Da Nang Postscripts
Gaulman crafts the diary into an account of drinking, whoring, and pot smoking that relentlessly repeats itself day after day; an onomatopoeic approach that realistically conveys the overriding tedium, desperation, and existential ennui. This endless party is only occasionally punctuated by moments of extreme dread in which fellow soldiers die in his arms and his own death is avoided by inches. These men, whose psyche has obviously been irreparably damaged, admit to him they have murdered villagers or their own lieutenants. Gaulman is a master of description.
Family, friends, even chance acquaintances are described in minute detail. He had a lean, slightly hunched, six-foot frame. His kind brown eyes were set in a chestnut colored face, and he had big oblong ears that stuck out from the sides of his hook-shaped head. Another intriguing aspect is an almost complete lack of racism, another departure from standard Vietnam narrative. With few exceptions, black and white soldiers interact smoothly in their pursuit of the perfect high. An excellent, thought-provoking read perfect for history buffs and anyone who lived through that era, though some may find the realistic journal style too repetitive.
Jun 15, Karen rated it liked it. It's been taking me longer to read lately- all books, not just this one. The ending was poignant, however, and the postscript reminds me that it was the war in Vietnam, and thankfully the young man made it home alive and relatively unmarred by the war in comparison to other Vietnam war vets, that is. If you read it, take your time if you must. The end is, in my opinion, well worth it. Thank you Goodreads for sending me this book. It also deals with how many of the men dealt with these hardships.
