Wasting Away ~ A Zombie Novel (Waiting to Die Book 2)

Some of my favorite Jenni and Katie funny quotes: The damn Russkies are behind it, I know. We never could trust them. View all 11 comments. Recommended to Brainycat by: I bought the trilogy based on recommendations I found on another forum. It really wants to be a great story, but it gets bogged down by over explanations.

The character development reminded me of Robert Jordan - give each character Their One Trait, then never pass up a chance to cut'n'paste The One Trait into the narrative, even if it breaks the flow of the story. The action is thin and predictable, but I kept reading through it expecting the cha I bought the trilogy based on recommendations I found on another forum. The Zombie Chronicles

Unfortunately, I never felt emotionally invested in the characters, and by a third of the way through I decided I was going to give it another third to become interesting. Not only did it not get interesting, it started reading like a young adult romance. Not my thing, though if the sales figures for Twilight are any indication I must be in the minority.

The writing style is very expository. It felt a little droll; like reading an objective recollection rather than fighting side by side with our heroines while society collapses around them. The author 'tells' more than 'shows', which is fine but I like a more vivid, descriptive style in my horror. Obviously, a lot of people like this book so please give it a try. I found it VERY reasonably priced at kobo. Readers like me, who enjoy vivid violence, gore and sex and uniquely quirky characterization will be disappointed. However, if you like your romance and horror "PG" I expect you would like this a lot.

Full review to come when I have time to write it, but for now, here's Readers intrigued by the rarity of a zombie-survival story being told entirely from a woman's point of view will have some fun with this, even though the author never fully capitalizes on the concept. I picked this up for two reasons and two reasons only. One was because the reading challenge I'm doing this spring has a task where I needed to read a sci-fi book. I asked my friend Felicia what she would recommend and she sent me this book. I figured that at worst I would be able to plow through it and at best it would be milding entertaining. I've always been way more of a non-fiction I'm almost at a loss as to what to say here because I know next to nothing about zombies or this type of book. I've always been way more of a non-fiction person because it seemed to be more worthwhile in a way, like I was always learning something, that the reading wasn't just frivolous fun.

Well, this was an immense amount of fun although I wouldn't call it frivolous at all! I can't wait to read the sequel and then the third installment!

I was and still am amazed at how Frater was able to make everything, not just some parts, everything , realistic as hell. And I mean, it scared me bad. I'm not by nature a jumpy person but this book really got me thinking the whole 'what-if' scenario all throughout. I'm thrilled that I found a new genre to read and I will always remember this book as being the first great zombie book I read! The characters were out of this world literally , if I had to pick a favorite I don't know where I would start. I like Juan a lot Katie and Jennie, the two main characters in the first one make the best team and Frater has their personalites matching perfectly without making them the 'same'.

The plot line and situations they had to go through were absolutely riveting. I found myself wanting to page through a little bit to "just see what happened" numerous times although I made myself wait and the end result was even more delicious. To not read this would be missing out At least give it a shot. Like I told Felicia- I would have laughed in the face of anyone if someone would have told me I'd like this kind of story. Even up until a week ago I'd have laughed my ass off. Hopefully the second is just as good as this one because I can't wait to find out what happens next.

The ending of this was just right- she left it so the reader is wanting more but also so you're surprisingly "full" too. Somehow she manages to flee t As the World Dies: Somehow she manages to flee the house and is rescued by Katie, a prosecutor who was rescued by a priest, but is now alone, except for a brave zombie warning dog, Jack. They are "the funeral of the world Jenni, once almost catatonic, has come to almost love her new role as, nicknamed by Katie, "a deadly Tinkerbell of death" , killing the zombies that remind her of all that she's lost. Our heroine is introduced as a lesbian and is fighting her inner turmoil over her lost wife and the chance to have a new relationship with Travis.

I loved the characters but got really pissed off at some of the townspeople and their narrow mindness over the LGBT lifestyle. It's weird but I foun Ahhh It's weird but I found myself connecting more with Jenni than Katie Good book overall and can't wait to see what happens next!! View all 8 comments.

