I live in Malaysia, so Thailand trips are frequent and very cheap. I usually avoid Bangkok as it's dirtier than Kuala Lumpur, and too busy for my liking. Oh the glorious food.
You forgot to mention Tom Yum. Get pork in it, instead of the traditional seafood. You've to ask, but it can be done. Oh and sticky mango rice with coconut milk for desert. I'm so addicted to the stuff! So glad it's just a 2 hour flight for me! Alcohol is also very cheap. Bangkok is definitely busy! Tom Yum is super delicious, I have a recipe for it here on the site! I'm jealous that you're so close! I will be heading to thailand in a week and will be staying at the Park Plaza Sukhumvit as well!
Any local restaurants or coffee shops you would recommend close by? We will be spending most of our time up in Chiang Mai, but still trying to make plans for the two days we will spend in Bangkok: You're going to love the Park Plaza. I seriously cannot remember the name of a single restaurant we ate at while we were there. When we travel, we typically ask the hotel staff for recommendations, or just walk around and find somewhere that is filled with locals.
If the locals are eating there, you know it has to be good! I do remember there was one place we ate that was just around the corner from Park Plaza.. The food was great, and so inexpensive it was ridiculous.

This is actually really great because we're planning a trip to Thailand from Feb-March or so.. Definitely a big help, we are saving this to our notes. Thank you for the great tips! I'm moving to Bangkok this month to live there for 3 years! I will keep in mind all the great advices! Going to Thailand in a week, any suggestions for around the Landmark Hotel?
Also how cheap are the taxis? I'm not sure where the Landmark Hotel is, so I wouldn't be able to suggest any nearby attractions. The taxis are much cheaper than they are here in The States, but the tuk-tuks are even less expensive. I love posts like this. I can't afford to travel much, so I make do with all these juicy little tidbits from people's blogs. I am inevitably fascinated by and repelled by the Asian attitude towards restrooms - it seems completely bizarre to me that they would prefer such nasty conditions.
The zoo was fascinating though. Look how close they are to the elephants. Very accurate, only I would advise against riding in a tuk - tuk any time of the day- it's dangerous and accidents happen frequently. Also, Thais are friendly when approached by tourists for help or advice, but they tend to keep to themselves and are rather shy. If a local approaches you in the street out of the blue and starts being all friendly with you, he's probably trying to scam you.
I'm all the more excited for when I go in July, my first time travelling properly. Thailand is a charming country and there is always something new to discover. Hi I'm Thai and I found this on interest then I read it. It is so true. If anyone want some suggestion about Thailand, you can e-mail me. Tell me the interesting places, shopping malls located closer to Khlong Luang. Also let me know the things a tourist could buy from Thailand. Near popular tourist attractions. Okay, next time I go to Thailand I'll drink a beer at the zoo.
After my 6 massages a day. Thanks for coming up with something unique. Gotta love Thailand - and I'm really glad Thai food in Thailand doesn't taste like Thai food at home. For some reason they have to add sugar to every stupid dish in American Thai restaurants. I've asked if there is anything without sugar.
The answer is generally 'no. Hi Anetta, I found your post via Pinterest and love it. I travel to Thailand in March and want to stay for one night or two in a five-star hotel. Can you recommend one outside of Bangkok? Greetings from Berlin Patricia. That looks really beautiful! This is a great post. I love all your advice for people who never been to Thailand. But since I am Thai, I do not agree or disagree about talking about the King. We can talk about the King, but we Thai people sometimes find it not appropriate to have conversations about our King with the outsiders, especially those who ask in a crude way.

And it also depends on persons whether they want to talk about it or not, because everybody has different point of views. But trust me, it is okay to talk about the King. Just start the conversation with a question like, "Do you mind if I ask some questions about the King? I just want to know the King better. I wanna know why Thai people love and respect him so mush. I personally would talk about the King I meant in a good way , so people would understand our King better and in a good way. I would have a talk to make you or any foreigners to know the King better. One tip that would help a lot about this topic is for you to find some information about the King first.
That was a long comment, but yeah. I hope you don't mind. To make it easier to understand. It is considered to be disrespect to him. Also, it is because it's illegal to criticize the King. If you are caught, you can be put in jail for that.

