Willig was to catalogue the mammalian diversity of Paraguay in an intensive and extensive manner, including comprehensive documentation of associated ectoparasites. Starting in , we collected many species of bats, rodents, and marsupials, and expanded the known range of a number of taxa.
The project provided the base data for a number of doctoral dissertations and master theses, included research opportunities for undergraduate students, and served as the point of departure for many subsequent research projects that focus on conservation an d infectious diseases associated with mammals. The Country Because of its central location within the climatic, geological, and biotic schema of the South American continent, Paraguay is ideal for exploring a variety of biogeographical and ecological questions.

Diplomacy in Action
Map of Paraguay showing 7 biogeographic regions and 28 localities where bats, small mammals, and their associated ectoparasites were collected. Paraguay is a small country , square km , is transected by the Tropic of Capricorn, occurs at the interface of subtropical and temperate regions, is relatively flat and low-lying, and experiences hot summers and mild to cold winters.
Based on floral and geographic features, the country includes 7 phytogeographic regions or biomes. Three biomes compose the Chaco of western Paraguay. The Matogrosense biome is characterized by medium height m trees and sub-humid forests with dense undergrowth.