I forced myself to finish this as about a little more than half way through I was ready to give up. So not my kind of zombie novel. Aug 11, S. Munt rated it it was amazing Shelves: Lots of time in cars on the highway, lots of foraging, the building of forts and the banding together of people. It's nicely paced- so it goes minute by minute and day by day without skipping large sections of time, the zombies are how zombies ought to be with nothing fancy thrown into the mix, and the writer's got the goods as far as world building goes and paints what one 5 Zombie Stars This was just a straight-up good Zombie book, and has basically everything I look for in a Zombie adventure: It's nicely paced- so it goes minute by minute and day by day without skipping large sections of time, the zombies are how zombies ought to be with nothing fancy thrown into the mix, and the writer's got the goods as far as world building goes and paints what one can only presume is a fairly realistic account of how things would play out when the shit virus hits the fan.

The characters are the best aspect of the book for me. For all intents and purposes, I think Katie is supposed to be the main character, but it's Jenny who I think really adds some spark to what could have been an otherwise generic story. She's a bit crazy and has a lot of issues, but though her mind doesn't work well- I like the way it works: It took a while for me to realise that this series was going to be told from a primarily female POV, and was also written by one, and though my husband is a huge fan of this series, he has grumbled occasionally, that the she-power is a little much. While I don't agree that anything the women do can be considered extra-ordinary or uber-feminazi, I will admit that the male characters tend to come down on the 'soft' side of things.

Travis and his gun issues, for instance- WTF? It would take a lot of guts and killer instincts to survive an ordeal like this- and we're reading a story from a Survivors side of things, right? If not, there would be three paragraphs and then a lot of demonic growling… What's wrong with it? Travis can get on my nerves sometimes I really like strong men- which is possible without them having to come off as Rambo and Travis can be a bit spineless, so Juan's my favourite and I had some issues with how quickly Katie rebounded.

Okay, you like men and women too, so by all means- have at this new dish now that your wife is dead, but while she was humming and hawing about it being too soon for her to be considering jumping into someone else's arms- I tended to agree and couldn't believe that she was even contemplating it yet. I think maybe two weeks had lapsed between death of a wife, and want of another partner? That's okay in Jenny's 'battered wife' case and would even make sense if Katie's wife was still alive, and Katie's feelings were merely splitting proving them to be not so strong in the first place … but the emphasis on her desire for Travis struck me as highly inappropriate for a grieving widow, and didn't make sense given how much time Katie spends grieving, moping, sulking… etc etc over her darling Lydia.

As much as I like the emerging relationship, I wish that the writer had left the notion of her having any feelings for Travis- at all- until at least the second novel, and then maybe a month down the line. In the same vein- I don't think that Jenny has mourned the loss of her children nearly enough, and the fact that she forgot her step-son for even ten minutes horrified me. I have a step-daughter and I can tell you that worry for her would be at the top of my priority list despite how much I was grieving or in shock over the loss of my biological children. No one's perfect, after all, and Jenny has clearly been in need of a mental tidy for awhile, but I hope this issue is touched on again.

In the very least, I'd like to see her go into shock once or twice when encountering a zombie child. I mean, my kids are alive, and I still can't stomach zombie kids in movies. But i digress- these are only minor criticisms in an otherwise awesome story. I'm already onto book two, so it';s a page turner, no doubt, and would like to commend Rhiannon Frater for pulling off an incredibly suspenseful and often nail-biting series, without having to go all game Of thrones or Walking Dead, and kill off all of the important or favoured characters to add to the shock value!

Jun 25, DoodlePanda rated it did not like it Shelves: This book kept showing up on my recommended list, and the blurb sounded good. A zombie story with two women kicking ass? Unfortunately, for me, the story just didn't follow up on the promise. I think it was a combination of several things that didn't work for me. Mainly it was the way the author describes A lot of it seems like it doesn't have any place in the story.

Like it's been put in as a page filler. Over time this really started to bug me. And some of the descriptions were just The other thing that bugged me was the conversations. They sounded fake to me. And the descriptions of feelings were over the top.

