Renegade (Tao of Leverage Book 1)

But he also has a secret that no one in the Renegades knows about. And when he fought the 'Nightmare' he has no idea who she is underneath her mask , she utters a phrase that tells him she might know who his mother's murderer is. So Adrian sets out to find her, while Nova sets plots in place to take out the Renegades for good. I'm going to stop there and leave the rest of the book as a surprise. Trust me, just dive in! As I mentioned before, this is like a mashup of all your favorite superhero movies, but at the same time, the story is totally unique and so are the characters. I didn't feel like I was reading another origin story or watching a movie I've seen a thousand times.

This was SO fun, twisty, and fast paced. Meyer is so insanely creative - we saw that in her Lunar Chronicles series that I loved - and I would argue that this might even be stronger though no one can replace Thorne. The whole plot is brilliant. My only complaint is that we don't get resolution for the one thing I craved, though it will certainly be in the sequel s.

I neeeeeded to see how that played out. View all 22 comments. Ughhh this is one of those books where I'm going to fail miserably at explaining what it's about because I need to use my hands to map out the tangled web of identities and goals So Nova starts out with the "villain" Anarchists and Adrian is with the superhero Renegades, but Nova eventually goes undercover to try out for the Renegades. She ends up joining Adrian's superhero team and being a double agent Adrian and Nova are both keeping additional alter-egos a secret while maintaining both their superhero identities and regular personas within their team.

Adrian and Nova's secret alter-egos are actually enemies or at least out to get each other , but neither one of them knows that. And they are adorable together. Actually, all of the characters are adorable! Oscar and Ruby were my favorites for sure. Marissa Meyer is just so good at showing the group dynamics of a bunch of teens so all of their unique personalities come through. Some of the fun banter totally reminded me of what I loved about The Lunar Chronicles. And the diversity was awesome here, too. Basically, this book is just plain fun. It's a creative world full of so many different superheroes with every kind of power it kind of reminded me of The Incredibles at times.

But then plot got more philosophical at the same time and reflected a lot of relevant questions for our world. For example, prodigies used to be persecuted, but then the Anarchists took down the system of oppression that only served a small group. Adrian remembers the gangs that rose to power in the absence of government in the Age of Anarchy and thinks the Renegade's current Council is better, but Nova's definitely there to take them down: Nova believes that the "system that was meant to protect and serve was nothing more than a failed social experiment" because the Renegades weren't there to stop her family from being murdered when she was six.

She thinks the people would be better off on their own than in a society run by "dictators who had put themselves in this position of power without cause, and now had no idea what to do with it. There are groups with different views and goals even on the same side, which made the story more realistic.

I loved this story BUT definitely think it could've been about half the length. It took me a bit to get a feel for the whole world and what was even going on. I had issues with the pacing for sure It could've been a lot more concise and powerful if the next book was part of this one. But I liked the concept and characters enough that my enthusiasm remains! Thank you to the publisher for sending me a finished copy. View all 21 comments. I feel like the amount of expectations I put on this book just made it bound to disappoint me. Like, think about it realistically, how is ANY book ever going to live up to the glory that is Scarlet??

My feelings and thoughts summed up: The Pros - I love me some anti-heroes, give me bad guys with tragic back stories and complex development that make me rethink my entire moral compass - The ending was bloody fantastic, that last sentence left me all!!???!! The writing is strong, but then again what is new? Marissa Meyer can start writing adult horror books with freaky dead dolls creeping into your brain and the writing would be incredible nonetheless. I hope she doesn't, though. I even enjoyed the story. If I'm not forgetting any past reads, this is my first superhero book read — or one of the firsts — so I was certainly very interested from the beginning, and my interest remained long enough for me to finish these pages in a considerably short time. What I love about vendetta stories is how fierce and determined the revengeful ones are and how important justice — though not exactly the right kind — is to them, which we have here.

However, I have to admit that vendetta stories can get repetitive, so not everything in here is original. But as I mentioned, I was still very interested, because Marissa Meyer knows how to make the reader want more, with small twists and turns hidden at various places inside the storyline, and by making us curious about the future of the characters, whether we're fully invested in them or just a little.

And it's true the characters grow on you, even if in the beginning you're not so sure. I would suggest Ms. Meyer practiced writing fighting action scenes more, though, since they do feel rehearsed. I had trouble taking some of them seriously. May 12, Sana marked it as to-read. View all 32 comments. But why do you need powers to actually make a difference? There is so much diversity and so much creativity in this. And nothing feels forced. Nothing was instant and nothing was dramatic. It was just adorable. Nova is our main girl and she is an Anarchist, which is considered a bad group of guys to the public. She sees the Renegades as the bad guys though, and is determined to take them down for the controlling-superheroes they are.

