The girl sitting in the grass is Mary Fisk. Today the building still stands on the corner of Oakland and Walnut and is used as an office building. One example of the Queen Anne style is the Antoinette Blesch home. Unlike many other Queen Anne homes in the area, this house retains the original siding and ornamentation. Frank started a dry-goods store called the Jorgensen-Blesch Company with his brother-in-law John Jorgensen. In a sight not often seen today, a family works together in the garden. Members of the Lurquin family helped to maintain a plot on their property, reaching from Dousman Street to Elmore Street. William Larsen, who started his own produce business, also contracted to buy fresh vegetables from the Lurquin gardens.

This area of Fort Howard was fast becoming a residential area, and farm buildings such as those visible on the left were fast disappearing. The mansion of Andrew Elmore stood north of Mather before it was razed in A successful businessman and philanthropist, Elmore moved to Fort Howard in Elmore platted some of the property and named the streets after his family and friends. This early brick front house was built in by Gustar Genzel on Dousman St.

Francis Beattie built this home at South Broadway in , where his daughters lived until Clifford Lyndahl bought the home in and used it for his funeral business. The dwelling, built in , is a variation on the Stick Style, characterized by stick-like framing boards that delineated distinct exterior surface areas. John Brogan was a big man who lived in a big house. His late Queen Anne-style home was the largest in the district.     It borrows from several architectural schools of the period. The flat-roofed, stucco-clad house is two stories, although the exterior appears otherwise. This block of Oregon was carved through for horses and buggies, not the cars of today. The homes were built in the turn of the 19th century and remain mostly unchanged. Among the neighborhood residents in the s, staring on the leftside of the street and heading west, were the Cornilisons, the Fairbairn family, Dr. Selmer house at North Oakland dates from It is one of the few examples of the Prairie School style of architecture in the Green Bay area.

    The house exhibits the horizontal emphasis that is characteristic of this style. The Selmer house remains at its original location as a single-family home and is in excellent repair. The Rehder home was lot 4, block 2 of the Tank family Third Edition, and the street was called 5th Avenue until Walter Rehder family bought the house in from Julius Sims. The Rehders renovated the home in , turning it into the bungalow style we see today. The present church pictured here was built in at North Maple. The First Presbyterian Church was organized in , and by Christmas Eve of that year had moved into its first home.

    In , the church moved to its current location at the corner of Ashland and Walnut. The original building at that site served until , when the current building was constructed. Fort Howard Congregational, located on the southwest corner of Chestnut and 3rd Streets, was dedicated in January of Reverend Jeremiah Porter, who was also involved in the Underground Railroad with his wife, was the first pastor of the church.

    The original congregation spoke both English and Scandinavian. The steeple was easily discernible due to its height and decoration and was a source of pride for West Side residents. The steeple and shorter tower of this church no longer exist, and there are extensions of the building on each side.

    The first church was built on the block of South Broadway. The structure expanded in and moved across the street to its present site in The original wooden church was dismantled in and replaced with the fine brick building that exists today.

    Its members changed the name to Trinity Lutheran Church, to reflect their belief in the one Triune God.     This photograph is taken in front of West High School. Written on the back of this photograph is the following: In , this school was built on Dousman Street between Chestnut and Maple. In , the school was enlarged to eight rooms. In the late s, the Dousman School was replaced by a new school known today as Fort Howard. Miss Farrell gathers her class at the Dousman School for a picture. The Tank School stood on the northeast corner of 5th and Oakland Avenue, on property that once belonged to the Tank family.

    Today a new school of the same name stands in the same vicinity. Helen Ferslev was principal at Jackson School between and Before I left there were two more additions. That was the beginning, and after that the area really began to grow. Buildings like this, usually cement block, thrived during the Depression Era.     It was located between Dousman and Hubbard Streets and faced East. This Broadway House was established in It was a brick structure with 16 rooms, and a frontage of only 25 feet on Dousman Street. In , three stores were added on the street level. A third story was added in At some point, the name was changed to Broadway Hotel, the name by which it is better remembered. The hotel was razed in Note the boardwalk and dirt road in front of the hotel.

The second building still stands today. The Junction Hotel was built in the early days of railroad service in Green Bay.

    The hotel functioned mainly to serve the passengers of the two railroads meeting there, the Kewaunee, Green Bay, and Western Railroad, and the Chicago and North Western Railroad. In , the hotel was razed after a major fire. The Blackstone began as a small but fine hotel at Dousman Street. This drawing shows the Blackstone before it was destroyed by fire on February 12, A small restaurant carrying the Blackstone name was built on the same property. The Commercial Hotel sat on the northwest corner of Broadway and Walnut. Family- style dinners were served upstairs.
