The Quiet Revolution: The Emergence of Interfaith Consciousness

The East has had plenty of practice recognizing the equality and legitimacy of different traditions. Traditions common in the Western world however are often mutually exclusive, each claiming possession of ultimate truth. However, it is a long way from pluralism to syncretism.

I hope to explore the relationship between pluralism and syncretism at a later time. But none the less, pluralism is sometimes seen as a threat in those traditions where superiority is part of their belief system. Regardless, the pluralist effort needs to be universal.

Given the qualities of the Eastern traditions, it may very well be the East that leads the world in this effort. Given the qualities of Western traditions, our effort to break structures of thought to make room for a more dynamic way of life must be fervent and constant. Cincinnati Interview in, The Quiet Revolution: The emergence of interfaith consciousness , by P. Another point scholars still debate on, and leaves religious leaders wondering, is the nature of secularism.

What started the ideology and what continues to drive it to such prominence in the Western world?

Secularism as we know it is still a far cry from the initial concept of freedom of religion, but I believe the seeds were planted here. By removing religion from the official list of offences, people started to get acclimatized to such separation, as superficial as it may be. With better means of travel and communication this separation became more necessary as the global village began to form.

But now we see that secularism is much more than separation of church and state. It is now clear that there is a relationship between the level of separation and the amount of religiosity present in a society. The other side of the argument of course being that a decline of religious people causes a decline in the collective significance attributed by society. I tend to agree with Bruce based on the religious fervor and spiritual dedication I have witnessed in secular, Western society. If individuals held the power, I think religion would be more evident in the public sphere and encouraged.

But as it remains now society has agreed it is better if religion remains a private matter. Thus, as it is kept behind closed doors, religion is not encouraged and a less religious and thoroughly secular life is.

RECENT ARRIVALS

Secular Humanism has emerged as the politically correct system of belief. Secularism may have got its start with official, societal sanctions but I believe both society and the individual are factors. They work in a cycle. One shapes the other to reflect and reinforce secular principles, and so the wheel turns. But I feel tolerance has become a buzz word that is perhaps used inappropriately. I tolerate long lines at the bank, annoying people on public transport, advertisements and crying children.

Tolerance does not require or encourage respect or empathy; which are perhaps the two most vital elements in a heterogeneous society. In that silence, issues compound and hatred can run unchecked.

Since the civil rights movement, Americans have witnessed how racism can continue implicitly. There are laws and policies in place to prevent discrimination and racial slurs are largely unacceptable in mainstream society. And yet, it continues. More recently, we have seen Islamophobia take hold in the same way since the attacks on September 11th, Tolerance is only the beginning of a peaceful community.
