Maurice Grosse, a successful inventor-turned paranormal investigator, was called in to record the noises and placed a tape recorder mic in the girls' bedroom while Morris rigged up a camera so he could trigger it every time a bump was picked up. When the film was developed, Janet was framed in freakish mid-air poses that gave the levitation extra currency although Morris stresses that he wasn't present in the room when the shutter captured the startling images.
The poltergeist dossier bulged to include 2, inexplicable incidents and the witnesses, such as the local lollipop lady's testimony of seeing Janet levitating through her bedroom window, boosted its credibility. Janet suffered violent trances and once claimed a curtain had wrapped around her neck during a levitation, before her mother wrestled her free and saved her life. Grosse almost became a fixture at the house and eventually developed a connection with the poltergeist, encouraging it first to speak in a threatening, raspy voice and then to respond to questions and finally reveal itself as the spirit of year-old Bill Wilkins, a former resident who had died at the house.

Grosse, a member of the Society for Psychical Research, had built a successful business before turning to psychic studies after his year-old daughter Janet died in a motorbike accident. His son Richard, a London-based lawyer, tells The Reunion that his father, who died aged 87 in , was a diligent investigator who ruled out all the potential trickery techniques that could have caused the noises and voices.
It drove him to the society and to this event and 28 years of research but it is inconceivable that he would allow the loss of my sister to colour anything in this case. Richard, who accompanied his father to the house on several visits, adds: He was very concerned about what was happening to Janet. His investigative work was followed by a procession of celebrities, including the ventriloquist Ray Allen, who was brought in to see if either of the girls could have been producing the voices that filled up hours of tapes.

I haven't got any closer to working out what it is but I think it is something scientific and not spooky. Janet and sister Margaret - who did admit egging on the researchers a bit during their time in the spotlight - now have families of their own but insist they were telling the truth. They declined to take part in the programme but Janet has commented: How would they feel if it happened to them and they were called a fake? The poltergeist entered a world of silence in as interest faded and there have been no reports of further activity, allowing the story to fall into urban folklore.
Ghost of Green Street: Stars relive agony of family terrorised by poltergeist in new drama TV round-up: Enfield Haunting, All Aboard! This is just as good as the Amityville horror. Mr Spall must have been given a big payout. The levitation in Enfield, was just Janet, leaping from her bed. It is sad that people buy into this nonsense. There are drugs that a doctor can give you to help. Mr Spall gives a good performance, as he is a talented actor. But one wonders why he does crap like this. If you believe pixies live in the armpits of kangaroos, then maybe this is for you.
Because there is as much evidence of pixies living in the armpits of kangaroos as there is for this tripe. Explore popular and recently added TV series available to stream now with Prime Video.
