Extinction: Book 5

I was lucky enough to get an Advanced Reading Copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. But I have bought my own copies of all this author's books. I want to support his writing career in my own small way. Apr 24, Michael Hicks rated it it was amazing Shelves: Somehow, though, Nicholas Sansbury Smith has managed to keep this series rocking and rolling, presenting a cross-genre affair that continues to impress and excite.

The elements involved in crafting an Extinction book work wonderfully well, and Smith ties up action, science, horror, and military thriller into a tight, impossible to put down read. Here, Team Ghost, led as always by Reed Beckham, are making their last-ditch push toward ending the threat of the monstrous Variants, whose offspring have evolved some particularly nasty new elements that allow Smith to craft several wonderfully gruesome scenes.

And if it is, in fact, the last book, rest assured that Smith is not resting on his laurels here. Smith gets full-on cinematic in his epicness here. Kate Lovato, and the other members of Team Ghost. Mar 01, Yvonne rated it liked it. Well, I was hoping for something different, but it was more of the same. That's not bad, but with this being the last book of the series I was looking for a bigger, more hopeful ending.

I may have reached my zombie limit.

Jul 17, BookLoversLife rated it it was amazing. I have started this review many times but wasn't able to formulate the words that I wanted to say, not because this was bad, but because it was exceptional and the words I wanted to say weren't enough. This book, and indeed the whole series, has been phenomenal.

So Kate, Meg, Tasha, Jenny and a few other islanders were taken by the variants and their collaborators back to the lair of the Bone Collector. Beckham and team Ghost well what's left of them anyway immediately set out on a rescue miss I have started this review many times but wasn't able to formulate the words that I wanted to say, not because this was bad, but because it was exceptional and the words I wanted to say weren't enough.

Beckham and team Ghost well what's left of them anyway immediately set out on a rescue mission. It might just be their toughest fight yet because the girls are in danger. Meanwhile, there is dissension in the ranks, with someone wanting to send a nuclear bomb to wipe out the variants, even with men still in the field, but the president denying the request. The culprit isn't happy though and a mutiny is about to take place. Davis and a handful of hurt marines stop it in time? This is just a drop in the bucket of what happens in this book!! As with each book, the action is non stop, and I mean non stop.

Every page is chock full of it and it's hard to take a breath because you know something is about to happen!! I didn't just read this I devoured it as I couldn't put it down!! The author isn't afraid to take risks either.

In every book characters die, but he also kills off some prominent ones, and I was afraid to find out who was killed here!!! There are deaths, some of them painful ones, and no-one is left unscathed. My heart was in my mouth so many times with this and I was in tears a lot too, but it all added up to a simply amazing book. These characters have become some of my favourite and even though this was supposed to be the end, I'm so glad the author decided to write 2 more.

This would have been a satisfying ending to Beckham's tale, but there were a lot of unanswered questions and I'm delighted we get to see some of Team Ghost go to Europe and take back the world!! I don't know what else to say about this Extinction End was stunning, stupendous, amazing, exceptional and extraordinary!!

Brilliantly written and developed, it's a must read for everyone! To me, Bronson Pinchot is Beckham and Horn and all the other amazing characters!! He nailed the performance and gave every character their own tones and voices. He captured the very essence of the book perfectly and drew me in with his inflections. This latest edition to the Extinction Cycle starts off at a blistering pace and keeps it up to the very end. This book has it all action, thrills, horror, suspense, heartbreak, hope, desperation, friendship and love. These are all mixed together to deliver a perfect story that has depth of both character and narrative. Be warned though if you love your nails then DO NOT read this book as the suspense to be found in these pages will find you chewing them away without even noticing. I have been fortunate to have followed the journey this young author has taken over the last few years. From his first offering to this latest one he goes from strength to strength…Ok I will stop banging on about him now and leave it up to you to see if you agree.

I can't begin to tell you all how much I love this series. It's pretty much perfect military post-apocalyptic horror. I was worried the author wouldn't be able to end it well enough to match the ultra-quality of the previous four books, but I was wrong. Do not miss out on this series. Mar 06, Aletia rated it it was amazing. The end does not come swift, or silently I expected the end to come sooner than it did.

Just like he does, you think things are going along fine, and then BAM, let's have a little more action. I am mostly happy with the ending. Hopefully there will be another story, showing us this new world. Jul 05, Soo rated it liked it Shelves: I really like how Smith makes you think that everything is totally freaking awful and yet it doesn't turn out that way every time. The way he weaves in hope is great. There are definite themes that recur within the plot and characters. I'm okay with that.

