The first section of the book traces the ancestry and inherent behaviour of dogs, from their origins as pack animals related to the wolf or the jackal. The second part examines what most people describe as problem behaviour, which is just normal canine behaviour exhibited in the wrong place.
The book concludes with an A-Z of common problems, their causes and cures.

I did find myself becoming confused at several points as his methods seem very sound, but I felt I needed more detail - take the 'discs' he talks about, I am still not clear on their use. I will put some of his methods into operation with our new puppy, I completely agree with his view that punishment doesn't work - praise and distraction are the way to go: Interesting read I enjoyed most parts of this book, though I would never agree to using some of the methods outlined invisible fences for example. Mostly a good read though, and it is interesting trying to work out a dogs perspective on problems, to deal with the cause, rather than just trying to blindly train a preferred behaviour.
It's really outdated and the domination theory is now known to be nonsense, but I have to admit that the author had some really interesting ideas as for and made a big progress in training methods. Sep 05, Titus L rated it really liked it.
