No wonder development in school was under pressure, self-esteem destroyed, and talents not valued. Grandpa, and a very few friends are the only glimmers of hope in Vera's young life. When grandpa passes away, and Vera is prohibited to befriend Aslan, a Georgian. From a technical side I missed the reason why Armen disappeared from the scene in the last chapters of the book.

Some scenes are described in painful details, other periods are skipped. The visit notably with Armen to the dentist has a kind of open ending, just as the sudden trip with dad to relatives in the United States. There's a sequel in the making. For the simple crime of being a daughter rather than a son, the young author was reduced to little more than a lackey when her younger brother was born shortly after she turned 7 years old, kept isolated as a virtual slave in her own home and subjected to brutal "discipline" from a man she is forced to call uncle on almost a daily basis.

This book draws you in, chapter after chapter, driven on by the question "What is this demented lunatic uncle going to do to this girl next? Fae rated it really liked it. I'm typically not one to read memoirs, but I was asked to give this one a chance so I did. I was super surprised. It wasn't like one of those non-fiction political novels or some memoir that went over the last 60 years of someone's life. Mother at Seven was literally a look inside the world of a young girl who should have been playing dolls and having fun with her girlfriends.

Instead, she was a mother to her infant brother. She also experienced horrible abuse at the hands of someone who was supp I'm typically not one to read memoirs, but I was asked to give this one a chance so I did. She also experienced horrible abuse at the hands of someone who was supposed to be her uncle. Oh my goodness, I couldn't believe what this child went through and still persevered. Well-written and a quick read, I would tell anyone to give this book a read.

Again, even if non-fiction isn't your thing, give it a shot. You won't be sorry. This was a tragic story, but was told truly terribly. The book felt like it was written either by a non-native speaker, without an editor, or a child. The words were simple, and there was so much "telling" rather than showing.

The author's ego is insane; to read this is to hear about how this genius, perfect child was abused. Yes, the abuse was horrifying, but no person is as perfect as she made herself out to be. In particular, the dialogue sounded downright robotic. Can't say I'd recommend thi This was a tragic story, but was told truly terribly.

Can't say I'd recommend this without a thorough rewrite. Veronika's abuse is unthinkable, and that she survived is inconceivable. That is my only complaint, and it may or may not be the author's fault. At the very least, the book's editor did a poor job; awkward wording and sentence structure made the storyline a bit hard to follow at times. That said, Veronika's story is powerful and often difficult to read. Then, just as we begin to believe that V Veronika's abuse is unthinkable, and that she survived is inconceivable.

I got extremely angry. I put the book down and got silent. These crimes are so bizarre, it's hard to at time wrap my brain around it. I know that I am not as far along in my Christian walk as I supposed because I wanted to kill Uncle Armen and the mother. I wanted flog the dad and the other family members that sat by and did nothing to intercede. There is no way that y I won this book in a goodreads giveaway. There is no way that you can experience this and not be affected some type of way. All of the people in authority that were supposed to protect her failed miserably.

The fact that Veronika is able to tell her story is a sign of her resilient spirit. As much as it pained me to read this book, and I contemplated many times on just stopping, I wanted to see how she turned her life around. I guess I will have to wait for the sequel. There were some typos and subject verb agreement issues. I understand that with English as a Second Language it may be tricky. I was really disappointed with the dad though.

HE was such a wuss, ugh! Heartbreaking Really good read, couldn't put the book down, although it was heart breaking to read about a child suffering you want to keep reading to find out how she comes out the other side.
