Charley falls right to sleep, with Henry lying next to him. But Charley's howls fill the house when he wakes all alone in the middle of the night, and Henry knows it's his job to calm him. He does his best, a couple of times, but Charley keeps waking up and howling. How can Henry get this dog to sleep peacefully through the night? Amy Hest and Helen Oxenbury are a marvelous match. Hest has the ability to write sentimental but not maudlin stories and Oxenbury's illustrations have a sweet, old-fashioned feel that fits perfectly.

At home his parents lay down the rules as to who will be walking and feeding Charley. Henry has no problem being in charge of Charley's care.
His parents also make it clear that Charley will be sleeping in the kitchen, not in his bedroom. Henry reluctantly leaves Charley in the kitchen with his favorite stuffed toy and a blanket. But Charley wakes up several times durin Henry finds Charley in the snow. But Charley wakes up several times during the night and Henry goes to comfort him.
Eventually they end up in Henry's bed and both fall asleep before Henry makes sure to get Charley back to his bed in the kitchen. Very cute and gently story illustrated with Oxenbury's award-winning illustrations. Not a great one for storytime as it is very intimate and a bit long. Fabulous for one-on-one reading. I thought you were right on. It's very quaint, familiar, and comfy. I like this style, and the subtle palette for this book made it even more palatable. There are accidents oops and Henry's parents' rules about caring for their new puppy.

The text was simple yet repetitive in a way that children would enjoy hearing and reading. The illustrations were charming. And the story being told was really nice: As a fairly new puppy parent myself, I could easily put myself in this human child's place.
