Life on the Farm
When does your working day start and finish? The most difficult part is probably when something does not go hand in hand with what we are striving for. On the contrary, the most satisfying is when we manage to fulfil our visions, following the path that we set for ourselves. In other words, when we are successful in what we do. My working days start sometimes at 6 a.
I work every second weekend and my holiday is 10 days a year. We focus mainly on grasslands, but barley is also often used. Iceland has a temperate climate, but a very shot summer season.

Therefore, we must carefully consider what crop to plant. Our company does not fall within any of the categories of farms that are partly subsided by the government. We thus do not get any money, just like farmers specializing in poultry production. Do you think that the Icelandic agricultural system benefits from subsidies, or do you find them rather harmful?
I am personally against any system of subsidy. There are other, more effective ways to support local production and farmers. Political questions can only be answered in essays. My opinion is that most governments lack a full understanding of agricultural needs.
Agriculture is closely connected with the necessity to produce food at the local level, which, I believe, is the way for a healthy society. Instead of supporting excessive imports of goods and giving preferential treatment to short-term businesses, which is beneficial mostly for supermarkets, not local farmers and consumers, they should put emphasis on businesses that are focused on long-term economic benefits in a given region.
What would you say to people who believe that conventional farming has a negative impact on the environment? I would tell them that facts also need to be taken into account. Faith should never be more important that reality. It is nowhere stated that conventional farming is automatically harmful to the environment. It depends solely on us what attitude we will take and especially — how we will farm. Sustainability is sometimes used as a clever phrase with no real meaning. You know, there are some things where we need to do more than just talk.
Sustainability is important for future generations and generally for society. Without it, there will be only short-term production with very little or no benefits for consumers. I think that any production is good as long as there is a good intention behind it. On the other hand, we should not have prejudice against other production methods that are recognized by legislation and consumers. What changes would you predict for global agriculture in the next 25 years? In my opinion, population growth will be the driving force determining further development and the future of all mankind.
More people will need more food — it is simple and difficult at the same time. Do you know someone in your neighbourhood that gave up working in agriculture?
6 Things No One Tells You About Living on a Farm
Yes, I do and there are many reasons behind it. Cities are growing and, by contrast, the demand for labour in agriculture is decreasing. There is also much greater demand for specializations, which does not suit everyone. From my perspective, this concept was created to describe something negative in modern agriculture, which is often associated with poor animal welfare or using methods that have negative impact on the environment.
I think that the parameter expressing when farming becomes industrial is still unknown to us. Do you think that the community of farmers gets enough respect from the public? In general, I believe it does. However, nowadays, it is more difficult because modern consumers are more, or rather less aware of what agriculture truly is and how products are manufactured. It is important to spread awareness among people about what we do and why in order to maintain a positive view of our activities.
I think that there must be a strong logical argument for GM foods as it is a complex and expensive method which is carefully, scientifically studied and the most modern technologies are used. It seems to me that a lot of people are initially afraid of the unknown or of what they do not fully understand yet. However, as long as there is no clearly demonstrable evidence that GM food is harmful, I cannot say anything negative about it.
I believe that, eventually, it is up to consumers whether they do or do not decide for this or other food. They are the ultimate judges of what we do. I have noticed no major impacts so far. The truth is that the annual snow showers are smaller and smaller, but we see this as a positive thing here. There is no doubt that global warming will have catastrophic consequences for life on Earth in the future.
However, the question remains how much we are responsible for it. I trust that we all try to contribute to it as little as possible. What are your future goals and visions regarding the future direction of your company? What would be your three wishes if you managed to catch a goldfish? If I caught a goldfish, I would throw it back into the water as fast as I could, even with the three wishes.
What advice would you give to young people who would like to start agriculture business with no previous experience? If someone wants to become a farmer, the best thing is to just start doing it. People should do what they enjoy and what they like as then everything goes better and one feels more fulfilled.
A substantial part of my activities on the farm this year consisted of working with agricultural machinery and working in the fields. For example, I assisted in the cultivation of the soil, which was necessary for good establishment of spring barley.