When she finally gets to see what really goes on at their headquarters though, she starts to view things a litter differently. So I made a list as I read I listened to the majority of the book so I could start first thing in the morning as I got ready for work and then when I got the physical copy, saw they had a list of the main characters too. Nothing is really a spoiler, but you might enjoy finding out about the characters yourself! Her parents and baby sister were killed when she was little… and she has a giant grudge on the Renegades.

Winston Pratt Puppeteer He likes to put children under his spell. He can control people to do his bidding. Ingrid Thompson Detonador Has a thing for bombs. Honey Harper Queen Bee She has a thing for bees and wasps. I think she can control them if she wanted to. Marissa Meyer is one of my favorite authors, like I need to buy everything she writes. So, I bought this book because: Marissa Meyer is one of my favorite authors.

I needed this pretty book on my bookshelf. The plot was interesting. Look, when my copy arrived at my house, I was beyond excited, you know. Here are the reasons why I enjoyed reading this book: The Plot and The Pacing I'm not really a fan of superheroes but this book worked for me! The plot intrigued me and it kept me that way till the end of the book, which was so great, right!? I love reading slow-paced books but even though it's slow-paced, the book has to keep me interested and this book did that to me.

The pacing was slow but it somehow always made me curious about The Characters first of all, I wanted to talk about Adrian, first. This guy could make me smile the way I rarely smile at boys in real life! Look, I don't really need a boyfriend but I would totally be so happy if I had a boyfriend like Adrian.

He is so sweet and he could make me laugh! So this means something, right? The secondary characters in this book were also great. Especially, Oscar and Ruby. I wish I had a friend like him! The Romance It's about the romance. It's not bad and it was even good but I needed more of the romance hahaha, it wasn't enough and I totally know that the main plot here isn't the romance but I still needed more scenes between these two particular characters.

In conclusion, I enjoyed reading this book and had a good time reading it. I recommend you guys to read it: D Thank you very much for reading and liking this review. I appreciate it very much. I tried the quiz, guys! And my super power is super strength. It's so cool and I hope this book won't let me down. View all 19 comments. We Were Liars is a thriller that takes place in pages and manages to fit in an introduction, a complex conflict, an intriguing storyline, a plot twist, AND a satisfying conclusion. I had so many emotions during those pages. Yes, makes for a plot twist, but no, not a good one.

Like first of all, I have the Renegades to remember. Then the Anarchists, then the Council members. I literally do not care for her at all. I do appreciate that she is half-Filipino, half-Italian tho!! I love seeing all this biracial representation in YA books, because I feel like their stories are important as well.

He had the potential to be a great character, but unfortunately, he joined all the other YA sacks of flour as a bland character. Also, are we serious?? Not a spoiler btw.

There is literally NO chemistry between the two characters. It is not only amazing to see GAY!! I also loved 2 Ruby and Oscar because it was cute, okay. Dec 31, Ashley Nuckles rated it it was amazing. Vojsk rated it it was amazing. Would you be a superhero or a villain? If I had to choose, I would take the side which would be the right one in my opinion. Nova was raised by people that many call villains - people that fought the Renegades in the Age of Anarchy.

But after a failed assassination on the head of the Renegades, Nova is forced to take another way to get what she wants. And that makes her rethink everything she thought and all her plans. From the first moment I was absolutely fascinated and in love with this book. I always had a weakness for villains, for bad boys, for people who were seen as evil.

And Nova aka Nightmare is one of them. She attempted to kill one of the Council members of the Renegades- and she failed. She was ruthless, extremely intelligent and such an interesting character. Adrian - my wonderful cinnamon roll - oh, I mean, superhero. He was such a sweetie. He was smart, strong and he knew when Nova could save her own ass. He was also such a lovely and caring son, big brother and team leader.

All in all I was absolutely in love with him. Even though I loved all the characters in this book, I still think they need a little bit more depth. Ace Anarchy changed everything. He united the most powerful prodigies he could find and together they rebelled. The Anarchists cared little for what would come next once the old world crumbled. They cared only for change, and they got it. They call it the Age of Anarchy. But then, seemingly overnight Bright and sparkling hope, dressed up in capes and masks.

Hope called themselves the Renegades.

I thought this Pre-Prologue was absolutely perfect. Every time we get to know a little bit more about what happened and what is happening now, I get to excited. The hero and the villain?

Are You an Author?

And the tension and the cuteness between those two was just so beautiful. The loyalty she felt towards her uncle, who saved her and the love she felt towards the other villains was so refreshing. She only cared how they treated her, how they raised her. And it was so gorgeous and beautiful. I loved how Nova saw the world and the people in it. So long as there are heroes in this world, there's hope that tomorrow night might be better. It was so perfectly paced and balanced, there was action, romantic tension and funny things too. Hero or villain, all prodigies were powerful. Renegades is actually the first book I've read about superheroes and villains. Novels about such characters e. With that in mind, I probably wouldn't have requested this book from the publisher if it wasn't penned by one of my favorite auth Hero or villain, all prodigies were powerful. With that in mind, I probably wouldn't have requested this book from the publisher if it wasn't penned by one of my favorite authors. Marissa Meyer never fails to make me happy, so it should go without question that I'll read anything written by her. In her brand new novel, Marissa Meyer deconstructs the notions we have about heroes and villains.