Extinction End

It shows how similar events can be despite happening at different times and with different people. Just when I thought the rest of the original crew would be lost, I felt gleeful to hear about how they Mini-Review: Just when I thought the rest of the original crew would be lost, I felt gleeful to hear about how they managed to stay alive.

There's a lot of information about the Variants and the effects of the massive destruction on the people, places and things. It makes the story close to home. I could end the series here and not feel bad. That's what the author intended. Since I have in a trilogy set, I will keep going into the next book.

That one will decide if I want to grab book 7. If you like great core characters, action and the survival of the human race among monsters, you will enjoy this series. Feb 02, Jenny Jo Weir rated it it was amazing Shelves: Heck to the yeah! Nicholas does it again. This man does not disappoint. I am unable to convey the awesomeness of these books.

If you want action, suspense and great characters, read this series!!! Nov 08, Kate rated it it was amazing. Seven weeks into the end of the world, and the action is still going strong!!! This series is really epic-all the books are smashing! Nov 01, Anita rated it it was amazing. Actually found Nicholas's Extinction series by accident as I was browsing sci-fi titles.

All of his books have you on the edge of your seat as his characters come to life, battling freaky monsters or humans turned traitor, trying to save the world. I'm from the generation who loved Lassie and Rin Tin Actually found Nicholas's Extinction series by accident as I was browsing sci-fi titles. I'm from the generation who loved Lassie and Rin Tin Tin. Those dogs were heroes and Apollo follows in their footsteps as one of the bravest canines ever! The Extinction series, as well as his other books, is a must read for anyone who loves sci-fi or apocalyptic genres.

You won't be disappointed. Was in that terribly good place where you're reading quickly to see how it ends, but forcing yourself to slow because you don't want it to. Very much looking forward to see where Book 6 takes me. Full review to come. May 24, Melissa Levine rated it it was amazing Shelves: I could have seen the series end here. There's a part when everyone is out in the streets, the good guys are shooting at the Varients, while the civilians cower in fear essentially. Reed ends up spotting Kate, and Jenny spots her father.

Now I don't know I could have seen the series end here. Unless she was randomly laying on the ground After injecting the young Variant, Ellis ends up wiping "salt water" from his forehead. Now, he hadn't just come from the beach, so why not just say he wiped sweat? I might be the only one here, but I felt like Thomas was a very minor character. Yet, there seemed to be a good amount of references more than what you'd think for this type of character from other characters about his death. They're both main characters who are about to say their final words, important ones, yet they die before they get the words completely out.

Was it dark already when the gang arrived at the place where they thought they saw white wolves forgot the name of it while flying overhead? I was under the impression that they were flying there during the day, but when they find the Variant claw, it's nighttime because the moon is out, yet it's only been a short while. Why would the humans help the Variants? I can't figure that out. Yes, they wouldn't be killed hopefully , but they wouldn't really have a life either. I wish more rewards would have been given at the end of this book. At least to the dog!

In the end, this was another great story to add to the series.

I think book 4 is my favorite so far though. As previously stated in book 4's review, I feel like I've grown used to the way the narrator narrates, if that makes sense. When I started book 1, there was something off about his narrating.

The Extinction Cycle Series

By the end of book 3 having listened straight through , I felt he was doing a great job. Pausing for several weeks, I then began listening to book 4 and that 'something off' feeling came back. But again, going straight to book 5, I feel like he's doing a pretty good job. For example, when an action scene arrives, he'll talk faster and it adds to the overall anxiety, tension kind of feeling. I guess I'm still on the fence for this narrator. On to book 6. Feb 19, Banshee rated it it was ok Shelves: This novel follows Team Ghost as they rescue the Plum Island survivors from the Variants and the final military attack against the Variants and the Juveniles.

Team Ghost is sent to Washington and one of the highest concentration of enemies. The This novel follows Team Ghost as they rescue the Plum Island survivors from the Variants and the final military attack against the Variants and the Juveniles. The characters are okay but Kate was such a stereotype. She is being hauled away by an enemy that eats people and she is worried about her baby and what the damage the jostling may be doing to it. What would the point of that be if they need human bodies to eat?

