Good stuff, worth rereading. This book was published in and collected 14 of Pritchett's previously published short stories. It appears that the pieces were published between the late s and the early s, at least nine of them in the New Yorker.

For me, a few of the stories were interesting for their atmosphere and background: And for the author's attention to markers of social class, in such things as how characters were expected to behave at a club or a social dinner and how a character spoke to her dressmaker, who was also her sister.

Most of the pieces, though, were not interesting for their characters, dialogue, humor or development, and some went on and on, to no discernible point. In my opinion, a number of them suffered in comparison with the best writing of, say, William Trevor or John O'Hara. The three stories I enjoyed the most were "The Diver," a narrator's memory of his youth spent in Paris, when he began to learn the power of story-telling and had his first sexual experience, with a local woman.

It balanced humor, memorable images, and an interesting character, though the woman was seen only briefly, from the outside, and left unexplained. This story developed, had interesting characters and a clear point, and contained the author's fullest description of the point of view of a woman.

And "The Wheelbarrow," about a woman who returned home after 25 years to clean out the home where she'd grown up, entering the "dark mine of the past. Get to Know Us.
