I loved the complexity and depth of the characters and the chemistry between them. This story has a bit of everything to keep a reader intrigued; action, suspense, witty dialogue, drama, picturesque and potent scene descriptions, steamy romance and of course a happily ever after. There is also the fact that Crystal's company has a strict no fraternization policy and Crystal would loose her job if she became personally involved with Connor. This was my first book of Holly Dodd's and my second book of Mickey Miller's and my first of their joint collaborative efforts together. I am not disappointed. There were steamy scenes and real feelings and honest interactions to back those up. This book also makes me look forward to reading the first book in this series, Dirty CEO.

Unbound Jul 05, Samantha What's the author equivalent of an egot Dec 11, If there isn't, there should be: Dec 11, BUT - and that's the only criticism I have - how is the cat on the cover not a main character? Honestly, though, for some weird reason, I thought this was a story about a girl that can see ghosts true and her best friend, a ghost cat totally not true. Turns out her best friend IS a ghost, but a human one. You know what I mean.

Not sure where this misconception came from, but I definitely would have liked that version, too. Overall I enjoyed this book a lot. Since it is a middle-grade novel and tuned for a younger audience than ADSOM and Vicious it comes without saying that it is less suspenseful and intricate than her YA or adult novels. I loved seeing how the level of writing and plotting changes when the target audience is another. I have read so many of Schwab's novels, but never a middle-grade one and it's amazing how the author adjusts her writing but still keeps her voice.

I would have been fairly spooked if I had read this book as an 8-year-old kid if I'm being honest. It was a fun, slightly creepy and superbly nuanced novel for kids and teenagers. It talks about friendship, trust and death in a child-friendly way without giving kids the feeling that you don't trust them they couldn't stomach such heavy topics. Oh, and if you are a Potterhead, this is a perfect book for you, too.

I rate this book with 4 stars because I was not as involved in the story, and did not get as warm with the main character as I would have liked it to be. Nevertheless, I can highly recommend this book for anyone who loves a good ghost story or two. Find more of my books on Instagram I didn't realize this was a Middle Grade book which isn't my cup of tea.

This was a quick read and a little girl seeing ghosts wasn't uninteresting but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are 12 or under, or usually love MG. View all 7 comments. Jul 04, Lola rated it liked it Shelves: Good, but you and I both know Victoria Schwab could have done so, so much better. I'll attempt to film a video review my first one! View all 23 comments. Me, in a crowd of Schwab fans: This happened after s Me, in a crowd of Schwab fans: This happened after she almost drowned, which is when her dead best friend Jacob showed up as well.

When I first read the blurb, I was in love with the concept of the story. A girl who can see ghosts? Traveling to a city full of them? With a ghost best friend? Then meets another person who can see ghosts? Cass and Jacob were interesting characters to read about, and I loved their friendship dynamic. We got the perfect amount of backstory from her and I adored it.

I loved getting to know different places around the city and it definitely added to the atmosphere of the book. But god, the most disappointing thing about City of Ghosts was the lack of good plot development. And then it got smothered by other things. And while I like how Cass and Jacob turned out at the end of the book, and the villain, I was really disappointed by how little we got to know a side character named Lara.

In reality, she showed up briefly in the first third, came back in the last third, and disappeared. The blurb says that after Cass meets Lara, she starts to question what she can truly do, and it seems like Lara is basically just a plot device. Also Lara is pretty much the diverse rep for this whole book so. Overall, City of Ghosts is an atmospheric, creepy book that will definitely keep you engaged with its fast pace and intriguing characters, but the lack of proper plot development is something that really bothered me and kept me from enjoying it more.

Besides mine, of course, for having to feel this disappointment. This did not affect my opinion in any way. View all 18 comments. View all 21 comments. I know she debuted with MG so this must be a bit of a "going back to the roots" for her too!

And it was very very Schwabish. Dead boy ghost friends and Gryffindor girls who plunge into trouble and quirky parents and sinister dark forces beyond the living realm that want to devour cHILDREN. I did expect it to freak me out as much as Coraline did, though I actually felt this was tamer. But still the same sort of vibe! I enjoyed it for being cute and slightly sinister and absolutely full of dead things.

I mean best friends are hard to get, ok, so full applause to Cassidy for scoring a dead BFF. You do what you must.

It's a pretty straight forward plot with easy to devour writing. It was easy to get into Cass' view and admire her!

Vox Machina Go to Hell - Critical Role RPG Episode 91

She seems pretty lonely and isolated despite Jacob, our dear ghost best friend because her parents have a pretty weird job studying paranormal activity and Cass is still shaken from having nearly died last year. Now they're attached and she can walk through the Veil to see dead people. Mostly she just takes photos of them Cass' adventures in the Veil get WAY darker.

I do so so love how MG focuses so wholly on friendship. Jacob and Cass are great! They snark and share comics and make fun of each other I love love that! I love how Schwab writes clever and intelligent girls who team up! My only quibble is that Cass wasn't actively interested in her own adventure. And like, YEAH they are!

But like she has this cool ability and she seemed to not want or care about it. So I felt the story pushed her along and she was often an unwilling participant. And possibly I felt Cass read more like a 9 year old?

See a Problem?

But I might be out of touch with MG soooo yep. I liked it a lot! It was stuffed with the haunting and the mysterious, all wrapped up with sweet friendships and clever complex girls and the stunning details and aesthetics of Edinburgh! Jan 22, Hamad rated it liked it Shelves: Your child may love it and you will have zero feelings toward it. You may even think that it was very short and had more potential!

I may have exaggerated a lot here but what I am trying to say is that this is a Middle Grade book and we should approach it as one. I think someone who reads a lot of MG will be able to judge it better than most of us. Schwab and how she is a great writer and always comes up with awesome twists and ideas. I think if this was an adult book, she would have done an outstanding job.

And I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. But I felt the ending was a bit rushed and it could have been a bit slower. And tbh, that fascinated me, Victoria can write MG, YA and adults book and change the voice and settings accordingly! There were many HP references that warmed my heart but I am not sure if MG readers would feel the same about it.

I like the characters and their development, I like almost everything about this. As a MG book, I give it 4 stars. As an adult reader, I give it 3 stars. For MG readers and adults who enjoy the MG genre. Otherwise, I recommend going into this objectively or skipping it altogether! Schwab and her covers never disappoint. This was so much fun! May 18, Ashley Nuckles rated it really liked it.

This was not at all what I thought it was going to be in a good way! It was equal parts cute middle grade, creepy ghost stories, and fun adventure tale all in one! Despite me being annoyed by all the Harry Potter references they were everywhere!! Nothing special and it felt a little rushed, but it had a nice idea, great writing style and characters with a lot of potential. I'm looking forward to seeing how Schwab is going to continue this story! Vojsk rated it really liked it.

A hand grabbing mine. A light in the dark. But someone, something saved her. A ghost, named Jacob. When her parents start a new documentary, Cassidy goes on a new adventure to Schottland. Even though I absolutely adore Victoria Schwab, her writing style and the whole ghost story, I had some problems with the whole pacing in this book. In the beginning and in the middle it was pretty slow, it was a little bit like an introduction. She can step through the veil and see ghosts and their death, their story. Jacob, her best friend and a ghost is really a little mystery. He really loves her like a best friend and would do anything for her.

There was another girl, Lara, with special skills like Cassidy.
