When Mariette offers a large reward for its return, Gaston claims it, giving the name of Lavalle. While claiming the reward, Gaston charms Mariette, and admits to being broke. Mariette hires him as her private secretary. He arranges for Lily to be employed in Mariette's office, and stands up to Mariette's board of directors, led by Monsieur Adolph J. Aubrey Smith , the manager, who is openly suspicious of him.
Having observed Mariette open her private safe and memorized the combination , Gaston persuades her that she should keep a large sum there, including half of her next dividend installment. Mariette begins to flirt with Gaston, and he begins to have feelings for her. Unfortunately for the thieves, Mariette has two suitors: Fearing imminent discovery, Gaston and Lily decide to flee that night with what is in the safe, and not wait for the dividend installment. The lighthearted Depression-era comedy clearly has the famed Lubitsch touch.
What sticks with you long after the movie is over is the terrific, European cosmopolitan humour, and unrelenting sexiness of it all. This is, without a single word of hyperbole, one of the most taut scripts and perfectly-executed pieces of comic direction in the history of film.
The first two thirds of the film are impeccable, relying on exceptional performances especially Herbert Marshall and a delightfully sophisticated dialogue, so it is really a pity that the plot starts to become a bit implausible and contrived after that, towards the end. Okay, okay, I was wrong. Sophistication, wit, and sex wrapped in A lovely, simple and clever movie.

Although this film is greatly valued by critics, film historians and its many fans, it still does not receive the respect it is due. It is an injustice that this film is shown so rarely. I would recommend to TCM that they show their "classics" less frequently and a number of less well-known films such as this more often. Trouble in Paradise is a comedy counterpart to a melodrama; it is a romantic melo-comedy.
It is unlike any other Lubitsch film with which I am familiar. In fact, it is difficult for me to think of any film with which to compare this masterpiece. The cast is outstanding, each delivering dialog in mock melodramatic style.
Ernst Lubitsch
The soundtrack, the editing, and especially the sublime writing all combine to produce a unique, satirical melodrama parody. Perhaps this film was the model for many later films that hoped to attain the same comic irony, but seem humorless to me. The key seems to be that the actors do not take themselves seriously, but they portray characters who do. Everything about this film is fabulous. I cannot fathom how anybody could suggest this film is outdated in any manner because it captures the ambiance of an era so perfectly.
