I think music frees the heart by bypassing the intellect and reaching a place of pure emotion. So often we feel constricted because we spend so much time overthinking everything. Music gives us a chance to let go of this and relax into our true nature. What is the connection between music and spirituality and how did you find yourself on this journey?
Music is a wonderful conduit for expressing love toward the divine, whatever that version is. I have always found myself attracted to this particular conduit, in fact much more so than actual religions or philosophies themselves. Chanting and singing for peace changes both the person making the music as well as those listening. We can only change the world by changing ourselves, and the practice of chanting with the intention of peace does just that. What happens when you sing your mantras? Most of the best lovemaking in my life has been through sound, ha ha! It is a language unto itself, a way to express love more intimately than often words can do.
We will be singing, playing and celebrating our beautiful and fragile existence on Earth. We will be playing songs in English, Sanskrit, Spanish, Hebrew and whatever other way we can think of to make love with the divine spirit in all of us! Can we actually sing for peace?
Does chanting for peace actually change anything? Yes, of course we can actually sing for peace! It is happening right now, all over the planet, at all times. In his trusty VW T25 camper van named Pickle,. These socks still exist. Just existing in another dimension. Our socks have become interdimensional time travellers. And what do you wear while making that small step?
What if our socks were time travelling without us? String Theory provides the answer. String Theory suggests they are one-dimensional strings propagating through space. In string theory we have up to ten dimensions. These universes co-exist somewhere along the string, perhaps a moment behind, or. So the question posed in multi-dimensional sock time is: S being for Sock I think. This is where two seemingly different physical systems turn out to be equivalent in a non-trivial way.
Socks are the manifestation of duality. They come in twos. Even a one-legged man must purchase two socks before he wears just one. I have written to Dr Brian Greene, the world-renowned particle physicist and cosmologist who is striving to solve the most pertinent riddle of our time: The lost-sock phenomenon could in fact be the clue. Wildest Dreams is about the students being able to re-create either wonderful or frightening events that have happened in their dreams. Monheit purrs and insinuates the vocal, bending her tones expressively and broadly, throwing around vocal color and shifts in timbre. The harmonies beneath the melody are both simplified and altered a bit, turning sour in a few places. Particularly the music, which throbs and carries some mystery, actually reflects the words and the title.
She sounds like she does have you under her skin. Not that Monheit is always vinegary here. Small quibbles aside, most of the vocal performances here are supremely controlled and musical. On most of the tracks on Songbook , Monheit is schooling the typical jazz singer on how to achieve maximum expressiveness.
Rather, Payton and Monheit have shuffled together classic tunes, a pair of great voices Jane and Nicholas, featured on most every track , and a post-modern willingness to embrace old and new in a hip blend. Barry Jenkins' If Beale Street Could Talk is a thought-provoking tale of both love and injustice, and in working with Moonlight composer Nicholas Brittell, the two find compelling musical motifs from unexpected places.
