preacher Thaddue Lewis. Oct 09, Joyce rated it it was ok.
I expected more of a mystery. However, for me, history overtook the story. Yes No Thanks for your feedback! This a historical intrigue. The story unfolds during the s and highlights the living conditions, concerns and sentiments of the time. I felt very connected, and was drawn in to the mindset each of the main characters. The story has enough twists and turns so as not to be transparent. The writing style is refined, and in itself, helps transport the reader back into that era. I would read the story again, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and "who donnits".

As she puts the pieces of the crimes together, the author offers interesting insights into the role of religion in early Canada, the rivalry between various denominations and the prevailing distrust of American influence from across the border. A good read made better by its obvious affection for its subject and the locale in which the action takes place. Kellough weaves a tale rich with historical detail and intrigue Nathan Elliott, the prodigal son of Wellington, returned briefly to Prince Edward County before being reported dead in an accident.
The historical setting and issues are nicely integrated into the plot and the unorthodox solution is well-devised. I would recommend this novel for anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
