After Bridegroom accidentally fell to his death while photographing his friend Alexandra Grossi on the roof of her four-story apartment building in the Silverlake - Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, Crone was threatened with physical violence if he attended Bridegroom's funeral and was not mentioned in Bridegroom's obituary or memorial service.
Crone had also been denied hospital visitations and other rights accorded married couples because he was not recognized as Bridegroom's partner or as family. Crone's emotional plea for rights for same-sex couples became one of the most widely viewed clips on YouTube shortly after its release. Crone was stunned and gratified by the reception to his video, and told RadarOnline. Bridegroom , a documentary directed by Linda Bloodworth-Thomason , based on the story of Crone's and Bridegroom's relationship and the difficulties Crone faced after his partner's death, premiered on April 23, , at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Bridegroom was endorsed by former President Bill Clinton , who introduced the documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival.

One of my favorite characters in mythology is Baubo, the Greek goddess of mirth. As legend has it, when Demeter was in mourning after the abduction of her daughter Persephone, she scoured the Earth, and neglected her duties of fertility and agriculture.

She eventually took refuge in the city of Eleusis as a guest of the king. Finally the old crone Baubo came along, and told Demeter a series of bawdy jokes. For a finale, she raised her skirt up and flashed her nethers in an act of joyful irreverence. Demeter broke down laughing at the surprising sight, and this is what gave her the strength back to demand that Zeus release her daughter from Hades.
Baubo is a sacred trickster, whose humor and aging body are a source of healing for the entire world. Other powerful crones are found across cultural storyscapes, and we can see her vast multiplicity. She can be creative and destructive, like the Mayan goddess Ix Chel in her grandmother guise, offering medicine, midwifery, and waters that both heal and harm. Baba Yaga, the Slavic forest dweller who lives in a chicken leg hut, is also seen as generous or villainous depending on the tale.
Crone’s tracks
The crone can weave the web of life itself, the way Native American creation goddess Spider Grandmother did. She can be terrifying like Black Annis who gobbles the children and lambs of the English countryside. Italian witch figure, Befana, is essentially a female Santa Claus who flies around the country on her broom and sneaks down chimney chutes to gift children with either candy or coal, depending on their behavior.
One of the most beloved mythic crones is Hecate, the Greek goddess of magic, liminality, and necromancy. She is a highly powerful deity, who today is often associated with the waning or dark moon. She later mutated into a three-fold goddess, depicted sometimes with a dog, a serpent, and a horse for each head. This triplicate form morphed into the Roman goddess Trivia, who oversaw the places where three roads crossed.
Whatever her configuration, she is said to watch over boundaries, portals, and gateways.

Hounds usually accompany her and she holds the keys of divine mystery. One thing that remains consistent about Hecate is that she is frequently shown as a torchbearer. It was she who led Demeter through the underworld each year to bring Persephone back to the surface of the Earth. These words translate to: Like Hecate, crones are often great helpers in stories. Each of them offers assistance to the hero on his or her quest, and most often during moments of crisis and self-doubt. Rarer, though, are instances when the protagonist of a story is the crone herself.
As I get older, I find myself soaking up positive depictions of aging with the thirst of a Jericho rose. One of my not-so-guilty pleasures is watching films that feature older females who get a second chance at life: I want to know that there is an alternative road for me to walk.
