A Bakers Dozen - My Top Thirteen Favorite Gay Englishmen
It was a new concept to me. But as Francis Nevins himself taught me back in the s, arguing with the critic is one of the delights of reading any book of criticism. This is without question the definitive book on Ellery Queen. Ten years ago Gauntlet Press and editor Tony Albarella inaugurated a wildly, even recklessly ambitious publishing event: The ten-volume series As Timeless as Infinity: Appearing annually, the last volume was finally published at the beginning of I helped proofread the first few of the books.
Tony Albarella has performed a great service in rescuing this material from the obscurity of library collections and dusty personal files. A major publishing event this year was the appearance from Counterpoint of two volumes, New Collected Poems and This Day: Many people think of Wendell Berry first as an environmental essayist or as a novelist of rural themes, but for me he is primarily a poet, and these two books confirm his status as a significant one.
In a world filled with endless noise and distractions, the poems of Wendell Berry provide a quiet space for reflection and for reconnecting, if only through memory and imagination, with the natural world.
Any more than that and the writing invariably begins to grow repetitive. Collins, whose best poems generally evoke chuckles, really address an event of that kind of seriousness? For anyone who believes that American verse has become impenetrable, incomprehensible to anyone but degreed specialists, I would say: Poems Knopf , Wright continues his unique poetic quest into his own psyche, giving us verse that can be both breathtakingly beautiful and breathtakingly downbeat—often in the same poem, sometimes in the same line.

Our main character, Marie Commeford, remembers her life growing up Irish Catholic in a Brooklyn tenement. But this is a novel which takes its strength from its precise rendering of the everyday, the quotidian. Spending time with Marie, listening to her remembrances, has the effect of making her very nearly as real as someone we know in our own lives. Here is the opening paragraph of this beautiful novel: Her good spring coat was powder blue; her shoes were black and covered the insteps of her long feet. Her hat was beige with something dark along the crown, a feather or two.
There was a certain asymmetry to her shoulders. She had, always, a bit of black hair along her cheek, straggling to her shoulder, her bun coming undone. Needless to say, Richard and James are soon involved in a series of adventures; amorous, erotic, absurd and downright dangerous, in Kenya and neighbouring parts of Africa. For a start, Richard is tasked to trace a missing Sandhurst scholarship holder who disappeared, apparently in Kenya, during his gap-year. Richard reveals unsuspected talents as an amateur sleuth, and uncovers a strange story. The backdrop changes from sophisticated London to raffish Nairobi, to remote, beautiful up-country Africa.

This volume introduces a new friend, Vernon Scamp, a blunt, cocky Yorkshire Lieutenant. Scamp, who can be outrageous, features in various adventures of his own; usually scandalous or hilarious; frequently both, and always unedifying. James, who is not noted for his self-control, has had a fling with Baron Von Celle, the German owner and chief executive of a private military company PMC , whose East African operation is expanding.
However it is one of his lieutenants, Adrian Lalor, an Irishman, with whom Richard and James have more to do in the event. Adrian, while superficially charming and with a lot of positive qualities, is also a secret terrorist, an IRA supporter, and detests Richard, whom he knows to have served in the SAS.
Richard's Irish past begins to catch up with him.
How he deals with this forms part of the story. For the first time in his life, Richard is faced with an opponent who is as dangerous, devious and committed as he is. Apart from Adrian, Richard, James and Tori have plenty of adventures on the side; some of these being provided, intentionally or not, by the hospitable white Kenyan farmers whom they befriend. Richard displays again his talent for resolving mysteries, first developed in "The Vertical Land.
She also has the benefit of Richard's military advice. She comes away with an extra child, in the person of Sophie, the orphan baby gorilla. Sophie proves to be a handful. Various other sub-plots, including Richard's feud with his politically-correct birth mother's family; Scamp's escapades and the adventures of Richard's godson Jim, who is James Graveney's and Tori's son, keep the book from getting too serious and military.
Their lives are complicated by the arrival of Lord Munster, a young cousin of the Queen, whom Richard has to coach so that he will, by hook or by crook, get into Sandhurst and have a military career. This is a challenging assignment: Munster is a bit of a monster; his reformation was never going to be easy.

Munster has a talent for getting into the newspapers, following unedifying escapades that rival Vernon Scamp's. He has even put a journalist in hospital. His talent for finding wildly unsuitable girlfriends finds spectacular scope in Kenya. Devious Richard as usual has an answer; frequently a very unconventional one, to the various challenges that he faces.
