The Organization and Leadership of the First Century Church : A Study
The church was actually born on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon believers. This is recorded in Acts 2: And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting and divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
What an amazing testimony to the power of God. Since those who were witnesses to this event, where each heard these things in their own language, God was saying that the message of salvation was not only for the Jew but for the whole world…for all languages and all nations. Contrary to what many Christians believe, God has never fully excluded the Gentiles who would chose to join themselves to Israel. Rahab the prostitute was no exception Joshua chapters 2, 6. The Gentiles could be joined with Israel if they would obey His laws.
We see this throughout the Old Testament. In the New Testament, the Christians had to meet in homes and often did as Acts 2: And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. One difference about the early church was that they met daily, in most circumstances, and they also ate together. Nothing can make a church draw closer together than having meals together.
This was the custom of the early church…perhaps the first church pot luck ever! Today churches meet in larger facilities and infrequently eat together except on special occasions. The early church was much more evangelistic than the church is today, with exceptions of course. The early church did not tolerate open and unrepentant sinning as some churches do today. The church in the first century chose the leadership similar to the way they do it today and the organizational structure of pastors, deacons, and elders was almost identical to what churches consist of today Acts One of the major differences between the church of today and the beginning of the church was that the early church was much more evangelistic Rom This has not changed much in the church of today although today many churches have communion every week, some once a month, while others have it about once every quarter every 3 months.
Both churches also had similar authoritative structures where members could be disfellowshiped for a time until repentance came about by the sinning member. The Corinthian church is a great example of church discipline. See how Paul handled this in 1 Corinthians 5: And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. An openly sinning and unrepentant believer was put out of the congregation until such a time that they repented. Sin spreads like leaven and so these must be put out of the church for their own sake and for the sake of the purity of the church 1 Cor 5: Many churches today accept unrepentant homosexuals and even ordained, openly homosexual pastors and members. This would have been inconceivable in the early church. The early church also met and broke bread ate together more frequently than the churches today.
Sadly, that first love, that zeal for God, and that evangelistic fever has faded somewhat today, but it is still not too late for revival in the world.

Revival must begin with the Christian and inside the walls of the church. Revival will never spread outwardly unless it begins inwardly. How Did the Early Church Differ From The Church Today?
I have had discussions with my pastor over the last 6 months but realize his theme for the church and mine differ too dramatically to stay. I do not think it is biblical to air our differences before the local body because it can only lead to division, which is wrong, so I am quietly leaving. My main concern, which I believe I mentioned to you before, is that the church in America, as you so well pointed out, does not preach Holiness.
One of the reasons is because, unfortunately, most Christians, in my acquaintance anyway, marginalize those of us trying to live Holy lives, by saying we are either:. Even though the Word commands this. I absolutely Love it!! We are Both at work, because He lives within us. I often have wondered whether the greatest challenge to Western Christianity is from within or without.
I have especially dwelt on this idea this entire past year. I have come to the belief that the greatest threat to the Church today is coming from within the church. The tares are attempting to choke the wheat. The external world has always been opposed to the Church true believers. We expect it to be so.. The danger lies in those inside the church physical, institutional christianity. They are in positions of power guiding policy, changing laws to allow in more and more cases homosexual Pastors, gay marriage, abortion services, etc.
The days of evil being called good and vice verse are upon us Isa 5: They recently had to fire a married staffer because he got a congregant pregnant. I realize that can happen to any church we are all human and can fall but I just wonder about whether things would have been different had their been a repeated very important word call to Holiness and Repentance and a Turning toward Christ on a daily basis. Only the Holy Spirit makes this possible. It is a symbiotic relationship though. We must make the attempt. Daily Bible reading, daily prayer and a daily taking up our Cross and following, following, following.

It is a hospital for sick sinners who are going thru sanctification daily and that this striving for holiness is an ongoing work in progress…not saved by works but striving to live holy lives. I so wish you lived near Wichita, Kansas for we would welcome a biblically sound man of God like you in our church. I pray you find a Bible-believing, Christ-glorifying, cross-centered, church that preaches repentance, forgiveness, and trusting in Christ and devoted to renewing our mind daily. They are out there. I know that they are out there.
That is my prayer that you find one. In fact, the more I have learned about God the more I see just how holy He is and just how unholy I am!

DocReits Keep going strong. Our good works are a result of our faith. I am with you on that. Sometimes they almost make you feel guilty for faithfully doing the lords work. It is a heart issue and can only be remedied by Christ. That undertaking is through the Holy Spirit guided by the preaching of the Law, in order to awaken the conscience heart to understand our depravity and turn from our dead works and believe in Jesus for salvation Ps I am presently reading through Jeremiah and chapter 17 is so great.
Here is what it says about this matter. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, And shall not see when good comes, But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, In a salt land which is not inhabited. I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings. The years following Jesus until the death of the last of the Twelve Apostles is called the Apostolic Age. This age is the foundation upon which the entire church's history is founded. However, there are scholars who dispute the historical reliability of the Acts of the Apostles. Soon after the earthly ministry of Jesus, the Jerusalem church began at Pentecost with apostles and others totalling some Jews and Jewish proselytes , [26] in an "upper room," believed by some to be the Cenacle , and thus "the first Christian church.
Peter baptized the Roman centurion Cornelius , traditionally considered the first Gentile convert to Christianity, in Acts Based on this, the Antioch church was founded. It is also believed that it was there that the term Christian was coined. Disputes over the Law of Moses generated intense controversy in early Christianity. The issue was addressed at the Council of Jerusalem where Paul made an argument that circumcision was not a necessary practice for Gentile believers, vocally supported by Peter, as documented in Acts This position received widespread support and was summarized in a letter circulated in Antioch.
Four years after the Council of Jerusalem, Paul wrote to the Galatians about the issue, which had become a serious controversy in their region. Paul considered it a great threat to his doctrine of salvation through faith and addressed the issue with great detail in Galatians 3 [34]. Although competing forms of Christianity emerged early and persisted into the 5th century , there was broad doctrinal unity within the mainstream churches.
In spite of intermittent intense persecutions, the Christian religion continued its spread throughout the Mediterranean Basin. The sources for the beliefs of the apostolic community include the Gospels and New Testament epistles. The very earliest accounts are contained in these texts, such as early Christian creeds and hymns, as well as accounts of the Passion , the empty tomb , and Post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus ; often these are dated to within a decade or so of the crucifixion of Jesus, originating within the Jerusalem Church.