Since the harvested product would never reach the desired humidity for storage and further manipulation, we had to dry it in a high-performance device designed by Alvan Blanch, a British manufacturing and project engineering company. We used the Continuous Double Flow Grain type of drier, which is at the very cutting edge in its class. Grain is fed into the feed hopper - there are different ways of doing this.
Drier may be fed by gravity and have a spreader hopper, be fed mechanically by flow and return conveyor or auger box or have an extended hopper and be fed on demand which is controlled by high and low level probes. The hopper distributes the grain onto the top drying bed via a control dam, which allows depth of grain to be varied. Two twin-stage automatic pressure jet burners are located in the main furnace inlet to heat the air being drawn through this main inlet by the hot fans.
The product is conveyed by the continuous heavy-duty chain and slat system - this conveys the product over the drying beds. It can also be seen in the picture that there are two drying beds, top and bottom, which consist of louvered floors through which heated air is blown to release the moisture from the product on the beds. In a bottom part there is one axial flow cooling fan. To be exact the cooling fan is located in the bottom plenum chamber in the dividing wall between the hot and cold sections and draws ambient air to blow through the final bed section of the drier.
The moist air is exhausted out of the drier through side and rear exhaust panels. For the first time in the company's history, this year the management decided to launch a very nice project, the basic idea of which was to turn about 20 pigs out to range freely in a paddock on the farm's grounds.
As part of my job description, I was required to take care of the herd and carefully monitor and evaluate the process of adaptation of each pig to new conditions. After the first hours of careful observing, it was already clear that this step will bring us a lot of very noteworthy and valuable information. Before the project was launched, my aim was to equip myself with as much knowledge as possible to be able to understand, recognize and identify any symptoms and possible changes in the pig's behaviour.
I read articles by prominent personalities from various countries, including publications by scientists who focused on studying and observing the various stages of the life of pigs, as well as different veterinary views. It should be emphasized that most of their conclusions agree on that fact the pigs are one of the smartest animal species on Earth. Although it is not easy to measure intelligence in animals, there are facts that say that pigs are even smarter than dogs and cats and we can put them on the same level as primates, elephants or dolphins; furthermore, we can compare their abilities to those of three-year-old children.

I even studied a specialized publication published by the University of Cambridge, written by University Professor Donal M. In this publication, he stated that pigs are very well aware of their existence. Mr Geir Gunnar Geirsson says: Now, however, it is very interesting to see how the pigs are able to acclimatize to the Icelandic environment that is not entirely their own. This experiment was not launched for economic reasons, but rather to revive a tradition that is perhaps a bit forgotten today.
I remember that when I was young, we would raise pigs in a free range environment and move them from place to place. At present, they are hardly seen here and our aim is to change this. In addition, we really like this experiment. It is often fun to watch the piggies frolicking in the paddock. Since this method of farming proved successful, we are planning to build more fences next year that will accommodate three times more animals and also to build shelters and reserve a space where they will wallow in mud.
Its aim is also to increase public awareness and the awareness of companies in regard to greenhouse gas emissions. Success is achieved by making it possible for individual parties to take responsibility for their own emissions and respond to negative effects by tangible means. Already twenty years ago, Mr Geirsson, senior, started to plant trees around their family estates. At first it seemed that he would not succeed, mainly due to the climatic conditions that made it very difficult for the trees to grow, often causing their death.
However, he decided not to "throw in the towel" and simply did not give up. I see Nature as a living being. It is the fertile lap of Mother Earth and I think that we should keep ourselves in vigilance and take care of it. We reap what we sow. Nature has always had and always will have the last word. With this support It is not one to invest any real money in. My farm just quit working and lost all working factories and animals and boats and fields of product. This is a pure rip off.
