A linguist told me that the original might have been of Gothic origin so this might be what the original had looked like. As far as I know it was probably written in northern Italy by Langobardians Upper High Germans , and then half-translated into its current form somewhere else. Why yes, of course there could have been an older poem in Gothic that this one is based on. Especially since the main characters are a Gothic soldier who fought under king Theoderich, and his son. The story is historically incorrect, so I assume it was written quite some time after the events.

Btw, I found a modern back translation into Langobardian here: The lyrics page of the Hildebrandslied was split into 2 because one band who covered it had split it like that.
