Choosing Disloyalty: Ludwig Beck and Claus von Stauffenberg

Because that is somewhat of an interesting question, I thought that it could, in itself, become the topic of at least one blog post. Also, to be clear, I have not read any of these three books yet.

Guido Knopp, Die Sternstunden der Deutschen. A Warning from History. When I saw that this book is tops in the German history category at Amazon.

I lived here in neighboring Austria — with lots of German television — during that World Cup and I can say without a doubt that it was a very positive experience in which the Germans took great pride. Anne Frank, Anne Frank Tagebuch. I think you all know about this book! Have you read it lately?

In their description of the book, the Amazon. Unfortunately, it appears to be available only in German. The first celebrates German accomplishments, of which we know there are many.

The second represents tragedy and remembrance. The third, I imagine, shines a light on both the awful and the promising notes of 20th Century German history.

Unless I thought Amazon had merely miscategorized it. According to Wikipedia , her nationality was German until when she was stripped off it.

The scope is broad, the characters are plentiful, yet Singer is able to narrow his focus — and ours — to the people who matter. Hitler has a contingency plan — codenamed Valkyrie — that permits his Reserve Army to take control of Berlin should there be an enemy uprising. He plans to kill Hitler, assert the idea that the SS are staging a coup, and initiate Valkyrie.

This will allow the Reserve Army to overthrow the SS, thus permitting von Stauffenberg and gang to assume control of the nation.

This can only work if Hitler is dead. There is a telephone call and Goebbels passes the phone to Remer. Immediately, Remer clicks his heels and swallows. Goebbels is no longer under arrest. And Remer has been duped by rebels.

What follows is history. The suspense is effective, though it made me wonder just how much of it is real and how much is conjured by Hollywood drama.

It works, mainly because it supports the story instead of driving it. Its driving force comes from its actors, not from the actors themselves, but from the people they portray.