And there was so much American is Great that I really started to get annoyed. Here are a few examples: In my opinion book 3 is where the series started to get silly and book 4 and 5 were some of the worst. This is my third time reading the series. Jan 10, Gabe Detweiler rated it it was amazing. When i was reading this book it made me feel as if I was there in the moment. Beckingham has no choice but to leave part of his team and return to base before fuel runs out. At the end of the book Fitz is promoted to team leader and embarks on a military campaign the liberate Europe from the variants. Dec 21, Erik Dabel rated it it was ok. Book 5 of the series. Interesting twist on the popular subject, bringing some science into the zombie apocalypse genre. I've already read the second book, and have just started the third. These books are a quick and entertaining read, and would probably make a great movie series. I'd give it 4 stars, but at times it reads like a video game with a good plot but lacking in quality dialogue, and at other times it seems like a military fans but not an actual mi Book 5 of the series. I'd give it 4 stars, but at times it reads like a video game with a good plot but lacking in quality dialogue, and at other times it seems like a military fans but not an actual military members wet dream, complete with the "world needs more heroes like this" mixes with the most cliche, cheesy dialogue possible.

But still, they are well worth the read. I could not wait to read the final conclusion of the Extinction Cycle series. I loved Extinction End! The author's storytelling keeps on getting better and better. Rather than get burdened down by blow by blow military maneuvers which I don't enjoy or science that tries to explain things to the nth degree, the author has created a very enjoyable, fictional world that revolves around the characters and their struggles with a man made virus that has mutated humans into something nightmarish.

I was kept on the edge of my recliner going through ups and downs, smiles and laughs and sniffles and sadness. As the battle between Variants and their offspring and Team Ghost intensifies and comes to a conclusion, we lose some of our heroes and find budding romance between others. There were several scenes that really got to me on an emotional level. We see the good in people who are desperate give their all to ensure the survival of the human race and the bad in desperate people who lack faith in others. There were times I wanted to jump into the story and strangle some people!

As I got closer and closer to the end I kept wanting it to go on and on. But this story must come to an end unfortunately. The conclusion and epilogue were wonderfully written and unlike other series I've read, did justice to the characters we've come to love. I, for one, would love to see the Extinction Cycle made into a movie.

It's fun to imagine who I'd pick as actors for the characters. I have it all planned out!!! I wholeheartedly recommend the Extinction Cycle series to anyone that loves the zombie, post apocalyptic genre! Completely perfect ending to this incredible series. I agree with many other reviewers that NSS really needs to try and shop this around to see if anyone would go for adapting it to a screenplay for a movie. I read a lot of these book series and very often find myself going satisfied to unsatisfied to Many lack the consistency of storyline and character discipline that NSS has with this series.

Extinction End by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

I am sad to see it end but it was done in the right way. Absolutely an outstanding end to a super series. Can't say enough about this book. A lot of author's will take liberties in the final chapter or final book to turn everything that went previously on its head. Nicholas Sansbury Smith held true to his characters and delivered a fantastic ending filled with honor and respect to the men and women who fight and die for this country.

Book 5 marks the exciting conclusion to one of the best post-apocalyptic series out there. Once again,we are treated to an exciting mix of action and horror framed against a scientific plausible backdrop. I wasn't quite sure how Smith would wrap up this saga but he does it with skill, passion and deep emotion. Suspense and action galore. I can only hope there will be a spin-off in the future. If Amazon had 10 stars out of five, I would use that rating. I can't begin to tell you all how much I love this series.

It's pretty much perfect military post-apocalyptic horror. I was worried the author wouldn't be able to end it well enough to match the ultra-quality of the previous four books, but I was wrong. Do not miss out on this series.

When I purchased this last book I realized that I had forgotten exactly what had happened in the other four so I proceeded to read them all again and I'm glad that I did. I truly cared about all of the characters. I was right there fighting with all of them. I cried when we lost a team member, way too many, and cheered whenever we took down one of those bastard variants. The characters were believable as was the dialogue. I just loved everything about all of these books.

This is an author who's books I will never hesitate to purchase and will read everything he writes because I have faith that it will be good. Keep up the good work. Now on to the next series. What a great story! This is the last book in the series, and in it the story lines are all tied neatly together. As the author himself said, this book gives the characters a resolution.

As I stated in a previous post, post-apocalyptic stories are a favorite of mine. It always feels like their should be more but this series has an honest-to-God ending! As in the other books in this series, the plot and characters are well-developed, there is plenty of action, and the author keeps the pages turning. This is one of the most well-written books that I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
