As morning breaks over a cold Scottish city, a diverse ensemble of residents go about their daily business, unaware of events that will converge with lethal effect. A master of suspense, Andrew Taylor takes us back to and a boy's school located in the gloomy Fens of East Anglia. Chilling, and masterfully composed, this is not a story to be read after dark.

The James Bond we know and mostly love comes as much from the movies as from the books by Ian Fleming. Len Deighton, author of the classic spy thriller, The Ipcress File, was a friend of Ian Fleming, but he was also close to the man who was to become Fleming's legal nemesis - Kevin McClory, a veteran of the British film industry. The history of Bond's development becomes, in Deighton's expert hands, a tale of inflated egos and poisonous vendettas, which involves many household names. Time Out Missing collection. I am in a sort of a loss of words here to describe this tight and enthralling piece. In a nutshell, Dean Koontz's Wilderness is a short story that is well written with a gripping plot, awesome characterization, beautiful dialogue and absorbing setting.

This is a work I will like to return to and get the full story. The intriguing opening chapter reminded me of the assassin scene in Flash of the Sun.

Wilderness is also fast-paced. Una persona l'ha trovato utile. It's Koontz, so the writing is fantastic. The character is fantastic.

Editorial Reviews

It draws you in immediately. So, why the three stars? Because it's so short it isn't even a short story.

It's just a tease to get you to buy the novel -- which I wouldn't even mind if this had been free, but at 99 cents I kind of feel ripped off paying to read an introduction to a character. And not even a full introduction, since you have to buy the novel to find out what exactly is going on with him. As an introduction to Dean Koontz, my first experience with his writing, I felt taken advantage of.

Rather than a short story in its own right, it was a prologue to another story. Just as prologues give a scenario alone after which you read the actual story, this did not reveal the "story-telling" genius of the author, as I was hoping to be introduced to. It reflected his poetic style, yes.

A bit of tension, yes. But this was not a story. Not the way it was framed.

Within the novel were very poorly inserted "foreshadowings" to the other novel that this is selling. I was surprised by so much detail being put into a foreshadow usually a novice writer's mistake , but at the end I understood--THOSE were perhaps the climax and end of the story just stuck in as a flash-forward.

As other reviewers said, this seemed like a tactic more than a crafted project. I accidentally clicked one-click instead of send sample and could not easily undo the act. I decided to go forward with my purchase to see how he dealt with short story. But alas, beautiful writing does not a story produce. If I had read the reviews before purchase I would have known what I was getting into.

If I had read the reviews I would have not purchased this gimmick. I have not given up on his writing, though.
