I did not want the story to end. It follows the path of a family as they go through their lives and grow their families and their businesses. The one thing that binds them together through all the centuries is a white vase with a blue dragon swirling around it. Ironically, no one seems to worry about how much it is worth through the centuries.
It is a sentimental vase that is passed down through the family along with a family tree. It finally lands in the possession of Miranda Sharp. Miranda is a divorced mother raising her daughter, Georgia on a very small salary. She manages to make ends meet; but it is difficult. However, she and Georgie get along well. Miranda had received a box of items from her Aunt Celia as her inheritance. Her aunt thought she would appreciate them for their sentimental value more than actual value.
Thinking nothing of the items, she put them on her shelves and went on with her life. The vase was a catchall in the hall and she kept flowers in it occasionally. It nearly fell every time Georgie put her coat on the rack; but it never did.
The novel follows both families in their own time periods until time intersects. The story is delightful and well-told. It is definitely a novel to read and cherish.
This is a marvelous history of a piece of Ming porcelain and the the families who cared for it for many years. The author must have done a generous amount of research in order to capture the customs and times of which she wrote.
The Silk Weaver's Daughter by Elizabeth Kales
There was much information about Venice and other places that the traders frequented as well as the process for producing the porcelain pieces. With the original character being a real historical figure, she invented generations who followed and cared for the vase. A Ming vase, originally created for and painted by a Chinese emperor, is given to a Venetian trader, who was an actual historical character, and passed down through generations of his family.
Juxtaposed throughout the narrative is the story of a modern-day woman who received the vase, as well as how exquisite porcelain was created in the Far East. Although the vase was passed from mother to daughter, the modern-day owner - who has no idea of its value - received it through the will of an aunt who had married into the bloodline.
Among the mother-daughter pairs, some thought it brought good luck, some were not so sure. I greatly enjoyed the historical aspects of the novel, as well as descriptions of life and architecture in major European cities throughout the ages. The modern-day heroine has to unravel the machinations of high-powered auction houses and an unscrupulous suitor.
Not a fabulous book, but worth the read. Those who enjoyed the story of "The Red Violin" will probably enjoy this as well. One person found this helpful. A interesting storyline of early traders, their voyages and their wares. The history of the families of these traders and their lives was very interesting and what a large part their porcelain wares played in their lives.
The myths that clung to this exquisite making vase from generation to generation was amazing. Beautifully written and all the more interesting because of authentic people and places. I thought the end a little abrupt and it was a bit too wordy in places.
I really enjoyed the book. It was unique in its plot and storyline: The story moves back and forth as its history and those who possessed the vase are described. To reveal much more of the plot would be to ruin it for potential readers, so I'll leave it with that brief summary.
The author Debbie Rix notes at the book's end that the story is somewhat based at its origins upon characters who actually existed. Between the sections she explains the process by which ceramics were created in Ming dynasty China, so the book is enlightening as well as entertaining. From a modern day story of a rogue and an art theft, this fascinating story shifts back through the centuries to the creation of a beautiful and priceless Ming vase.
The fortunes of the westerner trader and his descendants who became the custodians of the vase is traced through Italy, Holland and England. Fast paced and yet packed with historical details. This book has a lot of historical info, along with pottery making which I found very interesting.
I got lost with characters a few times because there are many. But 5 stars for the beautifully written brought-to-life Daughters of the Silk Road. Just finished this book this weekend. I enjoyed how the author went back from the 's and beyond to the present. Really liked the past characters and the story about them. I had pretty much figured out the plot about the vase in modern times, but still very much enjoyed how the author brought it to fruition.

I particularly loved the story set in the past and how many real life characters in the silk trade were placed alongside the fictional ones. Seamlessly written and researched. Rix weaves magic and more. The locations are lusciously Italian and the story twists and turns like the ragged mountain roads past the calm flowing lakes to the bustling city of Venice and beyond.