Hi my friend as you want to call it In my experience, Thai people are very welcoming and friendly. They don't call it the land of smiles for nothin'! First of all, Thailand sounds incredible! You combine two of my favorite things Which recipe should I try first?! Oooh, that's a toughy! I'd say, my Mulligatawny Soup.

It's one of my all-time-favorites: I am scheduled to be in Thailand in a month, just awaiting for my passport and I'm off, your blog is excellent. Thank you for your fantastic advice! My fiancee and I are planning on traveling to Thailand in September for our honeymoon: We're struggling on deciding whether we should just travel to Bangkok and Phuket or shortening our time in Phuket and traveling to Chiang Mai. What do you recommend? Would you recommend flying between the places?
We didn't have time to go to Phuket or head North while we were there - we spent time in Bangkok and Hua Hin. If you're short on time, flying might be a good idea, but that will add to your budget. The train system in Thailand can be a bit temperamental - we took a "2 hour" train ride down to Hua Hin from Bangkok that took us close to 5 hours. I'd recommend checking out seat Im going with my wife and kids for 2 months. I been there 3 times last year and feel in love with it. I found just renting a car and drive off is the best bet south north doesn't matter. But I'm a fan of hua Hun , Tak fa as well but I just love driving and finding these little city and sitting down with the people and just taken it all in.
You just have to find a place to stay before night fall. Super helpful tips - Thailand is high on my list of places to travel! Did you check out any yoga while you were there? Also very surprised to read about croissants - a personal fave! Haha, I always wondered too about that 'no touching heads' rule - who does that anyhow?? It's not that you walk around in any other given country padding people on the head, except maybe small children.
What is the deal with kids - is that okay or would parents get offended? I can see how it would happen from time to time As far as kids go, I'd be really careful. In some of the countries I've traveled to it's illegal to take pictures of children! I'm heading to Phuket in 3 weeks for 10 days. Thanks for the great posts. As excited as I am, I am still trying to understand the currency. I'm traveling with a group and we'll be mostly sailing as well as checking out the culture. I'll definintely look into having a massage and perhaps taking a cooking class.
Just a little bit to add: And hey, there are so many pretty girls especially in Bangkok. Of course we are not all ladyboys! P However, these days, I even have a hard time to sometimes identify them. What clothes should i bring with me? Any tips how to come to the Nord as cheapest as possible and fast?
Generally speaking, Thailand is a safe place to go. Based on our years of experience of traveling all over the world, we would never leave home without travel insurance. We recommend going with World Nomads. The most common accident in Thailand has to be scooter or moped-related. In the Thai Islands, English is a lot more common as a lot of people are in the tourism industry.

To help you out, here are a few basic Thai phrases and words that are useful for traveling. While we usually prefer to travel around countries during the shoulder seasons, we tend to also plan our trips around certain celebrations and festivals that we want to experience. In Thailand, Loi Krathong and Songkran are two festivals in Thailand that we highly recommend people to experience at least once.

Imagine looking up at the sky as thousands of paper lanterns are set free in the sky and trust me when I say that seeing it in person is truly a magical experience. The transport from one place to the next is fairly easy in Thailand and is quite efficient. We recommend downloading the Skyscanner App and using the 12Go website to view bus, boat, and train schedules ahead of time. In a nutshell, the weather in Thailand can be broken down into three parts: As in every country, you can travel around for as cheap or as expensive as you want.
With that in mind, make sure you bring lots of cool quick dry clothing and well as a scarf or two for visiting temples and other religious sites. Check out our complete guide on what to pack for Thailand.

Animal Tourism in Thailand is pretty rampant with lots of tours promoting elephant trekking. If there is one thing we are passionate about, it is about spreading the word about the rampant animal abuse that happens in these establishments. A lot of tourists flock to the Tiger temple in Chiang Mai just to get a selfie with a tiger. The tigers in these places are often mistreated and drugged up so they can be docile enough for human interaction. As mentioned, Thailand is a country that has a little bit of everything for everyone.
Despite being frequented by millions and millions of tourists every day, there is still a large portion of Thailand that remains largely unexplored. Here are a few of the best places things to do in Thailand. This busy metropolitan city is the heart of Thailand and is one of the most chaotic, energetic, and vibrant cities in Southeast Asia. While some people head straight to the islands, spending a few days in Bangkok is a great way to ease yourself into this exotic country.