In addition to this there were some things that just didn't make sense to me personally. Like the way Katie and Travis reacted to each other I'm not going to go into detail as there might be minor spoilers involved. I felt the way Jenni reacted to Travis strange too. Just seems strange to me. I got halfway through the book, I really liked the first chapter and I kept hoping it would get better again. Then today when I started the audio I accidentally skipped a chapter.

It took me a few minutes to realize why it suddenly seemed like I had missed something. Then, after I understood what had happened, I actually considered not jumping back to see what I missed, as the book would be finished quicker. That's when I realized that I was not enjoying it at all, and that I have so many other books I could be enjoying instead!

She did an ok job with what she had to work with I think. The only thing I didn't like was how she did the voices. Or rather didn't do the voices. She seemed to have one female and one male voice. No accents or anything to keep the voices apart. Which got a little confusing now and again. But all in all it was ok. This book seems to have a lot of positive reviews, so if you have read the blurb and think you're going to love it then I think you should give it a go. I honestly think the underlying story is ok, it just really needs some good editing Aug 14, Katrina rated it did not like it.

DNF I rarely ever rate books that I don't finish, but this one was that bad. I just couldn't get through it She is a complete idiot. This woman is fully aware that she is in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, and she refuses to buy toilet paper at a gas station with her still functional CREDIT CARD because it is "too expensive," thinking that she won't be able to pay it off. She is aware that these creatures terrorizing the town are zombies and is the one to i DNF I rarely ever rate books that I don't finish, but this one was that bad. She is aware that these creatures terrorizing the town are zombies and is the one to inform Katie of this fact.

Well, what are they then? It's zombies,' Jenni said. The city has gone insane-' 'With zombies,' Jenni added helpfully. Who knows how many more there are? Called them reanimated dead. Nobody wants to say zombie. Jenni's baby died, and the image of those "tiny fingers" under the door of her house haunt her memory every other page. Physically, she is a BAMF and is an extraordinary shot. Mentally, she is the narrator of Rebecca reincarnated.

She likes to constantly remind you that she doesn't want to be the leader. She is a follower. She wants Katie to be the one in charge at all times. For some inexplicable reason, both of these women think about how pretty the other one is at random times. Katie's wife just died and Jenni's family is dead, but who cares, right? Look at those beautiful facial features of the stranger I just met!

And some sentences were just off. Or is this trying to tell me that she has three arms? The writing was just juvenile. This book is categorized as horror. How can I be horrified if the writing is so bland that it doesn't give me any emotion? I have never been afraid of zombies - but I am now!

This book is so intense that I ended up with a cramp in my hand because I was holding on to the book so tightly. Action packed and fast paced. Readers should be warned that it is fairly graphic in it's descriptions. I found the first chapter to be the most difficult to get through so if you can make it through it then you have no worries about being able to handle the rest. Loved the characters and I'm really worried that some of my fav I have never been afraid of zombies - but I am now! Loved the characters and I'm really worried that some of my favorites will be victims in future books.

I will be reading the next book as soon as my hand cramp is all healed up ; May 07, Trudi rated it liked it Recommends it for: I had a helluva good time reading it even though at times a few of the characters Jenni and some of the dialogue seriously grated on my nerves. In Book 1 of a trilogy, Frater offers up a textbook genre zombie story, borrowing a lot from Romero canon who she gives ample homage to and a little from Danny Boyle damn those quick-moving zombies!!

At first I questioned the seething hatred experienced by some of the characters — why they should so immediately loath the zombies and lust to kill them. Killing anything is pretty traumatic and I felt it would take longer for survivors to become adept at it or need more time to fuel the flames of their hatred.

While some of the overkill seemed out of place, at the same time Frater is probably completely spot-on in her observations of human behavior. There is also a scene at the beginning of the book that makes this book worth picking up. Children are usually exempt from zombie stories, but Frater dares to go there and she does it very effectively. While I will probably forget most of this book, I will never forget that scene. This is the utmost compliment to Frater — I do need to know what happens next and so will you I bet. I could literally NOT put that book down! Yesterday I read about 3 chapters, and then today it was like a freight train.