Logic dictates that heroes are "good" and villains are "evil". However, after reading Renegades , you'll most likely find yourself questioning the validity of such reasoning. There are two organizations in this book: In spite of their many differences, they have one thing in common: Nova Artino, the female lead, is an Anarchist who justifiably yearns for the destruction of the Renegades.

Adrian Everheart, the male lead, is a Renegade who only wants to solve the mystery of his mother's demise. When the paths of these two teenagers converge, you'll have a difficult time choosing your side. While reading Renegades , I found myself partial to the Anarchists, who were supposedly or strictly malevolent. Most of the book was told from Nova's POV, and her musings about the Renegades were surprisingly accurate and thought-provoking. For instance, her main complaint against the Renegades was that they were making ordinary people so lazy or passive. Since the Renegades were there to solve everyone's problems they were just a call away , people became unwilling to help others and even themselves.

Nova couldn't help but see this psychological phenomenon diffusion of responsibility as a disadvantage, and I totally agreed with her. In fact, one of my favorite sayings is "God helps those who help themselves. Maybe Nova's childhood would have been happier if the people around her weren't so passive. I also sided with the Anarchists because there were Renegades who didn't deserve to be called "heroes," in the truest sense of the word.

Some Renegades abused their privileges and saw themselves as superior to Nova and the other Anarchists. Of course, as their name implies, the Anarchists weren't totally innocent. Still, they didn't deserve to be treated inhumanely. Also, if I were to focus on Nova alone, I would say that she was the one who deserved to be called a Renegade.

She belonged to a villainous group, but many of her actions reflected heroism. It was no surprise that Adrian made me think twice about my loyalty. He wasn't one of those narcissistic Renegades. As much as he wanted to attain justice, he wasn't willing to compromise his integrity. Furthermore, even though he was the son of the founders of the Renegades, Adrian wasn't smug or complacent. He treated his peers with warmth and respect, and he even managed to be compassionate to his enemies.

The best thing I liked about him was his willingness to listen to other people's opinions or suggestions. Despite his elevated rank as a Renegade, he didn't believe that the Renegades and their policies were perfect. In retrospect, his only flaw was his gullibility. And let me tell you, Nova acknowledged this fact.

Putting Nova and Adrian side by side, it was utterly difficult for me to stay loyal. I deeply sympathized with Nova, but I didn't want her to succeed at the expense of Adrian's happiness. With that in mind, I really loved this book because it gave me moments of deep, philosophical introspection. Marissa Meyer wrote Renegades in such a way that categorizing characters into heroes and villains wasn't as easy as pie. I had so much fun practicing my critical thinking skills.

Honestly, I couldn't find major flaws to discuss in this review, but for objectivity's sake, I felt a bit jaded about one of the plot twists because it was reminiscent of Pierce Brown's Red Rising. In conclusion, Renegades is one of the most thought-provoking books YA has to offer. Anyway, you're probably a silly person if you expect me to give a Marissa Meyer book less than 5 stars.

Even though it didn't exactly reach the bar set by The Lunar Chronicles, I can say that I genuinely loved this book. Other noteworthy virtues of Renegades include: An almost romance-free plot 3. A mind-blowing ending that more than compensated for the mentioned "flaw". View all 23 comments. Jun 06, April rated it it was amazing.

It's a pretty big book, with lots and lots of amazingness between them. Now we have the anarchists vs. Then there's Nova, who I loved so freaking much it's actually insane.

I'd be fucking pissed - like NOVA. Then there's the whole Nova and Adrian and I'm like..

Me ha encantando esta historia. Nova, nuestra protagonista, me ha parecido un personaje brutal. Para acabar con sus enemigos, los anarquistas creen que Nova debe infiltrarse entre las filas de los Renegados para acabar con ellos desde dentro. It seems that some kinky people are born while others are made. I've been kinky since I was a very young man. I was too young for it to be a sexual thrill, but it was thrilling nonetheless, and that carried forward into my adult life.

I began writing five years ago because there were stories inside me that just had to come out. I think of myself as the stenographer for my twisted unconscious mind. I don't set out to write a particular story, it simply flows out of me. The words are raw and a little confused at first, and they need some polish before they are ready for you. I hope you enjoy my work, and if you do, tell your friends. Are you an author? Help us improve our Author Pages by updating your bibliography and submitting a new or current image and biography.
