Biblical Advice for the Husband and Wife

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church,. The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives,.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. To be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. So they are no longer two but one flesh.

What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. As Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.

Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity. Honor widows who are truly widows. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God. She who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day, Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. And God blessed them.
