If you go all the way down to Ashford Mill, the rest of Badwater Road is scenic and peaceful, because it is less traveled. There is little to see at Ashford Mill, and if you were designing your route specifically to see it and for no other reason, it isn't worth the added miles. Most modern cars function just fine in Death Valley — in fact, the tanks of emergency radiator water that used to be on main roads were removed some years ago.
You might see some of them around the park, trying to determine how much stress and abuse they can put on the various systems. Whatever you drive, the chances are its grandparents were put through their paces in Death Valley. Running out of gas is totally avoidable. Cars have fuel gauges, and usually now multiple trip odometers so you can record distance traveled from any given mileage, location, etc.
Learn how far your car will go on a tank, and reset one of the trip odometers every time you fill the tank.

I just got back last month after working there in May and June as a volunteer with the National Park Service, and I saw flocks of visitors from all over the world enjoying it. The biggest cause of death in Death Valley is not heat, thirst, dehydration, snakes, scorpions, or anything to do with Mother Nature. It is traffic accidents — not just any kind, but single-car crashes.