I couldn't stop reading if my life depended on it. Where the heck do I even start? The book starts off with the most heart wrenching scene I've ever read before, or it's up there at least. This is a mild spoiler, I suppose, but I'm not hiding it because it is actually the very first scene you will read. The book starts off with a woman standing in shock on h Holy Bajeebers!!!! The book starts off with a woman standing in shock on her front porch as her 3 year old son, now a zombie, reaches his hands under the door, scraping the skin off, trying to get to her At the window her undead 12 year old son and husband also clamoring to break the glass and devour her, the latter having killed his sons.

I can't even imagine the horror of this moment for Jenni. Right before she's toast a woman pulls up in a truck and saves her life. They go on the run, on a mission to save Jenni's last remaining son who's away at camp, and also to find a safe place where they can try to survive. This book was edge of your seat from start to finish.

One horrifying moment rolls into the next, and you're just steamrolled right along with it. Jenni and Katie the rescuer bond immediately, as you would in that type of situation because life and death will do that to you. Katie is the rational heroine, the calmer one. Jenni is insane, duh after what she saw, but it works in their favor because she's one tough bitch.

Then you have Travis picture Blake Shelton as a hero in the zombie apocalypse who's your laid back Texan, with a gentle side. And Juan, the Mexican American with a potty mouth loved him! Nerit and Ralph, Jason, Jack, and a whole host of characters all fighting to stay alive and build a life. My only complaint, sometimes their reactions were a little unbelievable. Jenni doesn't feel as grief stricken as you would think that a woman would be after witnessing the death of her children. I think think the book could have been a lot more original if she hadn't held back with the character emotion.

Overall, what a ride. I'm still feeling my heart pound with adrenaline over here. Thanks Leea my fellow Golden Girl , for letting me tag along on your read! I'm so glad I decided to be a copycat! She finds a note that one of the guards was going to give to his wife. She takes it and pockets it. She reaches the first solitary door and opens it, blaster in hand.

But no one is in there. She goes to the next one and as soon as she opens it, a huge Wookiee comes out screaming and getting ready to attack Zahara. She yells at him to stop and he does. Zahara unlocks the next door and a man comes out. He introduces himself as Han Solo and the Wookiee's name is Chewbacca. Zahara comes around the corner and tells them to stop and that they are all getting out together. They realize the escape pod's hatch has been sealed because of security measures. So Han, Chewie, and Zahara go to the bridge to disable it, while Kale and Trig stay at the escape pod. The Longo brothers hear something outside and Kale leaves to investigate. Trig hears something moving inside the escape pod and scratching at the door. Despite his pleas, Zahara opens the pod. When Kale comes back, he sees his brother is gone and the escape pod is opened.

He frantically starts searching for him. He finds him in a maintenance tunnel all scratched and scared. Then Kale hears things moving toward him through the tunnel. Kale picks up Trig and runs to the bridge. Zahara opens the escape pod but doesn't hear anything back on the comlink.

But their dad gets Kale and bites him on the leg. When Kale awakes, they are in the hangar bay of the Star Destroyer. Kale realizes he has been bit but when he stands up, blood starts spurting out of the wound. Zahara says that she and Kale would stay there and Han, Chewie, and Trig need to get to the bridge to start the engines. Trig at this point is having some issues since he just saw his dead father bite his brother. Reluctantly, he leaves with Han and Chewie. Han, Chewie, and Trig are walking along a corridor when the ceiling explodes and hundreds of the zombies come pouring out of the hole.

They take off running and end up running in circles. Zahara and Kale are sitting next to the turbolift when Kale tells her to cut his leg off. She notices that his entire leg is turning grey and after some arguing she goes to cut it off but realizes it has moved into his abdomen. Zahara quickly cuts into his stomach and pulls out a big infection cell. As she holds it in her hand, she sees it moving around and trying to find an opening to get into.

She quickly disposes of it and cleans up the wounds on Kale.
