As other reviewers have noted, this is a book with sub-par reproductions of some of Holbein's more famous pictures.
Since I'd read the reviews and knew this going in, and since I found it for a low price as a used book, I decided to add it to my Tudor-history collection anyway. I'm glad I bought it, but it is not at all what I've come to expect of most Dover publications. I don't understand why they didn't get appropriate permissions and put together a book of quality reproductions. I'd have asked for a refund if I had purchased this book new and for full price.
You can find copies of most of Holbein's work on the internet, and many of them are high-resolution, very clear and worth the trouble of searching them out. If you want to have hard-copies to hand, this book will fill the bill - but find a low-priced copy, as it hasn't much value, to my mind. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. There aren't more of them. For even the least ambitious student of drawing, Holbein is a name to conjure with. His use of line and simple shapes to create powerful likeness with minimal means is unmatched by any of his contemporaries. The elegance and economy of means with which he captures likeness, often using only a few precisely-drawn shapes to create people so real you want to have coffee with them is an act of technique that has baffled and inspired students of drawing for centuries.
If you are learning to draw and copying great masters is part of your training routine, you absolutely cannot go wrong with Holbein. One person found this helpful. For the price, I suppose you get what you pay for, which are a great collection of drawings but terrible reproductions.
I am in awe of Hans Holbein - his portrait drawings are brilliant and subtle - but these reproductions are so dark and muddy I'm not sure how they could be useful either for enjoyment or to learn from, unless you don't have access to the internet. Hervey's identification of the sitters has remained the standard one, affirmed in extended studies of the painting by Foister, Roy, and Wyld , Zwingenberger , and North , who concludes that "the general coherence of the evidence assembled by Hervey is very satisfying"; however, North also notes that, despite Hervey's research, "[R]ival speculation did not stop at once and is still not entirely dead".
However, scholars have argued that this identification of was incorrect. John North, for example, remarks that "[T]his was a natural enough supposition to be made by a person with limited local knowledge, since the two brothers lived on the family estates together at the end of their lives, but it is almost certainly mistaken". North's book analyzes the painting and shows it to be representing Good Friday through various clues on the instruments.

Asparagus has been around a long time. Since the 17th century, it has been highly valued for its culinary and medicinal properties. The only painter I have come across, prior to Manet, who made asparagus a primary subject in his work, is Adriaen Coorte active c. This 17th-century Dutch master, whose work was largely unknown until the s, painted many pictures where asparagus is a very important—or sole—element in the composition.
This was unusual among his peers, not least because asparagus was a luxury item in the 17th century. Many 17th-century European artists painted asparagus in combination with other still life elements.

Isaak Soreau , Basket of Fruit and Vegetables , c. French artist Louise Moillon had a long and successful career as a painter of Naturalist still life. She was noted for her sensitive rendering of plants and her exceptional use of chiaruscuro. Moillon was raised in a family of painters and her father also owned a prominent art gallery on the Left Bank. Her paintings, mostly gouache or tempera on vellum, were collected by the Medicis and other aristocratic families and were highly prized and valued. While covering a lot of bases, the book educates without resorting to copious amounts of pretentious text. The text on each topic is contained within one page and each image is accompanied by three or four carefully chosen points that elaborate on the topic at hand. The first part of the book concerns itself with the history of the garden—the concept of sacred and profane gardens in ancient civilizations; the elaborate gardens of Renaissance popes and princes; the regal gardens of the Baroque; the Enlightenment ideals, which liberated the garden from rigid constructs; and the manifestations of the public garden.
But the section on Monastic gardens truly enlightens on the symbolism of the Medieval quadrant-design and the connection of various plants to the Virgin Mary. The second, and longer, section of Gardens in Art guides the reader through chapters on the various elements of the garden—plants and pruning methods, water, statuary, architectural structures. While the elements themselves have have remained remarkably constant through the ages, their expression has changed, depending on the aesthetic requirements of the day.