Although Epiphanius of Salamis reported that the Cenacle survived at least to Hadrian 's visit in , [27] some today think it was rebuilt shortly after this first Jewish war. Earliest Christianity took the form of a Jewish eschatological faith. The Book of Acts reports that the early followers continued daily Temple attendance and traditional Jewish home prayer. Other passages in the New Testament gospels reflect a similar observance of traditional Jewish piety such as fasting , reverence for the Torah and observance of Jewish holy days.
Liturgical services are based on repeating the actions of Jesus "do this in remembrance of me" , using the bread and wine, and saying his words known as the words of the institution. The church has the rest of the liturgical ritual being rooted in the Jewish Passover , Siddur , Seder , and synagogue services, including the singing of hymns especially the Psalms and reading from the Scriptures. The early Christians likely did not have their own copy of Scriptural and other church works. Christianity first spread in the predominantly Greek -speaking eastern half of the Roman Empire , and then extensively throughout the empire by Paul and others. Ecclesiastical historian Henry Hart Milman writes that in much of the first three centuries, even in the Latin-dominated western empire: Their language was Greek, their organization Greek, their writers Greek, their scriptures Greek; and many vestiges and traditions show that their ritual, their Liturgy, was Greek.
In the 2nd century, Melito of Sardis called these Scriptures the " Old Testament " [54] and specified an early canon. The list is written in Koine Greek , Aramaic and Hebrew and dated to around [56]. They held the Jewish scriptures to be authoritative and sacred, employing mostly the Septuagint or Targum translations, later called the Old Testament , a term associated with Supersessionism , and added other texts as the New Testament canon developed. Christianity also continued other Judaic practices: Circumcision was rejected as a requirement at the Council of Jerusalem , c.
Sabbath observance was modified , perhaps as early as Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians An early difficulty arose concerning the matter of Gentile non-Jewish converts as to whether they had to "become Jewish," in following circumcision and dietary laws , as part of becoming Christian. Circumcision was considered repulsive during the period of Hellenization of the Eastern Mediterranean. Around this same time period, Rabbinic Judaism made their circumcision requirement even stricter.
The doctrines of the apostles brought the early Church into conflict with some Jewish religious authorities. Late 1st century developments attributed to the Council of Jamnia eventually led to Christians' expulsion from synagogues. Jewish Christians were among the earliest followers of Jesus and an important part of Judean society during the mid to late 1st century. This movement was centered around Jerusalem and led by James the Just. They held faithfully to the Torah perhaps also Jewish law which was being formalized at the same time , including acceptance of Gentile converts based on a version of the Noachide laws Acts 15 and Acts In Christian circles, " Nazarene " later came to be used as a label for those faithful to Jewish law, in particular for a certain sect.
These Jewish Christians, originally the central group in Christianity, were not at first declared to be unorthodox but were later excluded and denounced. Some Jewish Christian groups, such as the Ebionites , were considered to have unorthodox beliefs, particularly in relation to their views of Christ and Gentile converts. The Nazarenes, holding to orthodoxy except in their adherence to Jewish law, were not deemed heretical until the dominance of orthodoxy in the 4th century.
The Ebionites may have been a splinter group of Nazarenes, with disagreements over Christology and leadership. After the condemnation of the Nazarenes, "Ebionite" was often used as a general pejorative for all related "heresies". Jewish Christians constituted a separate community from the Pauline Christians but maintained a similar faith, differing only in practice. It is believed that there was no direct confrontation or persecution between Gentile and Judaic Christianity. However, by this time the practice of Judeo-Christianity was diluted both by internal schisms and external pressures.
Gentile Christianity remained the sole strand of orthodoxy and imposed itself on the previously Jewish Christian sanctuaries, taking full control of those houses of worship by the end of the 5th century. However, if so then they have lost many of their Jewish traditions because of western influences. These churches are also known as Syrian Christians as they follow the traditions of Syriac Christianity and claim to be descendants of the early converts by Thomas the Apostle. Today, they belong to various denominations of Christianity, but they have kept their unique identity within each of these denominations.
In or around the year 50, the apostles convened the first church council , known as the Council of Jerusalem , to reconcile practical and by implication doctrinal differences concerning the Gentile mission. At the Council of Jerusalem it was agreed that Gentiles could be accepted as Christians without full adherence to the Mosaic Laws , possibly a major break between Christianity and Judaism the first being the Rejection of Jesus [3] , though the decree of the council Acts The Council, according to Acts 15 , determined that circumcision was not required for new gentile converts, only to abstain from "food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.
There was a slowly growing chasm between Christians and Jews, rather than a sudden split. Even though it is commonly thought that Paul established a Gentile church, it took centuries for a complete break to manifest.
