Inaugurated in Western Australia in , the Fairbridge system was widely admired when it was implemented in British Columbia. Certainly it was better than earlier schemes where disadvantaged children from Britain were consigned to farm families in remote places in central and eastern Canada. The plight of British home children is now well-known. But the Fairbridge system was also flawed and, the author asserts, Fairbridgians should be included in the larger diaspora of British home children.

They were invited to London in February to hear the apology. The experience was transformative. For a long time, Marjorie was embittered that her mother had apparently colluded with the child welfare authorities in the break-up of their family. Marjorie felt like a cast off and so never spoke of her background after she married and had children of her own.

They travelled to England where Marjorie reunited with siblings she had not seen in seventy years. Most of the book deals with the rediscovered childhood of Marjorie and her family in England and the powerful emotional experience of witnessing the official apology for child migration in the British House of Commons.

But the book also deals with historical events in British Columbia. Everything Happens for a Reason: And Other Lies I've Loved. After drying their tears, they may think about other questionable social engineering experiments like the residential schools for native people and about the big holes in our present-day social safety net. Let's hope that Skidmore's excellent book completes the restoration of Marjorie Arnison's spirit.

This book tells the very personal story of Marjorie Skidmore as a "child migrant", who was taken from her family in England, and sent to Canada to work as cheap labor at the Prince of Wales Fairbridge Farm School because her mother struggled to support her children. The British Child Migration Movement went on for over years and affected thousands of children, yet it is a topic I knew nothing about.

Marjorie's daughter, Pat, does an outstanding job of telling her mother's story, which affected not only Marjorie's life, but the life of her children who had a very difficult time growing up with no sense of family and a mother who was emotionally distant. This is also a wonderful story of healing and love between a mother and daughter. I could'nt put it down.. Interesting look into life's forgotten children. Patricia did a great job validating her mother's sad childhood. Answered Questions for a project I am doing.

Such a beautifully written account of a mother's unbelievable journey through life and from such a young age. One person found this helpful. Right from the start, Patricia Skidmore had set the stage for this riveting account of the deception of children and their parents in a horrific scheme that promised them "a better life". Joyce would probably get to go back home. As quickly as they surfaced, she forced her memories out of her mind.
