The Grey Zone

This isn't an uplifting film as you might have guessed, but it does really give you a lot to think about, mostly because of the issues it raises.

Give this one a watch. It's something quite special. A group of Hungarian jews who work in a death camp plan an uprising to destroy the crematorium when it becomes clear that they are next on the death list. Based upon an eye witness account, The Grey Zone is a harrowing story of life in a concentration camp where all human morality is abandoned in the attempt to stay alive.

The characters are all regular people who are forced to choose between collaboration and death and in turn have to live with the consequences of their actions and it makes you wonder what you would do if you were in the same position. Great performances all round Harvey Keitel's Hogan's Heroes accent notwithstanding make for an intelligent and affecting story that maybe is not on a level with Schindler's List or Downfall, but it's still a powerful and thought provoking film about what happens when human life loses all value. Grim but in good way.

The Grey Zone - Trailer

The Grey Zone By. What's next, Carrot Top in a movie about Tiananmen Square? Former phone company pitchdude David Arquette gets serious there's a lot of yelling in this grim, grimy look at the Sonderkommando of Auschwitz--Jewish prisoners who worked in the death camp in exchange for a few more months of life. Actor-director Tim Blake Nelson's dark tale gets credit for exposing this untold history but fails just about everywhere else. Another example of a great idea gone wrong, the film is strongest when it considers the moral question of the welfare of the one versus the many, but tight, nervous camera work and some shocking scenes don't help the already overwrought drama or the horrible accents.

About The Grey Zone

The film's clumsiness detracts from the solemnity of the story and makes even decent actors such as Harvey Keitel and Steve Buscemi look bad. A small group of Sonderkommandos , prisoners assigned to dispose of the bodies of other dead prisoners, are plotting an insurrection that, they hope, will destroy at least one of the camp's four crematoria and gas chambers. When the women's activity is eventually discovered by the Germans they are savagely tortured , but they don't reveal the plot.

A new trainload of Hungarian Jewish prisoners arrives, and all are immediately sent to the gas chambers. As the group is given instructions about "delousing", a fearful, angry man in the group begins shouting questions at one of the Sonderkommandos, Hoffman Arquette , who has been issuing the instructions.

Hoffman beats him to death in an outburst of frustration, in an attempt to make the man stop talking. After the gassing of this same group, a badly shaken Hoffman finds a young girl alive beneath a pile of bodies. He removes her from the chamber, and, after informing the leader of the insurgency, Schlermer Daniel Benzali , takes her to a storage room and summons Nyiszli, who revives her.

Noticing that one of the prisoners present, Abramowics Buscemi , is there illegally, he shoots him, prompting the girl to scream and to be discovered.

Nyiszli then takes Muhsfeldt outside and tells him about the uprising, but cannot tell him where or when it will begin. Muhsfeldt agrees to protect the young girl after the uprising is suppressed. The insurrection begins, and Crematorium IV is destroyed with the smuggled explosives. All the Sonderkommandos who survive the explosions and gunfights with the SS are captured.
